The MMA thread

Aldo's face looks like thunder. I don't think I've ever seen such a hostile crowd, I thought the Brazilians didn't care but the Irish today. Wow,

The one guy who asked Connor to show Aldo some respect was spot on. He's going to take a lot of rage into the fight.

This Irish media event has truly turned the UFC into a proper joke. They are supposed to have journalists asking the questions, not random idiots in the crowd trying to get on TV.

They couldn't even finish it in Rio it was that bad, New York just as bad for the questions. If you watched these pressers, Q&A's etc consistently you'd see they're always full of drunk morons.

I watched the Brazil one and it wasn't nearly as cringey as this. They actually had reporters asking most of the questions there.

McGregor being McGregor. It sells the fight so what does he care?

I get why a lot of people don't like McGregor but I still find it refreshing to have an Irish athlete who is happy to be an asshole. Normally they're all tediously modest and bland.

His reaction to winning/losing this fight is bound to be more honest than all this ott self-hype so I'll judge him more then, I think.

It's all to sell the fight, yes it's cringing and a bit disrespectful but both fighters will love it as it generates huge interest, more money for them in the future and gets more people watching the fight. It is all a bit WWE but then UFC has had a bit of a rough ride in the media lately so tey could do with some interest for the right reasons (i.e. the fighting) rather than the negative aspects of the sport.

Shows how much you know about UFC. You have a chip on your shoulder when It comes to McGregor. Just don't watch.

It's the same every event and the Brazilians were just the same. Your a bitter man.

McGregor is being such a tool on this tour

If anyone watched his cameo on Ultimate Fighter 20 you'll have seen what I'm sure is closer to the real Conor Mcgregor. He's doing a great job of building up the hype and playing to the crowd for this tour though. I bet Dana is delighted.

Edit: http://www.ufc.com/tuf/media/tuf-20-conor-mcgregor-visits-gym

Ive met him a couple of times and know a few of his friends, he is very sound lad and very approachable, he knows what sells tickets and what got him where he is now anyway

that was good fun. fecking irish fans

the hype for this fight is just ridiculous! Its still a long way to go before this fight, but damm they make sure they gonna sold out.

I don't recall random people's kids screaming at McGregor in Brazil. It was a disgrace. That's not to take away from McGregor probably being a nice guy, its more so a stain on the UFC attempting to go WWE to promote a fight. If they want to be taken seriously they ought to get rid of this sort of thing.

WWE performers don't act like animals to promote a ppv.

You didn't watch it all then or maybe it was because it was in another language it didn't have the same impact on you.

They do this with most fights and the crowd gets behind their local guy. This isn't something new. The only difference is McGregor thrives on it and has a big mouth.

I'm talking about the circus mentality - its not just the disgraceful act of having random people in the audience control the media event. Its not about McGregor, its the UFC prostituting itself into a WWE circus to sell PPV.

Its a media/fan event. There is section for both.

The ones that don't realise that McGregor does what he does to sell a fight and maximize its potential to make money.

He shouldn't need to "sell the fight". People interested in it should know that its a big fight. We saw the same nonsense from Chael Sonnen. Its really uncalled for.

My point is it shouldn't be. It should be a proper media event attended by proper journalists asking good questions. Not the orgy of nonsense we saw today, and probably at other similar pressers.

I guarantee you 50 years ago people said the same about Ali. In fact, I know they did. McGregor is a marketing genius, if he can fight to the standard he can talk, he'll be the greatest of all time.

The fan questions are just cringeworthy. I felt second hand embarrassment for Brazil in the first leg, and first hand embarrassment today.

What you've got to realise is that Ireland doesn't get a lot of talent that reaches the pinnacle of their sport so when someone like this comes along the whole country supports him. its a completely different mentality than a country like the US where you have multiple champions in different sport.

They're not targeting die hard UFC fans with events like this, they'll buy it regardless. They're targeting people who may not know about or are undecided about buying it. It's common in boxing and has been for years.

I can see why people don't like it but the UFC is a business and the more PPV sales for them the better, the best way to sell any fight it seems (Boxing, UFC, WWE) is by having the guys "hate" each other.

People will always jump on bandwagons for stuff like this. Its all marketing and as cringing as it might be it'll prove to be successful.

But its to promote the event to the fans. The 'sensible' media can all be answered in one press conference. These events are to get the fans interested in the fight.

That I can understand. Like i said, not a diss on Ireland. Its a diss on Dana and this insatiable need to overhype the fight as if it couldn't generate enough hype without the circus.

Tell that to Mohammed Ali. Or Mike Tyson. Or Floyd Mayweather.

Selling the fights made them a tonne of money, which undoubtedly makes them more important boxers from history than similar fighters who didn't draw a dime.

Like everything, money talks

Yeah I know its about making more money. My bigger point is the UFC needs to mind not turning into a circus like sport where hype trumps professionalism just to earn bigger PPV numbers.

Professional boxing isn't exactly a paragon of morality either.
