The MMA thread

I was thinking how would Connor might do when he steps up to this division. Amazing competition.

My opinion is that he'll fit in to the shark tank but he won't particularly stand out above the other absolute killers at the top of that division. He planned very well by making his name at FW first so he is already established and can jump right into a big fight, maybe even a title fight as soon as he moves up. Just look at Ferguson, a 7 fight win streak just to get to where he is now and he's probably still at least 1 more away from getting a shot, it's an almost impossible path in that division with so many fighters.

Yeah he wouldn't have that unbeatable aura he has now. Pretty much the majority of the top 10 could defeat him on their day. The other way around as well. Gonna be good fun.

Cmon ARtem!

Artem didn't throw anything. Too worried about being ready for whatever Hall was going to do, he forgot to actually fight. Saul Rogers was easily the best fighter on the show it seems.

true that! Saul is the real winner in our hearts.

Great performance from Hall. We can do with more Jiu-jitsu masters out there. His signature move is a fearful weapon. Needs to improve his striking but it seems he is already working on that. Tougher than he looks. Good luck to him on his UFC career. Being a lightweight he will need it.

time for the truth!

Mendes vs Edgar.

I go with Chad on this one. but is a 50/50.

Holy shit. That isn't an outcome many saw coming. Poor Chad man, he has absolutely no where to go. 145 is his only division and he's left as a high level gatekeeper now. Happy for Frankie though he deserves it.

Another left hook KO to the list this week. Frankie Edgar next for the title shot. Deserved.

gutted for Chad, hopefully he come back better and renewed. He should try changing volume for speed. Volume seems to work better in higher divisions. Try to be the fastest you can and you might get better results.

Well, I've stayed up til 6 am two nights on the trot for these fight night cards but as I am busy Sunday morning won't be able to watch the big one live. That day is going to drag like hell until I get home and catch up.

My final picks:

Aldo
Weidman
Jacare
Gunnar
Holloway

I have a wedding party today so i might miss some part of the event... hopefully not the last 2 fights.

my final picks:

Connor
Weidman
Romero
Nelson
Holloway

So far so good in terms of quality of the events. Some crazy good fights. Tomorrow should be the icing on the cake... pumped as feck. Dana levels pumped.

Feel for Chad wasn't expecting that, that top 4 is very very strong and each could beat the other on any given day. Frankie has to get his shot now.

Hoping for a war tonight with conor coming out on top but head says Aldo. Either way both guys are awesome.

Aldo
Chris
Romero
Gunnar
Holloway

Man I really like Tony Ferguson, he's so exciting to watch. Felt bad for Chad... where does he go now? Best hope for him is that Aldo wins and he gets the rematch with Conor otherwise he will just be a gatekeeper...

Artem was disappointing. Shows how good Saul was though.

Paige & Sage. McGregor has at least proved he's a very good fighter and most of the hype surrounding him has been created by himself.

P&S haven't done anything yet, and the UFC was already starting to shove them down our throats. It's just funny to see Dana's new projects getting derailed. No disrespect to the fighters, I'm sure they'll have decent careers.

UFC have done nothing wrong in trying to push their own talent to be stars on a mainstream/public level. Sage wasn't derailed what so ever, if anything that was the type of fight he needed. Went in against an experienced guy who tried to take him down and hold him there and he managed to overcome it and get a finish. Thought that was a good job done by him.

Incredible performance from Ferguson last night. Stamina/Condition was the key in that one, Ferguson pressured from the get go. Was a very even fight in that first round but you could see Ferguson's style was slowly tiring Barboza. Such a fantastic fighter to watch Ferguson is, loved this fight.

Chad needs to drop a division. Muscle is obsolete, its about your frame size.

Only a $1m purse for the biggest fight in UFC history?

Definitely no where near the levels of boxing yet then @Raoul !

That's because the way the UFC is structured by way of one company who pay their "employees", not because its not as good as Boxing. We all know Boxing is complete steaming shite these days - its bad enough that grown men punch each other with pillows and even worse when we are bored into submission with the sort of crap we saw in the Klitschko/Fury fight.

The only way Romero will beat Jacare is if his fight plan is as unpredictable as his post-fight speeches. If he does win, I wonder if they'll let him on the mic again in case he offends gay Jesus again

As opposed to grown men hugging each other and rolling around on the floor? If you want to be childish about it.

Money talks mate and UFC isn't even in the same league in terms of size.

Take out the biggest names in boxing. The average boxer gets nothing near that kind of money

But right now the biggest boxing names I would expect to be on far more. The sport is a couple of hundred years old

UFC is definitely not on the same league as Boxing financially or in popularity. However, the UFC as an organization and MMA as a sport is much newer than boxing. Boxing is definitely on the way down. There aren't as many great fighters or characters in the sport anymore and I think a lot of the 'big' fights recently have been underwhelming. On top of this, a lot of potentially gigantic matches haven't happened or have happened too late because of the amount of power the fighters and promoters have outside the ring.

In comparison, UFC is definitely on the rise. This has a lot to do with Brock, McGregor, Ronda etc. UFC fighters are becoming household names and in time I can see UFC surpassing boxing or at least getting close to that. But I feel that as long as it's run by Dana White that buffoon it will always lag a step behind. Just my two cents.

Give it up. UFC is far more entertaining than boxing. They are light years apart in terms of value, excitement, and variety.

Not just that. Compare the rise of MMA from where it was a decade ago to where it is today, then extrapolate over another decade or two and it will be far bigger than boxing.

By "as many", you surely mean "any" surely, at least on the character point....
No there are still some 'characters' in the game of boxing. Like him or not, Tyson Fury is still quite the character and I think David Haye is coming back and they still of course have Pacman for at least one more fight... but the characters in boxing really are a dying breed. I really don't know where boxing will go soon as there isn't a single potential fight that excites me at the moment...

Meh, Fury's no proper character, he's a tryhard who being awkward for the sake of being awkward, very forced. Don't think Haye's that much of a personality either. Can't say too much about Pacman, to be honest.

Just watch this

"I love you my wife"

It's clearly not going to rise at the same rate it has since birth though is it.

I don't mind UFC and will be watching tonight but will always prefer the Queensbury rules myself.

We'll see in a decade anyway.

Just out of curiosity, what were you top 10 fights in boxing over the last two years and what would be your top 5 dream fights in the next two years?

Hoping I catch the main event tonight. Flight gets in late but hope I can make Rockhold-Weidman and Aldo-McGreggor
