The MMA thread

Mcgregor was the one who took a swipe at Nate in the face off. Don't know if he's just trying to make the show even bigger or he was genuinely annoyed about Nate mocking the people he trains with. May be the first time Mcgregor is the one who's been riled up by an opponent's words?

Can't see why anything Diaz said would piss McGregor off more than stuff that's been said about him by other fighters. I suspect it's mostly just them building the fight. This sort of aggro and smack talk is basically what people were expecting from McGregor v Diaz, so there it is. All a bit panto.

McGregor caught him off guard there. I think Nate was pissed that he didn't get a shot in himself. Also, its hard to tell whether McGregor is riled up or not considering he is always a complete nutjob who picks fights over any little thing.

I thought the Diaz brothers are getting into Conor's head a bit - the Steroid comments, the lack of respect Nate has for Conor's profile, and Nate's general demeanor leading up to the faceoff.

Well as long as he doesn't get too emotional and wound up...might dive bomb onto Diaz' fist like Aldo did with mcgregor (hope not though)

WWE style nonsense there. Everybody is now more interested in the fight than they were a week ago.
He only slapped Nates hand away from his face yet its being reported as a brawl in some quarters. Gotta jack that buyrate I suppose.

Enjoyed that press conference, was a good watch. The face off is hilarious, Conor winding Nate up.

I've seen this mentioned a few times about. How was Conor the one winding him up? If anything it's the other way round. There was various points Conor got visibly annoyed in the press conference (at one point he stopped speaking completely and looked fuming as the camera went on him) and then he took a swipe in the face off. Diaz didn't seem bothered at all really.

Diaz had the best lines in the conference as well I thought. The stuff about Ido Portal was funny especially.

Nate Diaz is one of the thickest people I've had the displeasure of watching.

 Conor's talking doesn't work with Nate at all. He seemed happy to get it over with for once

Nate Diaz is one of the thickest people I've had the displeasure of watching.

He speaks like he's stupid I agree but in other interviews when he's not in press conferences some of the stuff he says is quite well thought out I think. His stuff on Embedded for example or when he's interviewed one on one he's ok.

in fairness the Diaz brothers had little education growing up. Both dropped out of school i think at 13 or 14 They come from a very poor background

The fact that both are not in jail and have had successful careers in the sport is quite the achievement

It seems as if Conor punched Nate's hand? Isn't that an offence they have to fine him for? I think you can even see Nate holding his wrist/hand later on in the video, that's a very cheap shot by Conor there... just as I was starting to like him.

I feel this fight has upset Conor a bit. He hasn't really been as into promoting it as he has been in other fights. Probably deep down very disappointed that he went from Dos Anjos to Diaz, which is understandable.

It doesn't help that Diaz is too thick to understand any sort of insult thrown his way.

I liked the Ido Portal digs too. Especially because I think the guy is a jumped up arsehole.

Hope it's nothing

Don't see why McGregor had to do that though. No need to hit his hand away. Most of the stare downs from Diaz look like that. He must have known that..

He is a nut job that's why. He is the type of guy that would go from smiling and laughing to trying to shiv you because you sneezed too close to him. It also rattled Diaz a little bit there, don't think he expected that either.

Why are people saying Diaz is not being affected by the trash talk? To me he looks even more emotional than Aldo was.

I've actually never seen McGregor this wound up. Nate has gotten into his head.
Is that a good thing though? He got wound up against Aldo in their weigh-in too mind. Its like poking a honey badger, the feckers going to get nasty with you.

I think both men are looking affected by the talk. Its making the trash talk a lot more interesting.

Well yeah lol he is known for his unpredictability. However I do remember Diaz saying that is McGregor got in his face he would "pop him one"

Maybe McGregor just got there first...Diaz looks quite defeated that that happened to him. And McGregor is ridiculously wound up...interesting fight to come.

In my opinion, it's obvious why Conor punched Nate's hand, and no, it's not to try injure it as some people are saying.

1. To get more last minute hype for the fight, and this clearly has worked. A lot of people in my workplace are talking about it now and one guy just subscribed to BT Sport to watch it

2. Conor has clearly realized that his words will not affect Diaz, either because Diaz is too thick skinned or just thick but getting physical has I think affected Diaz, which I reckon was McGregor's ultimate objective.

The UFC and Dana however, will do jack shit about it because Conor is bigger than them.

Aldo didn't wind him up, in fact his pose during the weigh in was more a sign of weakness and a departure from his normal vaguely unemotional self. Diaz is a completely different beast in that his trash talk game is comparable to McGregor and its quite clear Conor is getting wound up by the things he is saying, especially the Steroids talk, Rich kids shouldn't fight, and the worst of all "Conor doesn't believe the shit that comes out of his own mouth". If you go through the presser and this latest TV interview, the expression McGregor's face is clearly different than the WWE entertainment he offered up in the lead up to Aldo or RdS.

I was thinking that myself watching the press conference, but then you read on here others had a completely different take on it.

I guess your perception of these things is changed depending on who you want to win.

You can only wind someone up if they understand what you're saying. Conor's extravagant one liners that were obviously pre-scripted for him by either himself or a comedy writer he hired, were completely lost on Diaz. The Diaz Brothers basically invented that game, so it's not likely to phase them.

I think people get to caught up on the whole winding people up thing. I'm sure it works for some people and it does hinder their performance but as a whole I don't think it does that much really. Whilst both have seemed wound up in different points (Diaz admits McGregor offended him with the taking piss of helping kids) I really can't see either being the type who let something such as trash talk get to them in a negative way. It's purely to market fights for me and is very WWE how it's done these days.

He seemed pretty wound up.

Nates trash talk has been awful to be fair. All he has done is just throw out a bunch of left field insults that have made very little sense all things considered. They've blind sided Conor with it, which has wound him up. He didn't expect any of them because they are so random and idiotic.

