The MMA thread

Longshot but anyone here going to UFC 178 in Vegas? Got my ticket sorted yesterday! woop woop!
It's the first US show I will have been to but it looks good on paper. Praying for no injuries!

Nice one, post whatever pics you take on here!

Will do. I was at the Dublin card a few weeks ago. Honest to god is was the most incredible sporting atmosphere I've ever been in. I don't have much to boast about in life but I do get around my events and that was by far and away the best thing I've ever been to.

Here is me looking a little worse for wear outside taking a selfie with The Real Deal Ross Pearson :)

EDIT: Crikey none of you need to see my ugly mug in extra large size ... the tweet is HERE with the pic

TRT Vitor vs Current Vitor

Probably the fact that Vitor looks like he's been on the same crash course diet as myself. Not TRT = leanass Vitor

I know Vitor is a drug cheat and all that, and should never have been licensed but those pictures prove nothing. Look at Weidman, he looks like some random chubby guy. Neither of them are in fight camp so it doesn't prove much at all to me? I'd be surprised if Vitor even quit taking stuff.

It is pretty clear Vitor has been juicing all his life. I have never seen him this small and emaciated. This was how 19 year old Vitor looked.

They were all big dudes just not cut as having low bodyfat has no usefulness in MMA. However, I'm sure PEDs did help them pack up muscle, train harder and recover faster.

Size does matter in MMA especially against powerful wrestlers. It better to be bigger and fatter and cut down for weigh-ins but I'm not sure how easy it will be to pack on muscle during a training camp without the help of extra juice.

My point was that looking at pictures of them, you wouldn't have said they were juicing. So Vitor looking skinny now (and he doesn't really to me?) doesn't mean anything as he isn't even in fat camp.

He's definitely a cheat. I'll be interested to see if they really do random test him.

Looks very set up to me. Guys I really think a lot of this is all just media hoopla. I wouldn't be surprised one bit if it is all just a total work.

Don't for one minute think I'm not liking it though :) It's about time we had a 'storyline' like this going on.

Not a chance it's a work IMO.

Just highlights once again what a twat Jon Jones is.

looks pretty real to me (the beef between the 2)... but then again, words mean nothing until they face each other on the ring.

Can't fecking wait for this fight!! Hopefully Cormier will beat the crap out of Jones and pull him down to earth for a while. I really don't know much of Jones outside the octagon, but he sounds like a proper cnut.

Cheers mate! Its turned mental...The level of bad blood isn't quite Mike Tyson vs Mitch Green just yet, but its heading that way.

I haven't seen anything to suggest its fake. It wouldn't surprise me at all if it turns a bit more cordial post-fight, but at the moment I'm certain they legitimately hate each other.

I actually think Jones just wants to get inside DC's head and it seems like it's working. This to me, shows how much of a threat Cormier is for Jones.

Holy shit...this just gets better and better, it's going to be a long aul wait. Cheers for the link phil.

No way it is a work.

Why are you two so sure?

I mean, look at how much of a buzz it generated. Look at how McGregor doesn't even bother attempting to split it up, that hints to it being a big publicity stunt in my book.

That's not knocking it if it is worked, it's going to make both guys a tonne of money, I just don't see how you can rule it out so confidently.

It means 'staged' put on for the cameras, predetermined.

Staged yeah, predetermined in this kind of incident is pushing it, even things that are worked can get out of control and become very real very fast.

Gotcha, thanks. Is it terminology used in... *spit* ...WWE?

Yeah it's pro wrestling terminology, but since the UFC is basically run as a wrestling promotion but with legit fights it's not the only term very commonly used.

It's no more a "wrestling promotion" than boxing, so don't see the similarity myself.

MMA and Boxing are competitive sports, which admittedly use various PR tactics involving over-hyping the animosity between combatants to get bums on seats.

WWE is homoerotic theatre aimed primarily at people with a pre-teen mental age, based around ludicrous "storylines", inside and outside the ring. At least that's how I remember it. Haven't watched it since primary school. Definitely very different to the slanging matches you occasionally get between pro boxers or MMA fighters.

Well it's not at all, pretty much everything that has become the norm with these slanging matches can stem back to Ali, who himself learned everything he knew of that from Gorgeous George, the wrestler. You're making the mistake of thinking pro wrestling = WWE. In fact WWE is one of thousands of promotions, all of which do things their own way, it's the biggest yes, but that's irrelevant.

Also, they are run very similar in many ways (more so UFC than boxing), it's all about building stars you can market to Dana. At the time Brock Lesnar was the biggest possible star, so what did they do? Put him right in with the elite, despite him being nowhere near ready. It's all about the money.

EDIT: UFC actually won the wrestling promotion of the year award 6 years in a row I think it was.

Again, I'm no expert (when I last watched, WWE was called WWF) but the one thing they all have in common is that they aren't competitive sports. Which means they're basically not sports at all.

That is an obvious and simple differentiator from combat sports like MMA and boxing. Hence there's a world of difference between staged animosity between two contestants in a competitive sport and the overblown drivel that surrounds WWE and the like, where the actual results are as fictional as whatever imaginary beef exists outside the ring.

For all that the UFC likes to hype and develop "stars" all that matters in the end is talent and ability. Keep winning fights and they'll get their chance, no matter how good or bad they are at hyping up fights. It's incredibly disrespectful to these athletes to try and compare their careers with the bloated 'roid-heads slathering on fake tan and baby oil to "compete" in the WWE, where their acting chops and ability to look good in shorts are just as important as whatever limited skill set they might have mastered inside the ring.
