Correct me if i'm wrong but if it's a catchweight fight then they couldn't fight for the title right?

You are correct of course. Title fights have to be bang on the weight limit. You aren't even allowed the 1 pound allowance you have in regular fights.

Who makes those rules though ? Can't the UFC change it if they want to ?

I believe it's part of the unified rules that the commissions adhere to. To be honest I'm not really sure what they could do if the UFC just decided to do their own thing, being as powerful as they are. I highly doubt they'd ever go that far though, even for Conor. It would rip up every shred of legitimacy the belts hold if you started having fights outside of the weight classes decide them. Which in turn would affect the legitimacy of the sport somewhat. A bit WWE'ish.

A lot of buzz in the last couple of hours that Nate has got the fight. Seemed the likeliest outcome if Conor is set on staying on the card.

They can't do their own thing, as the sporting bodies sanction the fights within each state

Ufc have to abide by rules

That's true but last weekend there was a commission that sanctioned Kimbo vs Dada 5000. These sporting bodies can be very shady. With that said Nevada would definitely be a tough (expensive) one to get something like that past. If they wanted to do it for some reason it would have to be in some backwater... or Texas.

Diaz would make the most sense. Pretty sure that was the fight the McGregor camp initially suggested when Aldo pulled out too.

Would be a lot of fun.

Cheers thought so but wasn't 100% sure how it works in MMA.

Was well looking forward to this , I think Cerrone would be a good choice too.

Diaz cant box for shit these days.
Conor setting up a win at 170 for a shot at Lawler at UFC 200 imo

This is the best fight to make, possibly even if RDA wasn't injured, since you could argue Conor didn't deserve an immediate title shot in a new division.

This is a disaster really for Mcgrego. If he had of beaten RDA, obviously he would have become the first two weight champion. Then they would have given him Lawlor at UFC 200 to possibly become a 3 weight world champion.

But now that he has gone up to 170, there's absolutely no way he could possibly drop back down to 145 to defend the featherweight belt. The chances were slim as it was. He was obviously hedging his bets on fighting for the two heavier belts before he would have had to defend the featherweight and then obviously give it up. They can't hold off the fw belt until RDA gets fit.

Personally I would have bet on RDA. I think McGregor will pick off Lawlor with ease though. And Diaz hasn't got much of a hope.

Disappointing anyway. Imagine a 2 weight world champion fighting for a third belt at UFC 200... It couldn't be any bigger.

Helwani: "Some backstory to a wild 24 hours: Nate Diaz was always the top choice here but getting below 165 on such short notice was one issue. They came back with 160 pounds but that was going to be an issue too so Diaz stood firm at 165 pounds. In the end, the weight or opponent never mattered to McGregor. That's the truth. So it was set. A couple hours go by. Plans now being made to get them together in LA tomorrow, which will happen. McGregor is on the phone with UFC execs. McGregor adds one more note:
"Make it 170," he says. "Tell him to get comfortable." The fight is made. At welterweight."

He ducks nobody, it will eventually be his downfall but its hard not to respect the shit out of McGregor

What does he say? Get rich and get out? If he wins another belt I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest to see him retire... definitely before he is 30 anyway.

To be honest, I kinda doubt that. To me he comes across as a dude who just loves to fight. I could see him retire once he has reached his peak and is back on the slope down, but I expect him to keep fighting as long as he can and there are interesting fights to be had.

There is no way Mcgregor doesn't retire without being universally views as one of the greatest fighters of all time. He views himself in the same bracket as Ali and wants to be recognised in the same way once he is finished.

He could, it really depends on how well he does over the next year or so, if he wins all these mental fights he's setting up, for sure could be.

But like with Ronda, all it takes is one knock out and the hype train is dead.

That was the dream, it's all fecked now though :(..

Honestly think he'd win those 2 other belts too. Imagine what that would do for the UFC

He won me a nice bit of cash too. Wonder what odds there will be on Diaz by submission?

6/1 on Paddy Power this morning.

I think McGregor has a lot more charm than Ronda though. I know he can rub people up the wrong way but it seemsm ore playful when he does it. Rousey just came across as a cnut to me.

Equally the hype train won't really derail. If he lost this he could argue it's 2 weights above where he holds a title. He's still a champion and there's plenty of places for him to go. If/when he loses I doubt he'll be on the same money he's probably on now but it's easy enough to talk someone up after a loss again. It's not a Mayweather situation where people pay to see them lose for example.

With all these bruised ribs, sore toes and dislocated egos, it's really horrible news for the featherweight division and especially Frankie Edgar. If McGregor beats Nate then he will inevitably take on RDA followed by Lawler (or vice versa) to try get three belts at once, but whilst he is on this crusade, what happens to the featherweight division? Do they all just sit back and wait for the messiah to return? What does Frankie do? Take ANOTHER title eliminator fight although he is already the rightful challenger for the throne? Does this cement the notion that King Conor should never have been allowed to hold multiple belts and the featherweight division is being punished for the UFC pandering to Conor's every whim? I really wish someone has "the answer" to this conundrum...

Great matchup. More excited for this than I was with the Dos Anjos fight tbh

He claims he can defend them all at the same and he wants to fight 4 times a year, which is pretty busy. Aldo rematch has to be done before Frankie anyway, one would guess RDA at 200, then Aldo in another 3 months, then Lawler maybe.

We've seen champions do less than 1 title defense a year pretty much, so that could even itself out for a Edgar match in 2017 :D

As much as he doesn't want to vacate a title, he might have to after that, that weight cut was brutal before and now he'll weigh a lot more.

Nice poster from this guy (https://twitter.com/Bosslogic?ref_src=twsrc^google|twcamp^serp|twgr^author) on Twitter

Maybe he'll vacate featherweight once he wins another title? He might want all three but cutting from welterweight to featherweight to face a pissed off Jose Aldo doesn't sound like a great idea.

Jose Aldo January 2016 -
"Hi everyone, I was quiet for a while, because I was waiting for my rematch. In fact, I was already training for it, based on how the fight went down. But apparently I was wrong. So I wanted to make something clear to the UFC: for everything that I've done, everything I've accepted, and mostly how the fight ended, I will not accept any other fight other than a title shot. My only exception would be fighting Conor McGregor. At any time, anywhere, it doesn't even have to be title fight against him."

Jose Aldo Feb 2016 -
"Nah, not now thanks".

I sort of doubt now that Aldo will ever fight McGregor again. Seen an interview with Dana that confirms this, says they offered Aldo the fight first and he said no. So he isn't that keen.

With McGregor looking to move up for the light and welterweight belts can't see him having too many more fights at featherweight.