Honestly, normal human beings would just laugh off somebody accusing them of steroids. Especially when their own brother was banned for taking drugs. But Mcgregor is a nutjob who takes offence at anything.

I don't think anyone thinks Aldo wound McGregor up, as its not the Brazilian way. He was calm for most of the time Conor was comedy berating him during the 6 plus months of lead up. What we have now in Diaz, is someone who along with his brother, is notorious for trash talk inside and outside the octagon, which Conor has not dealt with at all in his career, as well as someone who gets into scraps (Khabib), outside the fighting game. Conor may win on Saturday but it won't be without a bit more drama.

Huh? Difference between weed and steroids really mate. Diaz's team have tested positive for steroids but Nick hasn't. I don't think it's that much of a nutjob thing to take offence to being accused of being on steroids as well. He's an athlete who has worked all his life to get where he is. If he isn't taking steroids and someone is saying he's cheating then it probably is hugely offensive really.

I don't think Nate's trash talk has been awful to be fair. Most of Conor's best lines are quite clearly rehearsed (the balloon animals one.) He's stumped McGregor a few times, most notably when McGregor said he doesn't give a feck about the belt and Diaz asked why he always has it with him then. Trash talk as a whole can vary, both Diaz brothers do spout plenty of nonesense but it's pretty funny to listen to.

I dunno. I see both fighters mentalities to the fight is completely different. Conor seems 100% confident in his victory, Diaz does not. That's going on what they are saying.

Diaz has constantly avoided saying he will win and isn't too sure how it will go, Conor predicts a knockout and reckons his fat, soft centre will be Nates undoing, as well as his sloppy footwork. Conviction is the main thing needed in a fight, not being wound up or upset.

You're basing that on Diaz not making predictions like we're accustomed to seeing Conor doing each fight. The Diaz Bros generally don't roll like that. He instead makes comments like "kill or be killed" etc. What he is very good at is getting into people's heads much like Conor does, although not through pre-scripted one liners, but through simply not showing his opponents any respect. I think this is getting into McGregor's head, as he thinks Diaz should give him more respect than he's been getting, simply because he gave him the fight and the chance at making a $1m. Nate doesn't play that game, so it will be interesting to see what happens.

It really is for normal people. I wouldn't get wound up if some illiterate thicko started mumbling that I was on steroids. I doubt most people would either. McGregor does because he himself is a nut job who takes offence over everything.

The most insulting thing would be the digs at his training camp. But even then, McGregor could point out that his camp won him a title and Diaz's won shit in his career. Same with the fighting midgets'. Aldo was the most dominant champion at the time of his defeat and better then most opponents Diaz fought. Still, that's just me thinking like a rational human being. I'm not Irish though am I (No offence to any Irish people on here, it was just a joke, please don't hurt me).

Based on the fact that when asked whether he thinks he will win, he ducks the question. He doesn't know how the fight will go, je just thinks it will be a good fight. McGregor knows how the fight will go in his head and 100% trusts that that is how it will go in reality. Its called pre visualisation and is why Mcgregor has won as much as he has. Nothing to do with trash talk, just his ability to see how a fight is going and how to nock people out and then execute that with 100% conviction. His best ability is his eye for the sport. He has a very good eye when it comes to spotting flaws in fighters and ways to win. Its actually really impressive when you consider it.

That's the beauty of Nate's comeback that McGregor doesn't actually believe what he is saying. That's one way to get into your opponent's head by winding them up by disrupting their sense of self belief.

I think people have decided he's too gangster/ninja/badass to be affected as soon as the fight has been announced. The actual reality is that he is being affected, big time.

I don't even like Conor, but he's clearly winning the pre-fight battle. If this will actually count for anything in the actual fight with Nate, we'll see tomorrow.

Cant see it working myself. McGregor has ridiculous self belief here and didn't seem like it affected his self belief either. I also think Nate Diaz has been equally rattled by what Mcgregor did in the staredown. This isn't the one way "Nates all in Mcgregors head" picture that you are painting. Both have gotten to each other here, just in different ways. McGregor has reacted with anger and Diaz has reacted by being shaken by it.

I don't think Diaz expected Conor to hit his hand like that. He thought that if he poked Conor very little will happen physically. That Conor was just a trash talker. He isn't, the guy is a complete nut case who really will go to any lengths all things considered. You get a lot of those guys in the UK lower classes. People who are as sketchy as feck and will turn on the drop of a hat.

Depends what you mean "normal person" I'd probably suggest being an elite athlete and arguably the Number 1 in your sport makes you not a normal person. Equally in a sporting field marred with allegations and controversy about steroid use then it winds them up. Go in to a gym and tell every day body builders they're on steroids and I'd imagine some of them would get pissed off. What you think normal isn't necessarily normal as well, it just is for you. Equally he didn't get THAT annoyed by it really did he? He raised his voice and said he's not on steroids then laughed and joked a couple of minutes later. I don't think he takes offence over everything really, in fact up until yesterday he's always seemed quite laidback. Watch any of the Embedded series he is in or interviews and when people insults him he tends to laugh it off. He may come back with something to say but that doesn't mean he's offended more he's just entitled to a response.

I'm not Irish either and have criticised McGregor in the past.but I just don't see the complaints about him as valid. It's a valid criticism to say he shouldn't be punching his opponents hands 2 days before a fight yeah. I doubt he's that bothered about the midget comments (he used to call Chad Mendes "Midget Mendes" for example) and the fact is Aldo and all the others are smaller than fighter Diaz has fought.

It's just trash talk and back and forth to sell a fight, McGregor and Diaz aren't the first and hopefully won't be the last, it is entertaining to watch after all.
