The MMA thread

I'm sure all fighters would gladly take it. They would make a cool 500k for a few minutes of fighting.

Yep. It would certainly have been worth their while making sure they were ready just in case this happened.

Nate Diaz: "He's gonna have to get on his knees and beg..."

Also Aldo's coach has apparently said he's not in shape to fight so he's out.

FFS just heard the news. Pretty gutted as I really wanted to see this fight and the timing was perfect, both guys on a tear. Not really any point in Conor taking another fight from his standpoint, although he probably won't want to let travelling fans down. What do you do though, take a random non-title fight at lightweight? Seems a bit weird.

Khabib also offered to step in and the UFC outright said no apparently. No real surprise there. Conor would have the least to gain and the highest chance of losing compared to the other names mentioned.

Seems that's exactly what he'll do. I suppose every fight he's in earns him big money regardless of the opponent, so...

Might not be a bad thing for him to get a fight in at lightweight before the title shot anyway.

It's a great opportunity for most. If they lose, it's because they took the fight on short notice.

I'd fight Conor for half a million dollars.

Hmm maybe. You could definitely argue it didn't end up being a good move for Chad Mendes in the long run, couldn't you?

As much as I want to see Conor fight some alternative fighter at UFC 196, I think its best he reschedule his RdS fight for later UFC.

Which would be the toughest/easiest fight for McGregor from Cerrone, Diaz and Pettis?

There's no easy fight there but it's all the same to him.

Cowboy is currently at welterweight but lost poorly in his last lightweight bout.

Diaz' last fight was one of his more impressive wins.

Showtime is on a two fight losing streak.

I was thinking more that Holloway might be happy to go up one weight class to get a huge payday and avenge his last defeat.
I'm sure he'd take the fight but McGregor would finish the fight this time and it wouldn't be as much a draw as Cowboy or Diaz.

In fairness he's had one fight since and whenever he gets brought up with McGregor people do always mention he only had 2 weeks camp. I don't think it's done that badly for his career really, he's still ranked 3rd in the featherweight rankings for UFC.

True but given McGregor is fighting at two weights now he's quite a bit away from a title shot. Less of a priority than Aldo, Edgar, RDA, whoever McGregor is fighting now and maybe a few other fights that will pop up while McGregor works through that list.

Jose Aldo January 2016 -
"Hi everyone, I was quiet for a while, because I was waiting for my rematch. In fact, I was already training for it, based on how the fight went down. But apparently I was wrong. So I wanted to make something clear to the UFC: for everything that I've done, everything I've accepted, and mostly how the fight ended, I will not accept any other fight other than a title shot. My only exception would be fighting Conor McGregor. At any time, anywhere, it doesn't even have to be title fight against him."

"Nah, not now thanks".

Cerrone just fought two days ago.

Aldo makes the most sense - catchweight so both can make weight on short notice, or at lightweight.

I would be seriously shocked if Aldo would take the fight on short notice

As expected, Aldo has declined the chance

Ill timing, seeing as he gave an interview two weeks ago saying he would fight McGregor "anytime, anywhere"

Talk about feeding Conor with more ammo when they eventually do rematch

There are videos & tweets of Cerrone already starting to do cardio to lose weight.

I think it's a great fight, the only downer is Cerrone being destroyed by RDA.

Aldo fight wouldn't really make any sense. If they do a rematch at 155 with no belt on the line then if Aldo wins they'd presumably have to do the thing again at 145 for the title, meaning they'd be fighting 3 times in a row. I think Aldo is holding out for a title rematch.

Cowboy has to drop. Like 30lbs in two weeks to make weight. He is never going to be in condition to fight even if he makes weight.
If im Conor im refusing all catchweight proposals. This is 4 out of 8 opponents that have bailed on him. Its ridiculous and hes being taken advantage of quite frankly. Every step forward is twice as long for him.

Tbf he was brutally knocked out two months ago. He should be nowhere near the octagon. Look at Mendes v Frankie after Conor destroyed his chin. The odds for a repeat knockout is so high due to his brain not having fully recovered.

I'm starting to wonder why UFC doesn't have backup fighters preselected and ready to step in for the big bouts at this point. There is always an injury or an issue, maybe it's time to start anticipating that.

Very disappointing that Aldo wasn't prepared for the opportunity and a great fight.

It doesn't make a lot of sense. Presumably if Cerrone wins he's the #1 contender for the lightweight belt, but he's lost to RDA twice already and has already abandoned the division...

Nah Kabib vs Ferguson is the number 1 contender fight in the lightweight division. If Cerrone wins Conor will probably drop back down.

Exactly. Cerrone is basically taking it purely for the money. It does nothing for either him or Conor in terms of their career.

Not at all blaming him. Just I'd choose someone else if I was the UFC, a fight that makes a bit of sense would be nice.

There isn't really any fight that makes divisional sense in this situation. You're basically just going to be doing a fun fight. The question is who it's going to be against. My bet is Diaz.

Pettis, Khabib, Nate Diaz all options. Aldo at catchweight for a featherweight title would as well.

Correct me if i'm wrong but if it's a catchweight fight then they couldn't fight for the title right?
