The MMA thread

Go on....
I met a bunch of them at the meet and greet in the living room on o'connell street Friday evening. But it was packed. I got selfies with rothwell, arlovski, Ross Pearson, Holloway and Rory McDonald

Far better at the hotel I was staying in as it was under far more relaxed circumstances. On the Friday night I had a chat with Duffy and Poirer. Both of them were chatting with each other too.

I met Tri Star head trainer Faras Zahabi and Mike Brown. Paul Redmond, others I am probably forgetting now. I recognised a load of faces who were mostly trainers but ones you'd see at most events.

Most surreal moment was last night when all of Neil seery's family were at my table in the bar watching his press conference on phones and them celebrating when they found out he got the bonus.

I met paddy holohan this morning and had breakfast beside him. Ben Rothewell was on the other side. infact loads of the fighters were having breakie. The 2 Scottish fighters as well as Darren Till and few others. If anyone was there without knowing what was on last night they would see a load of lads with swollen faces and black eyes and wondered what the feck had happened.

Holohan looked awful, he was chatting to my wife and saying his eye didn't feel too bad but it was his fingers and knees were in bits.

After considering a refund during the week I'm fecking delighted I went ahead. Had a cracking weekend

Did you know the fighters were staying there or was it a lucky coincidence? Pretty cool that you got to chat to and see so many of them.

Yeah I had a fair idea as the hotel is right beside the arena. But I had no idea they would all be so accessible.

It was really just a quick hello and a few words and then left them alone

Loads came in late on Friday and were getting photos of Duffy and Poirer together which I reckon probably got annoying for them after a while

Joanne Calderwood is out of her main event fight against PVZ. Replacement? Thug Rose! I imagine we'll all be happy to watch this one :p

Unbelievable fight. Been bigging up Namajunas for a while now, massive fight for her. IMO she's the future of that division as long as she sorts her training out.

Awesome.

Awesome.

Joanna's been making a few hints about pushing for a flyweight division in the next couple of years so if that happens and she moves up, then Rose could for sure be a potential future champ of the SW division. A popular one too, I like her a lot. By the same token PVZ has been improving and is a relentless fighter so maybe she can surprise everyone again.

What will be telling in this fight is the game plans from both and their training in camp. PVZ clearly has a better training camp and it could benefit her going into this fight.

21 and 23 years old though which is great to see. Surprised the fight has come as soon as it has though. No doubt what so ever this will be a brilliant fight. Could be over in seconds or could be a three round war. Just love everything about this fight, they really need to promote the hell out of this, it'll do them big favors to help push the Straweight division.

Well it is a precursor to some big December cards so it might not receive loads of attention but even being in a main event already is testament to the work they've done to promote PVZ in particular. Now Rose can get some of that deserved love from the brass too. I'm definitely looking forward to it. December should be a great month for UFC action. This fight card is followed by Mendes - Edgar the following night and UFC 194 the night after that. Then LW title fight and JDS vs Overeem the week after. Hopefully the injury plague stays away for once.

Rousey was so weird at those weigh ins. I'm kind of wondering what the heck that was about. I still think she'll flip Holly on her head and armbar her though. Holly's only chance to win is a surprise head kick ko which is very unlikely. Can't wait to see Joanna in action again in the co main. Also Hunt - Bigfoot and Hall - Whittaker for a solid main card.

I realise in the states arenas don't fill up until we approach the main card but for a first ever event in Melbourne I was expecting it to look a lot more packed for the prelims

I thought this city was meant to be starved for mma

Main card picks:
Rousey
Jedrzejczyk
Hunt
Whittaker
Struve

I love this main card, expecting every fight to be fantastic. I'm pretty confident in all of the above picks bar Whittaker, that one could go either way, depends what Hall turns up tonight.

I find that weird too. Especially since they would have paid some big money for their seats, I would want to watch everything even if it is 6 hours or whatever it is.

Even thought the stadium was only a fraction of the size Dublin was pretty much full for the 1st prelim 2 weeks ago

So yeah it is disappointing

I don't know a lot about UFC but I can't image having the nickname ''The Gremlin'' helps yourself confidence.

Poor Chap

That was a really ugly win for Martinez. Lots of sloppiness, especially boxing wise.

That was a vicious kick. Referee should have stopped the fight after that. Fortunately Sobotta didn't take much damage after that.

Crowd silent.
Rogan: Crowd silent as they are polite fans.
Crowd boos
Rogan: They are booing as they are first time fans.

rofl

"This is the most respectful crowd."

A couple of minutes later... "People are booing because they've no idea what's going on there."

Edit - @Sylar beat me to it.

It was a terrible fight but there was plenty of good prelims and the crowd were shit for them too

I don't think they will be returning to Melbourne again in a hurry

Isnt it like 2pm there?

TBH, I think the crowd will be good for the main events (and for hot fights).
