Issue is, if this was a month out we could get Edgar or Mendes, but who the feck is gonna step in with 2 weeks to go?

Can't see anyone stepping up this late.

The fight would probably have to be postponed with Lawler vs. MacDonald promoted to main event...

There is an announcement next week on a UFC event coming to Dublin, Aldo vs. McGregor then? :)

UFC 191 is also in the MGM, pretty much nailed on I'd say.

Surprise surprise, something like this was always a possibility after lumping all their eggs into the one basket with the world tour etc, months before the fight. Luckily UFC 189 will still be fine by average ppv standard with the welterweight title fight. My guess is this one will be pushed back to a later card. They won't have someone step in and do a different match up after all the rivalry build up.

Apparently it was Renan Barao who injured him with a spinning kick. He can't be a popular man with the UFC brass at the moment, with the UFC 177 debacle and now this .

I don't they will find it hard at all to find someone willing to take the fight in 24 hours notice let alone 2 weeks

But I will be gutted if it's not Aldo

In light of recent reports regarding the status of UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo, UFC has received official medical confirmation from several doctors that Aldo did not suffer a broken rib. Following a review of the scans, it has been determined that the champion suffered a bone bruise to his rib and cartilage injury during training.

With this news, Aldo has expressed that he has every intention of facing Conor McGregor at UFC 189.

While Aldo has indicated that he will compete in Las Vegas on July 11, UFC has confirmed a contingency plan. No.1 featherweight contender Chad Mendes will face McGregor for the interim UFC featherweight championship in the event Aldo cannot compete.

UFC remains committed to delivering the featherweight and the welterweight championship fights at UFC 189 during UFC International Fight Week in Las Vegas.
Statement on UFC 189

I feel McGregor is definitely a good enough fighter to target and expose Aldo's ribs, it could well be a factor in the fight and something people won't enjoy... At least we know we're likely to get a rematch should Conor win.

I’m getting more confident as we get closer to the fight

Will McGregor just be too explosive for him? I think I would be far less confident if/when he eventually faces Mendes and especially Edgar

Irish people, in your opinion...if McGregor wins this, where would it rank in Irish sporting achievements?

I realise it will not be widely recognised by many sadly, but it would be right up there for me.

Agree. McGregor winning the belt would be a magnificent achievement, especially when you consider nobody else has held it! It'd be an Irish sporting achievement I'd rank up there with some of the very best.

But I wonder would the news receive much recognition from anyone other than Irish males between the age of twenty and forty. Doubt McGregor would be lauded as a national hero à la Katie Taylor, hope I'm wrong though because what McGregor has done for raising interest in MMA in Ireland is probably more than I can remember any other Irish sporting person doing for their sport.

He's done a lot for MMA here in Ireland, it has gained a lot more popularity thanks to his promotion of it and his success in the cage. Still though, only yesterday afternoon after the drama surrounding the title fight possibly being cancelled a Radio DJ was really laying into MMA / UFC as being little more than a pikey fight.

If he wins, there'll be a bit of hype for a week or two and it'll die down quick enough simply because of how its portrayed here. Personally I'm glad to see the fight back on, but I'm torn. Part of me would like to see him win, but his attitude is awful sometimes and it grates on me so there's also a part of me that would love to see him get knock the feck out cold and his ass handed to him!

Too explosive you say? :smirk:

Aldo hasn't looked quite the same in recent times, however he has been fighting the likes of Edgar and Mendes...

I'm excited for sure as no one really knows how it's going to go, I just hope the injury doesn't bother Aldo too much. I don't want to see someone who has gone unbeaten for 10 years look a shadow of himself due to injury and get destroyed. If it is at all serious I'd rather Mcgregor fight Mendes.

If McGregor wins, no doubt you'll get some people who'll say he only won because of Aldo's injury!

On the flip side, if Aldo wins, people will say he beat McGregor despite and injury!

I'm liking how UFC are handling this except one major thing... I can't believe it will be an interim title if Aldo is injured. I mean come on! Cain was injured for over a year (I think) before they made that title interim. Dominick Cruz was out for an awfully long time also before that one became interim so Aldo is really being shafted hard. I would be pissed if I were him the way UFC are treating him in favour or McGregor who Dana White clearly sees as a walking talking dollar sign.

Really? shit! Didn't realize it was interim. Been crazy week and haven't had chance to read up on it all properly.

I guess it would depend how the fight goes and how Aldo looks. Although I'm sure there would always be some no matter what.

In other MMA news it looks like the bid to get it sanctioned in NY will fall short again, so that Madison Square Garden card can be cancelled now.

No doubt the UFC didn't back enough re-election campaigns in the assembly or something.

We haven't seen Aldo like that since his wec days.

Honestly I think he is a great fighter and a couple of years ago I wouldn't think McGregor had much of a chance. I just think right now it could be a different situation

McGregor's coach saying they won't know whether he's facing Aldo or Mendes until the day before the fight, which can't be ideal for preparation.

That's a damn shame about NYC, they seemed fairly confident about it this year as well

MSG will have to wait I suppose.

It's crazy though, it would bring in plenty of cash surely?

Arguably the biggest problem is that it just maintains the thriving murky underworld of unsanctioned mma in NY that is actually quite a thriving trade from what I understand. Fights without HIV testing or qualified refs for example, and not restricted to unified rules.

Yeah, Namajunas will need about 2 wins to get a look in at a shot though.

Waterson is coming off of a loss so needs that bounce back victory now she's in the UFC. Gadelha who only lost to Joanna by split decision is fighting on the Rousey card so a win there could have her in contention. VanZant isn't ready yet but they're pushing her big too. Decent division for sure. Waterson fights next month so agree, every chance she could be the next challenger with a win.

I just noticed that Maryna Moroz, the Ukrainian girl that beat the shit out of Jojo Calderwood a few months ago, is fighting again in August. She'll have to be getting close to a shot if she wins again.

I think it would rank up there as one of the best Irish sporting achievements ever.

I think it'll be Aldo. With just a bruised rib at this stage, he should be clear to fight.

I doubt McGregor wants to fight Mendes. Who the hell wants an interim belt? If it was postponed, Aldo could fight in a couple of months anyway. There shouldn't be an interim belt. Everybody would know who the real champion is anyway. It would just be the UFC's way of keeping the thousands of Irish happy who are spending a shit load of money to watch McGregor fight for the belt in Vegas.

Would be just to keep the travelling fans happy. Plus they really want McGregor to win the belt.

He is a big a money maker as they have ever had.
