The MMA thread

This is going to sound like a ridiculous question but... how brutal is this fight likely to be?

I enjoy watching boxing and am quite partial to sports where there is a physical element (e.g. Ice Hockey where players can throw body-checks etc.) but I've always been put off MMA due to the possibility of seeing something a little more grotesque - compound fractures, dislocations, etc. I appreciate that all sports have a chance of serious injury occurring (the most stomach turning injury I've seen happened on a basketball court) but I feel like MMA is about causing as much damage to your opponent by (almost) any means - making the potential for seeing something sickening increased.

Can somebody give me an idea of what to expect on this front? This fight has piqued my interest.
You often get cuts and some blood

But fractures and breaks are more common in football than mma. Although it can happen

That quick guillotine took out Covington almost instantly. Alves was always looking for that against the wrestler Covington.

Interesting decision from Torres to go with a grappling game for this round. It doesn't really suit her, but I guess she wants to tire out her opponent in order to nullify the reach advantage and make her striking game more effective.

Torres' grappling approach worked well here, in the end. She tired out her opponent, and her quickness and powerful strikes destroyed Jones-Lybarger.

A very good round 1 between Sainz & Faber. Faber, as expected, tried to apply the pressure, but Sainz doesn't look under pressure at all and has kept things under control. His defence has been decent, and he's also put in some strong strikes on Faber. I do expect Faber to take on Sainz and put him under more pressure, but for now, this is a good round for Sainz.

great fight so far, would love to see Saenz take it in the 3rd.

Faber finally looked his age tonight. Although I think he will take the decision

I still want to see TJ v Faber, but judging him on tonight's performance TJ would destroy him

That was a fun fight in the end. Sainz never gave up and managed his energy quite well after Faber tried to go for the TKO. Faber still put in some decent strikes, and his grappling in the end took out any fight that Sainz had, but Sainz had a good control of the match and kept trying to tire out Faber with his kicks, grapples, and knees.

Uriah paying the victim card to try talk himself into one final title fight... TJ and Cruz will kill him.

Faber got a good win there. Saenz put up a strong fight, but Faber was always going to win this given that he was the aggressor for much of the match. Props to Saenz for making this difficult, but Faber's elbows, wrestling, and control of the match won it in the end.

It's honestly one of the best cards ever. Let's hope this fecker delivers

I'm not feeling confident about McGregor though :nervous:

Good control and defence there from Holloway. The leg kicks from Stephens, though, should make it difficult for Holloway to keep his own control, but Holloway hasn't been unsettled so far.

It looks like it could get close in the end. Round 2 was all Holloway with Stephens opening himself up too much for Holloway, but Holloway's starting to tire out. Stephens can still win this with his powerful hits.

That's Holloway's win there, in the end. Holloway has shown great octagon intelligence and reading of the situation, and he's shown great wrestling technique with perfect takedown defences. His counterattacking approach caused several problems for Stephens, and that third round takedown for Holloway should win the match for him.

That was a cracking end to the fight with Stephens just slugging like a drunk outside the pub looking for the hail mary win! Holloway was impressive though.

Stephens should have gone for that after he recovered from the takedown. There was nothing else he could have done, especially since Holloway's takedown defending was perfect in this match.

Yeah he was very passive the whole fight until the last 20-30 seconds. His corner were screaming at him to go in after landing kicks but he was ignoring them. It looked like he was afraid of how quick Holloway was on the counter.

Holloway really doesn't look like he should be as good as he is.

Stephens was trying to test Holloway at the first round, but Holloway didn't look fazed at all, and that confident, calm response perhaps unsettled Stephens. Still, though, when Stephends did cock up his powerful strikes, Holloway did a great job to counter them, and that made things more difficult, so you couldn't easily say that he should have went all-in, particularly as Holloway looked fresh throughout the fight.

What a recovery from Gunni at the end, but Maia is showing why he is a Jiu-Jitsu legend. What a round for Maia. Gunni needs to recover and be more careful, defensively, in order to prevent Maia from dominating him again.
