The MMA thread

I sort of doubt now that Aldo will ever fight McGregor again. Seen an interview with Dana that confirms this, says they offered Aldo the fight first and he said no. So he isn't that keen.

With McGregor looking to move up for the light and welterweight belts can't see him having too many more fights at featherweight.

Isn't there some big clearance time for MMA fighters who get knocked out like Aldo? He only fought 3 months ago. People take a throwaway comment a bit to seriously as well. I know McGregor is good for a quote and stirring it up (no doubt he'll mention Aldo) but I seriously doubt he thinks Aldo would ever of taken the fight. To me it seems like Dana White's way of promoted McGregor as the man they all fear or something. Aldo won't be ready for a fight I imagine more than he isn't keen.

I feel a bit sorry for Aldo though, he definitely deserves a rematch for how long he's been at the top in that division. Like you said though I just don't seen McGregor fighting at FW again.

I think realistically he should probably fight Frankie for the belt when McGregor vacates it and then move up to lightweight if he wants a rematch before he retires.

Edit: Also I believe it was Aldo's management that turned it down because he isn't in shape. Not Aldo himself.

I mean yeah usually you can't fight for a while after a knockout. Not sure how long that is but i doubt the UFC would have offered him the fight if he wasn't cleared to actually fight.

And my opinion that they'll never fight isn't based off one quote or me thinking Aldo is afraid or anything. Simply that Aldo doesn't fight that often, and i actually have my doubts if McGregor will ever fight at FW again. He seems to be intent on moving right up to welterweight. I personally think if he had won the LW belt in a few weeks he would have vacated the FW one.

Aldo was under medical suspension to fight for until the beginning of February, pending a doctor checking him out.

Conventional wisdom is after a big knockout like that not take a fight for 6-12 months, but for some these guys they need the money bad enough to risk it.

Sometimes part of me is unsure how much truth people like Dana White give, especially in relation to his Number 1 cash cow in Conor. I think some of the stuff he said was probably throw away comments more than anything.

I don't disagree with you on the rest though. I thought the same, he'd be a double title holder for a couple weeks (if he won) then get rid of the FW title. Looking back at him during his time at FW he looks ridiculously ill but I never really noticed at the time!

Yeah seeing his recent pictures and videos he is a much bigger guy than we have seen while he was at FW. The way he looks at FW weigh ins is ridiculous, that can't be healthy long term.

If he had beaten RDA in a few weeks then he could probably have pushed for the welterweight title at ufc 200. He'd probably have held on to the featherweight title until after that if he could. After all, if you have two titles then why not go for a third?

RDA pulling out puts an end to that though.

Apparently Nick will be in attendance as well. We'll see how well McGregor's trash talks works this time.
They're both set to be there. I'm just interested to see McGregor's approach this time, he usually gets it spot on but he may not even bother this time round...

This will be interesting.

Must piss Mcgregor off. Every time he faces a great competitor, something pops up that tarnishes his win in some way.

i hope Conor still goes up to 170 to fight Robbie Lawler at UFC200. He can deal with the coward RDA and whoever is waiting in line from FW later.

Super fights are just too awesome.

Hardly right that Edgar and Aldo are left stranded while McGregor fights Diaz, RDA and Lawler.

They should make Conor vacate the featherweight title once/if he makes history by beating either RDA or Lawler. Then you could have Edgar v Aldo for the featherweight belt while Conor fights whichever of Lawler/RDA are left.

Assuming he wins you'd then have McGregor v the winner of Aldo/Edgar to reclaim his featherweight title and become the first person to be champion at three weights simultaneously.

"Frankie do you want to fight Conor? no, i cant."

how is that not refusing to fight?

I love Frankie but he should stay quiet and keep training until his next chance arises. He had the chance now but he blew it by not being ready. Aldo the same thing. They should fight each other while Conor is doing his thing.

He's recovering from an injury. He's refusing to fight in the same way paraplegics refuse to walk.

i agree with everything except for Conor vacating the title. It took like 2 years for Cain to be vacated?

he should be allowed to defend the title minimum 1 time per year. As he will be fighting different divisions.

Bit different in this case as Edgar was promised the title shot and Aldo earned it though years of dominance. Both had strong cases to fight McGregor straight away, they've just been sidelined by the UFC allowing McGregor to go for simultaneous titles. In a fair world he'd be made vacate the title, I think. Plus it would make that fight way bigger too.

Aldo took over a year (14months) between his last fight vs Chad and his KO loss vs Conor.

he could defend his FW title in January/February 2017 and would be fair.

in my opinion Aldo lost his right to a rematch base on how easy he went down. Frankie should be next for sure, but he will have to wait, just like Aldo make Conor wait. The most logical step for everybody next, would be a title eliminator between them, unless Frankie prefers to wait till next year to fight Conor.

Mcgregor fanboys... Christ.

Having looked it up Aldo fought Mendes in October and the interim fight for his belt was in July, which puts to rest the idea that interim fights only happen when you've not defended for a year or longer.

Dana is going to be fully aware Mcgregor is never going back to Featherweight, he's just holding up the division for a full year only for him to make an Edgar vs Aldo fight for the vacant belt that could be made right now.

I'm not quite sure how Dos Anjos is a coward for having to pull out of the fight with a broken foot?

of course he is no coward, nobody that steps into the octagon is a coward. My bad.

i should have said afraid or concerned instead of coward. Fear in your mind, can make your bones/body weak. Its undeniable Conor was already inside his head and that's why he got injured. That's my opinion at least.

@Dominos

I have think of that possibility as well. And i hope its not the one. If Conor will never be back at 145, which is possible of course, and he already decided that, then yeah, he is a cnut for keeping the division stagnated until Dana can announce the Frankie vs Aldo fight. But he earned the benefited of doubt.

Im a fanboy of the sport, not only Conor's.

Or he just broke his foot overtraining. Fear doesn't make your bones weak, that's dumb logic.

have you have ever play any high level sports?

Lack of conviction while tackling someone can result in injuries. I see it all the time.
(that's a football example, but its the same for any sport)

If you think your mind doesn't affect your body, good on you i guess....

Lack of conviction does not cause injury. The opposite does. I have played sport and gotten more injuries from going all in then from holding back. He over trained and it paid him back. The main reason why Mcgregor does zero contact leading up to a fight is to prevent this from happening.

My body is rock solid regardless of my mind. But then my mind is also solid too.

Nates insults are so random "They're all on steroids" was so left field it left Mcgregor a bit taken aback.
