The MMA thread

He is being hyped by the UFC because they know they'll make huge money out of him. They have protected him to a certain extent so far in my opinion, but he probably had to be. He hadn't fought anyone half of the standard of some of the UFC top 20s. The fight with Poirier will be huge. We will see how good he is. Personally I think his standup will do it for him against Poirier. McGregor's problem will be the top level wrestlers (well that's what everyone presumes). John Kavanagh is adamant that his wrestling and wrestling defence is pretty damn good though. The fact is that we don't know how good McGregor is until he faces someone like that. Poirier should suit McGregor more-so than the likes of Guida. Although I'd back him against Guida also. Guida will leave himself open for shots whenever they are standing. Conor could really hurt him.
He created his own hype mostly, to be fair. The firs interview on the MMA Hour (before he fought Brimage) with Ariel Helwani was when more people outside of Ireland and the UK started talking about him and it just snowballed from there. I think Helwani added more to his hype than anyone else, as he seen to take a real liking to him after that first interview. Then the UFC just ran with it, but I don't think they created it, or even added much steam to it originally.

I also don't agree he has been protected, he has fought guys around similar rank to himself, which is how it should be. Brimage was on a solid 4 fight win streak before he fought Conor, he beat Max Holloway with a fecked up knee for half the fight and Holloway is not an easy fight, and he was originally scheduled to fight Cole Miller who has an excellent submission game.

Correct about the wrestling of course, no idea how good it is. That switch thing (dunno wrestling moves) he hit on Brandao when Brandao had the body lock and tried to take him down, and Conor reversed it, looked nice though.

Yeah the switch was excellent. It has certainly made me think that his wrestling may be better than people think. His wrestling was good against Holloway also.

He may have created his own hype but the UFC have certainly jumped on to it. Dimming the lights for his Holloway fight for example when he was only on the undercard. That doesn't happen usually for champions, nevermind someone in their second fight.

The fighters he has been matched against so far have definitely suited his style. Miller would probably have been stopped also.

Ah yea, I forgot about that! I think in general the UFC are pretty terrible at hyping their fighters or promoting their fights but maybe it's just part of their policy so that no fighter is bigger than the company.

Yea I guess they suited his style but still tough enough fights as a newcomer to the promotion, I thought. It's funny to think that it is possible he could get a title shot without ever facing any of the better wrestlers in the UFC. If he beats Poirier, then I can see them do McGregor vs Cub Swanson for No1 contender status. I figure Chad Mendes is still getting his title shot regardless of whatever else happens.

Nick Diaz is back! Signed a new 3 fight deal, and looks like it could be Anderson Silva vs Nick Diaz as the first fight they want to make.

I don't care if it makes no fecking sense, that is schweeeet.

This would be such a crazy fight! Diaz did say he would only come back from Anderson or GSP so it must be very likely to happen.

Going to be interesting to see if Anderson still got that confidence and swagger after his injury.

When is Anderson expected to return? Was it early 2015? Seems surprising to me that they would let Diaz wait that long before he fought again, if they have him on a new contract. So many good fights to make though, Diaz vs Lawler 2 would also be awesome.

I was just googling it and you're right. Anderson set for early 2015 return with rumor that Diaz-Anderson could be set for superbowl weekend which would be February 2015.

"UFC superstar Nick Diaz has come out of retirement and has signed a three-fight contract extension in hopes of returning to the Octagon in early 2015."

I got that from the official website so I'm guessing Silva-Diaz will be both of their first fights back.

Yehh he was throwing him around like a rag doll but was pretty clueless when he had him down. Won some money of Cummings though :D

This is the best news I've heard for the sport in a while! Love me some Nick Diaz fights!

Good fights on the main card.surely the main event won't let us down?

Johnson's uppercuts were nasty

Was a pretty epic fight, Brown just couldn't handle Robbie's power.

Robbie's fight against MacDonald was telling because he had the stamina to keep up with him while still throwing power.

If you can do that to MacDonald you can probably do it to Brown.

Brown didn't have the power to keep up, but he's tough as nails and certainly threw good stuff.

Brown really pissed me off with that faking the low blow shit. Otherwise it was a really good fight, Lawler threw some fantastic combinations, but Brown's chin was unreal yet again and he had enough power and variety in his own offence to make Lawler tentative at times. Scorecards were all credible which is always a bonus.

Gus out but Cormier in

Sucks for Gus, but Im actually more excited by Cormier V Jones

Cormier vs Jones is easily the mot excited I've been for a fight in years. I'll possibly combust with joy if Cormier beats him.

Rumble Johnson KOs Little Nog, absolutely brutal.

Rumble is a fecking beast at 205. You pretty much knew what was going to happen in that fight. I'd say one more fight and he can fight the winner of Jones/DC if Gus isn't ready...for the record I'd pick him over Gus anyway.

Just finished watching UFC on Fox. What an absolute mauling by Anthony Johnson. He's a fecking animal.

Dennis Bermudez looked outstanding aswell.

holy shit!!! just come back from holidays and started getting up to date with this (without spoilering myself)...

started with the Brown vs Lawler event and....

DC is going to fight Jones!!!! feck!!!! that makes me happy... specially the confidence of Cormier when talking about it in the FOX studio...

All in for a DC victory.

Didn't liked the Johnson one... you just knew it was going to happen exactly like it did way before the fight started. I want him fighting with the best.

Brown vs Lawler was epic i thought... really really good fun. Both tough feckers... Lawler looking so composed at times. Looking forward for the championship fight.

ps. time for the Dublin evemt...

edit:

McCall
Nelson... impressive.
McGregor...

Anderson is coming back from an incredibly serious injury, the chances of him getting injured again are very high. Add in his age and the chances of him being injured are even higher.

Diaz also has a tendency to fail drug tests.
I see what you are saying, but you could say that lots of fights aren't going to happen if you add injuries and drug tests into the mix. I don't think a leg break is even the worst injury to come back from anyway, especially when the skin didn't break.

If this fight doesn't happen I'll be more pissed than when Overeem vs JDS fell through...fecking two times. feck you, Overeem.

Um, why would the chances of him being injured be higher than normal? Couture didn't get injured more often at 40, neither does Hendo.

Okay, the older you get the weaker you get, but we're talking about an elite athlete in amazing shape. It's not like his leg snapped going for his dentures in the morning.
