Mystic Mac calling the fight already.

I've lose a bit of respect for Aldo to be honest, this isn't the first time he's done this.

Why would Aldo risk losing his belt as a result of injury when he could fight him completely fit at a later date. If McGregor is "all that", he should clobber Mendes and fight Aldo a few months later. If Mendes wins, then McGregor will have to justifiably fight his way back into a title fight.

Fair play to McGregor and Mendes for fighting on short notice I guess.

You'd think someone with a track record of pulling out through injury would train smarter prior to the biggest fight in his career.

He's sort of losing his belt anyway isn't he given McGregor/Mendes will be for a interim title?

Disappointing news. Not that I don't like the Mendes fight but it just seems wrong after all the months of build up and the whole world tour thing that we aren't even going to get that fight.

Earlier today Dana was saying he was near 100% certain that Aldo would be fighting. :wenger:

You mean train with less intensity ? Why would he do that prior to, as you say, the biggest fight of his career. Bottom line is if McGregor is what his hype suggests, he will dispatch Mendes. Although I don't know how that's going to happen since Mendes fought Aldo very well.

On the other hand, look what Cormier managed after getting a call for a title fight on very short notice.

I guess the difference between Aldo and McGregor now is that McGregor still walks the walk.

Avoiding injury is hardly walking the walk. He still has to prove it, and since he got the original Aldo fight without being the number 1 contender, he will now have to rightfully go through the number one contender in order to reach Aldo. A bit of justice in a way.

As if Aldo has never walked the walk? Pfft get outta town. The difference is one is a proven beast and dominant champion and the other is still somewhat of a mystery, albeit an exciting prospect.

Speaking of the Aldo-Mendes 2 fight, I watched it back the other day and on second viewing it was nowhere near as close as I remember. Aldo took some shots to be sure but overall it was quite a clear and dominant performance.

Still feel he'll dispatch Mendes, just annoying as I feel he still has to beat Aldo to be true champion. Be shit for the featherweight division if Mendes wins now I think.

I'm referencing the fact both we're very mouthy in the build up to this fight, more so McGregor but he still got a reaction from Aldo. UFC have invested a lot into this fight, it's been hyped for months and then Aldo gets injured, there may have been nothing he could have done about it but it's still extremely disappointing.

You don't spar with that much intensity less than 3 weeks before a fight.

The number 1 contender already lost twice against Aldo.

I think it will be good for everyone, except for the loser of the McGregor v Mendes fight. If Mendes wins, he will get his final shot at Aldo, so he does have a lot to fight for as well. Its the fans that win out here in the end, as each of the top fighters will have fought one another by the time the belt is unified between interim and full.

Is the prospect of a third Aldo Mendes fight really that exciting though?

Actually, I just checked and Edgar is the #1 contender at the moment. Seems like he has been overlooked in all of this. He probably would've got this if he didn't just fight last month.

Mendes was one until recently so. Edgar has also been well beaten by Aldo, as was Lamas.

I wonder if McGregor - Mendes will still be the main event? I imagine it will be but pretty ridiculous that a full title fight (of a higher weight class as well) will play second fiddle to an interim bout.

McGregor has more to lose fighting Mendes over Aldo but I doubt he cares, at least he still has over a week to prepare for a different fight.

Interesting thought but it's probably still the McGregor show to be honest, Mendes is a massive name too.

Does Gunni Nelson have a good chance to win his fight?? I only watch UFC when he and McGregor fights

I'm sure it will since McGregor is probably the UFC's biggest PPV draw at the moment.

He definitely has more to lose but perhaps more to gain as well if things go his way. A win over Mendes and an interim title will really give him the legitimacy to make a rearranged unification fight against Aldo huge.

Yeah, a champion vs. champion McGregor and Aldo fight would probably be bigger than what UFC 189 is gonna be, hopefully we don't have to wait too long for it to materialise but I'd imagine the UFC will want plenty of time to promote and milk the cash cow.

McGregor v Mendes could be boring. All Mendes will probably do is try and close the gap, take McGregor down and sit on him for 25 mins. McGregor won't be easy to get down though.

Aldo and McGregor would have kicked the bejaysus out of each other. It would have been phenomenal.

One lesson they might learn from this whole saga is not to drag things out too much like they have with this. Move things along quicker and there might be less chance things go wrong. Hopefully so anyway!

McGregor has a significant reach advantage over Mendes, it'll be a strange fight. I'm intrigued to see how the contest does pan out but not nearly as excited.

Yep, they really did place nearly all their eggs in the one basket, just lucky Mendes was ready to step up.
