The MMA thread

Might give this a go tonight. Have no clue how exactly all this stuff works and all, can someone provide me with an easy list of what I need to know? Cheers!

Not much you need to know at all, it's a pretty straightforward sport to figure out while you're watching it.

My picks

Featherweight José Aldo (c) vs. Conor McGregor (ic)
Middleweight Chris Weidman (c) vs. Luke Rockhold
Middleweight Ronaldo Souza vs. Yoel Romero
Welterweight Demian Maia vs. Gunnar Nelson
Featherweight Max Holloway vs. Jeremy Stephens

Heard a lot of noise about tonight. Everyone seems to be talking about McGregor, but I check the p4p rankings and he's only 12th. Is he all hype, or has he not had the chance to step up yet?

McGee vs. Alexandre looks like a good fight so far. Alexandre's kicks and straights have caused McGee lots of issues, but McGee has done a good job taking the bumps and grappling Alexandre. The last punch from McGee must have unsettled Alexandre.

McGee is starting to put some more pressure on Alexandre, but Alexandre's takedown defence has been spot on so far. More of this from McGee, though, and Alexandre can get taken out.

That's McGee's game there. Great Round 3 from McGee, and a great finish in the process as well.

Medeiros is having a tough time trying to figure out Makdessi. Makdessi's controlled the fight so far, and he's done a good job psyching out Medeiros with the counter-hits and kicks.

Medeiros has done a better job now this round, being more ruthless and quick with his punches rather than throwing one and retreating. Makdessi still has control over the fight, but Medeiros is slowly starting to make use of his reach advantage.

Regardless of what happens tonight conor us legit. Tonight will see if he's ready or good enough for greatness.

He's had relatively few fights in the ufc so he's further down the rankings plus he's not the champion of his division.... hopefully tonight will change that.

By the way Aldo is a beast and is one of the best mma fighters of all time already. He has been the only featherweight champion in the future ufc so far.

That was a good fight on all fronts. There was some good mind games between Medeiros and Makdessi, and Medeiros had a great finish to the fight. I don't think he'll win this, though, given that Makdessi has had control of the fight at all times and put in some good kicks and counter-hits.

No, that should be a Makdessi win or, at worst, a draw. Makdessi had control of the whole fight. He controlled the pace and aggression, yet Medeiros still wins?! Makdessi put some pressure on Medeiros as well, which I can't say about Medeiros until the last 10 seconds when Medeiros put in the left hook and knee.

Pre cards not the best place to start... Wait for Main event or record it and watch it tomorrow morning
Was thinking the same thing, stick arouund untill 2/3 local time and watch the rest tomorrow. Thanks for the advice.

Thought Medeiros had it tbh.

Well, I'm not saying that Makdessi had an obvious win there, but I thought he was better than Medeiros over 3 rounds. Medeiros was always afraid to really commit to Makdessi, and Makdessi confirmed that with some good strikes of his own. I think the last 10-15 seconds swayed the decision towards Medeiros.

I'm staying up for this one. I hope Aldo destroys the cocky little twerp.

This is going to sound like a ridiculous question but... how brutal is this fight likely to be?

I enjoy watching boxing and am quite partial to sports where there is a physical element (e.g. Ice Hockey where players can throw body-checks etc.) but I've always been put off MMA due to the possibility of seeing something a little more grotesque - compound fractures, dislocations, etc. I appreciate that all sports have a chance of serious injury occurring (the most stomach turning injury I've seen happened on a basketball court) but I feel like MMA is about causing as much damage to your opponent by (almost) any means - making the potential for seeing something sickening increased.

Can somebody give me an idea of what to expect on this front? This fight has piqued my interest.

You won't see anything that bad unless its a freak occurence. The worst I've seen was Rory McDonald having his nose shattered tbh. For freak injuries you get the usual leg breaks, but no one really had any intention of causing it.
