The MMA thread

Sonnen's coach has asked for a rematch due to Silva's cheating (greasing with vasoline, grabbing Sonnen's shorts, that he was holding to cage to get more power in the knee and that the knee itself was to the face and illegal).

Mental.

I hope not. I regained some degree of respect for Sonnen after watching his post fight comments, but he's going to have to work his way back up the ladder before he gets another title shot.

feck, was anyone watching Munoz vs Weidman? One of the coolest knockouts I've seen. Really late stoppage though, was actually hard to watch Weidman laying about 10 shots on him.

Still, what a fecking elbow.

Just watched it this morning. Cracking shot.

WTF was the ref doing there at the end? Contrast that to the Sonnen stoppage this weekend.

Think Weidman needs another fight or two before a title shot though.

I always think the fighter takes a little bit of responsibility when that sort of shit happens. I know the adrenaline is running high but surely it was obvious that he was punching an unconscious opponent?

Have a lot of of respect for fighters that don't try and land cheap shots on an opponent who's just been KTFO.

Why is this "sport" legal? It has just been banned in Victoria and I hope the other states follow. Boxing is bad enough but this is just legalised thuggery.

It's considerably less dangerous than boxing, Wibble.

In boxing, fights last longer and every fighter that is knocked down gets stood up again, dusted off and allowed to recover sufficiently to take more blows to the head. Also, every single boxing fight involves a lot of punches to the head. In MMA the fight is over within seconds of most concussive blows to the head and a lot of fights end without any significant head trauma at all (i.e. when they are won as a result of grappling)

I don't think it's any coincidence that MMA has yet to experience it's first fatality (fingers crossed) and you don't see the same "punch drunk syndrome" from repeated neurological trauma that you get in retired boxers.

Why wouldn't it be legal ? Its fantastically entertaining and the athletes are far more well behaved than in the likes of Boxing and Ice Hockey.

It's far less dangerous than some other sports. We may as well ban all martial arts so...

Just watched it now. Same ref who let Cain destroy Bigfoot Silva for far too long too.

Very late stoppage

Weidman looks the real deal. I would love to see him fight Silva for the belt, I think he would cause him real problems.

And indeed, what was the ref waiting for to stop the fecking fight?!

Oh and what about the James Te Huna vs Joey Beltran fight? How great did Te Huna look? That was easily fight of the night for me, the chin on Beltran... the guy can take some shots.

You'd be amazed at how quickly some fighters can recover from being knocked out and come back to win a fight. (remember Cheikh Congo against Pat Barry )

A fighter has to do everything in his power for the ref to stop the fight, whether the ref is competent enough to see it is not his fault imo.

I think Weidman will have to go through Bisping and then he will get his shot

Apparently Rashad Evans will drop down to middle weight. If he does he will get an instant shot at Anderson.

As for Beltran, he is basically a human punching bag.

Yea Weidman looks excellent. Completely dominated Munoz. I still can't get over that elbow, it's a thing of beauty it really is.

I liked that fight too but Beltran annoys me for some reason. He doesn't really have much skill except getting his shit knocked in and being able to take it.

Not at all. Its an excellent sport and it is quite rare to see finishes as violent as the gif on this thread.

As mentioned they are far more protected than boxers.

If you like boxing you should check it out. Im basically a bandwagon fan having only gotten into over the last 3 or 4 years but Ive become a huge fan.

Indeed, MMA is safer than boxing, partly because of the amount of submissions in MMA but also because of the size of the gloves. There have been a couple of fatalities in MMA though. I think that there was one in America last year.

One of boxings problems in this regard is irresponsible boxing commissions giving out licences. British boxing was reformed, in this regard, after a spate of incidents in the 1980's and we haven't had a death or very serious incident since. Edwin Valero was an interesting case in point, he suffered a serious brain injury after crashing his motorbike early in his career and as such he was unable to get licensed in America, his solution was to move to Japan where they are much more lax with their licensing laws, he boxed there and in countries like Mexico, after a few years of not dying he applied for a license in Texas (the most lax of all American boxing commissions) and got a license to fight, after not dying in Texas there was strong rumours that he would get licensed in Vegas with Bob Arum wanting to put him in with Manny Pacquiao. Correct me if I am wrong but he never should have been licensed anywhere after suffering such a trauma?

Yea I think a guy died in some small MMA promotion after he got spiked on his head and broke his neck. He was trying to get out of a chokehold and threw himself forward and the other guy's weight landed on him and his neck snapped.

Quick google reveals there's actually been a couple of fatalities from intracerebral bleeds (which is what usually kills boxers). No idea how the two sports compare when you factor in total number of fights.

This is the most recent one that I can think of in boxing.

I know that there are several 'incidents' in boxing every year, though most are in countries with lax licensing laws. It would be interesting to compare, for arguments sake, serious incidents for both sports in America only, ratio'd against number of fights.

I will watch in the morn. I cannot see Faber winning which I guess will mess up his supposed 3rd fight with Cruz

Its a tad concerning that there is a live tennis match on ESPN right now that is in just the 2nd set.

If this is a 5 set match we will miss a lot of the event.

Well that was rubbish.cthe pre lims and Riddle fight made me think it was gonna be great

Lombard was terrible.

The main event was OKish. Barau will take some stopping. I think he will beat Cruz

Shit main card. The Barao fight was OK, but the rest of the main fights were borefests. Barao beat Faber more convincingly and dominantly than Cruz did. And given that Faber also beat Cruz previously, I think Barao will be a very tough fight for Cruz. Still should be a great fight.

Can't believe the ref let Congo & Jordan hug each other against the cage for the full 15 mins. There are some shit refs in the UFC.

Problem with the refereeing is that they're licensed under the state athletic commissions. They work for other MMA organisations too, UFC is stuck with who the commission delegates to them for each fight.

Anybody think all these shows every week are starting to kill the UFC buzz a bit? Too much of a good thing is bad and all that

Dont think so? i didnt follow it from the start but i always look forward too it; wish it was more regular tbh!
