The MMA thread

No he isn't....he's the fighter everyone in Ireland is talking about.

As far as everyone else is concerned, he's just one of a number of promising fighters around at the moment. If he is getting some extra buzz, it's because of his cringe-worthy shitbag antics in press conferences.

He's still a very good fighter - but yes, behaving like a WWE character at pressers is definitely getting him a lot of coverage.

The biggest fight of the year and the contender is quite an exciting and unknown entity, he's fighting a seemingly unbeatable opponent, it makes for something worth discussing.

Look, the guy he is fighting is Jose Aldo, arguably the best pound-for-pound fighter in the UFC. Whoever Aldo fights is going to receive coverage for this reason, let alone someone who uses the opportunity in Aldo's spotlight to disgrace himself and the UFC at every opportunity. The arrogance of Mcgregor and his band of supporters to think that this fight is all about him is embarrassing....Mcgregor is still a nobody in MMA. If you read the last few pages of this thread, it's all Mcgregor this and Mcgregor that....and it's almost all coming from Irish posters. WE GET IT, Mcgregor is Irish and the Irish MMA fans are excited, but enough already.

I'm not claiming McGregor is anything but I feel he deserves to be taken seriously. As I said Aldo is seemingly unbeatable but he's fighting an exciting contender we don't know much about. I'm probably 50/50 for the fight, maybe 60/40 for Aldo. McGregor will surprise a few with this fight.

Good lord you're bitter.

In what way is McGregor a nobody? A title challenger who is probably one of the sport's most recognizable figures atm? I'd have thought that makes him a fairly noteworthy fighter.....

As for him embarrassing the UFC, it doesn't seem like they mind too much given the way they're pushing him. If this ends up reflecting badly on the them then it is entirely their own fault.

He's by far the most talked about male fighter currently on the biggest (albeit terrible) mma forum in the world. Love him or hate him (personally indifferent) he is a huge draw for the UFC right now. Of course his stock could plummet quickly if he loses badly.

He'd get moderate support in those places - nothing out of the ordinary. I think a lot of people are getting fed up with his Muhammad Ali circa 1966 trash talk and wouldn't mind seeing Aldo put him in his place.

That's sort of the whole point though, isn't it? His shtick only works if people are willing to pay to see him get beaten. He might not have as much support as other fighters but I'd guess there are quite a lot of people who really hate him too, which is just as good from his point of view.

What is th biggest MMA forum?

I'm on Sherdog and they're obsessed with him.

He's not just a bag of air, people, he's a deadly knockout artist. His form is incredible, watch his highlight reel and just look at the momentum he gets into his punches.

He reminds me of the Iceman a bit, not in style but in the way he is using the KO to incredible effect to just run through people. They both stand like cocked shotgun ready to fire both barrels.

But there's no doubt that if he wasn't a virtuoso shit talker that he'd be fighting Mendes or someone like that instead of Aldo already.

Yeah Sherdog is the one I was referring to. Don't rate it as a forum but I lurk it to get the latest news and gossip.

Reminds me of Rousey when she first got the Strikeforce title shot against Tate. "Big mouth talked her way into a bigger fight than she should be at, mediocre shit talker, will be shown up against a real fighter, judo's shit at the top, etc, etc..."

Then she won, and it was a fluke. Then she won again and again, and again.....

Not saying that's what will happen with McGregor(he's obviously involved in a much bigger challenge against the best), but the similarities with that time are interesting.

Moving away from Mcgregor and onto more serious matters, who do we reckon would win the following fight - an adult male chimp vs a prime Brock Lesnar/Fedor Emilianenko pairing?

Leon Edwards with an 8 second knockout of the Polish Pistola. Second fastest knockout in UFC welterweight history. If he continues his development we could have a very good young British fighter to root for.

Ouch Jojo Calderwood loses to an unknown by armbar in 1:30. That will really damage her hype train. Bad loss for Scotland.

So Cro Cop won ? Just had a look at his Wiki and had no clue he's been so active in kickboxing over the years.

Coverage on Pick is awful, standard definition and terrible commentary. It doesn't look/feel like UFC at all.

Make sure you catch it, it's one of the best mma moments in recent years for general nostalgic satisfaction. He was getting mauled for the first two rounds and managed to turn it around. Classic comeback that really saved a mediocre card.

Didn't enjoy the card at all. Wassn't live, which I didn't know and accidentally found out that Mirko wins his fight. Balls

Cro Cop did well, was losing the fight till that elbow to the jaw that effectively had Gonzaga dazed.

Moroz was very good against Calderwell but it seems that the strawweight ladies division is rather light with competent fighters. That said I enjoyed the Joanna fight against Cookie Monster and Moroz calling Joanna out in front of the Polish crowd was ballsy.

If they had to fight though, Joanna would win hands down, just too much experience for her against a fighter who only started fighting 18 months ago. That said Moroz was impressive against Calderwell for being a rookie.

That said, I'm really looking forward to Macheda-Rockhold next weekend.

Pumped for this fight. Machida is a completely different level for Rockhold, the real test for him here. Personally think Machida will win and would still love to see him go against Weidman again. Can't knock Rockhold though, he's been finishing people in devastating fashion and looking immense.

UFC 187 in just over a month. Legit looks like one of the best cards in feck knows how long. That card is crazy stacked.

This Paige VanZant chick is getting alot of publicity, mainly due to her looks, she is pretty hot though

http://mmajunkie.com/2015/04/fellow-fighters-ufcs-paige-vanzant-is-clearly-marketable-up-to-a-point

It's pretty hard for an in-shape 21 year old girl not to be considered good looking by most people's standards. I mean, we live in a world where even Ronda Rousey has hoards of men proclaiming her to be hot.

But on the MMA, I guess it says a lot about the competitiveness of the women's divisions in the UFC when a 21 year old pretty girl with limited experience in any martial art (a blue belt in BJJ seems to be her highest ranking) or combat sport (no boxing, kickboxing wrestling background either) can come in and start winning fights.

I never understood how people find Ronda hot, I just cant see what guys see in her at all. In terms of Vanzant getting all commercial deals just on looks, probably unfairly as it generalises all the women, but its the reason why womens mma, and sports are never taken really seriously

With them dropping their clothes in a jiffy for various magazines, sponsors etc. Plus womans MMA to me idk it just seems funny when they fight, they seem so awkward how they fight and move, to me anyway

Extreme weight cutting before the weigh-in needs to be stopped.

Fighters like Silva and Weidman (who weigh in at just under 185 lbs to make Middleweight) are back up to 200 lbs by the following day for the their fights and Silva allegedly walks around at 230lbs in between fights....some Middleweight! And to use Caf-favourite Conor Mcgregor as another example, he fights at 145 lbs but weighs as much as 160 lbs only days before the fight. It kind of makes a mockery of the concept of weight divisions.

Boxing is no better of course. Pacquiao's camp are expecting Mayweather to be at around 160 lbs on fight night, despite him having to make 147 lbs for the weigh-in. Pacquiao is unlikely to go more than a couple of lbs over the 147 lbs limit, meaning there will be more than a whole weight class between them when they step into the ring.

Fighters start somewhere, you don't suddenly shit on a division just because a newcomer comes up and starts winning fights.

My Picks:
Herrig over VanZant
Swanson over Holloway
Souza over Camozzi via murder
Machida over Rockhold

Some nice fights on the undercard too, very nice card. All focus seems to be on VanZant, Herrig is a star though, really hope she get's the win here.

Cutting extreme amount of weights can also have an adverse affect on fighters as well though, just because you are coming in heavier doesn't necessarily mean you have an advantage.

She's only had 1 fight in the ufc against a similarly inexperienced opponent. There's every chance she gets shut down by one of the gatekeepers of the division tomorrow. The strawweight division is young but has a lot of potential. There's a lot of very exciting fights in there and it's more stacked than women's bantamweight for sure. The champ is a six time muay thai world champ and there are at least 2 other muay thai world champs I know of, plus a couple of jiu jitsu blackbelts and all-american wrestlers, enough talent about for it to be competitive . The amount of buzz the recent fights in the division like Joanna/Esparza, Jojo/Moroz and (upcoming) PVZ/Herrig have gotten tells me the UFC could be onto a winner in the long term. I think it benefits from being a bit of a novelty, in that it doesn't exactly fit the traditional gender stereotypes and thus is seen as a bit of a spectacle. Some people will never go for it, but it definitely has the ingredients to attract attention and hold it's own as one of the higher profile women's sports behind tennis.

I'm with you on weight cutting by the way, not sure what the best route would be to address it but I feel it has just gone too far in mma these days. It's even backfiring in many cases now, as if fighters just do it for the sake of it, just look at how much better off Rumble is now that he packed it in.It's surely partly responsible for killing the heavyweight division too. The 10 point must scoring system is an even bigger issue that needs addressing though, the way the judges employ it, with an extreme reluctance to score a round anything other than 10-9, makes it totally unsuited to mma.

Looking forward to the card this weekend, hopefully Lyoto gets it done. Back to middle of the night timeslot though so watching it the day after will have to make do. The best thing about the last two cards was being able to watch it live at a reasonable time!

Paige Vanzant is fighting tomorrow night. That is all.
