Why the hell did they not stack this card with real barn burners?

Ufc shoot themselves in the foot sometimes. Some odd finishes tonight so far.

Now to see whether it was one night or one man that destroyed Anderson Silva. I hope Chael can finish the job but if Silva wasnt making up excuses about his injury before, Sonnen could be in a world of hurt

Oh dear. Lucky that Sonnen slipped, but I didnt think he caught him in the head with the knee. Sonnen couldnt handle the strikes once he was down

Sonnen is done. Theres no where for him to go now in terms of huge fights.

Oh dear. Won't lie, the early finish disappointed me but am just looking forward to Sonnen opening his mouth again

Can't see Chael getting another title shot after this. He's 35, and would be 37 or 38 before another chance would be available. Silva can't have much time left either.

The beginning of the end

Happy with the result. I like watching strikers and people who actively try to finish fights in style, so I've always been a bit of a Silva fan.

I'd imagine the winner of Bispings next fight would get the next shot anyway. Sonnen would have to win a couple to be back in contention. But then, you never know with Dana White. If he thinks the trilogy fight would sell more he would set it up to the detriment of other candidates.

I suppose Chael wasn't as roided up for this fight as he was two years ago. He looked a bit more docile.

Silva is 37. A move is the right thing but will be surprised if he does. Could see one or two fights left for him.

Sonnen on the other hand should try and join WWE.

Silva needs to move up a weight division. Nobody interesting for him to fight now.

If he moved up he'd have to take on Jon Jones at some point though, wouldn't be worth it from his point of view. Only wrestlers have a chance with him really, and Sonnens arguably the best at mw, so he'll stay there and dominate the life out of it. I like Bisping (probably one out of the five who actually do, and the rest are related to him) but Silva would destroy him so bad it's not even funny. That's the type of match he'll have for a couple of fights most likely.

I am surprised that Silva was so gracious with him after the fight, doping in combat sports is dangerous. Typical American though, are there any American athletes that are not doping? I guess the American sporting mentality was summed up concisely by Tito Ortiz when he said 'if you are not cheating, you are not trying'.

Was always gonna be an anti climax.

Shame Somnen attempted that silly spinning back first as it had the makings of another war.

He'll be kicking himself today.

Silva should retire. He won't get any credit for beating a much smaller GSP and Jones has youth and size on his side. Although that would be a much more interesting fight I feel.

I want to see him fight Jon Jones. Pit the two best fighters in MMA together. That would be an even bigger fight than Sonnen v Silva II.

Jon Jones probably is the only fighter with a chance of beating Silva anyways. Both are similar styled fighters who have incredible reach and lethal knees.

Not sure if Jones is one weight class below or above Silva? Or are they in the same class now?

Just one.

Jones is a light heavyweight, Silva is one class below at middleweight.

It even says on Wikipedia that Silva was a light heavyweight at one point too. I hope he does move up a weight class to fight Jon Jones. Silva isn't getting any younger and beating Jon Jones might just give him the biggest payday of his career. It would probably be the last fight of his career too since he really would have nothing else to prove.

Personally think Jones would win, maybe because he has youth and motivation on his side, but you never know with Silva.

Glad that Silva won anyway, all that trash talking by Sonnen looks pretty silly now, he is an amazing grappler / wrestler and has balls of steel, but hasnt quite got the talent to back it up.

That knee took all the wind out of him, and after that he just couldnt recover.

I think Sonnen is brilliant. He hyped the fight much more than any other fighter has ever done. It was all talk for ratings and it worked.

I watched the post fight press conference and he was excellent, gracious in defeat.

For those who are saying Anderson should retire, he said he has plenty of fights left in him and will only retire when he cannot continue to fight at a level like he is now. He is 37, but it's not as if he seems to be getting any worse.

Glad Ortiz has retired. I was sick of his "I fought with all my heart" and "I helped build up this sport" speeches. He has been finished for years. The only reason I would want him to win is for sentimental reasons, but then I hear his self serving bullshit speeches and I remember why I dislike him so much. Forrest is a bit of a gobshite also.

Why would he bother? He's be a very small fighter in that division, and would probably lose a lot of his speed and agility with having to bulk up so much. He said last night he has absolutely no desire to fight Jon Jones.

There can be plenty of matches for him at middleweight. I'd watch Sonnen fight him again. I'd love to see him against Wanderlei. I'd also love to see him make mince meat of Bisping.

Stupid move by Sonnen. There was no need for a spinning backfist! Especially throwing so much power into it that he lost balance when he didn't connect!

Sonnen's coach has asked for a rematch due to Silva's cheating (greasing with vasoline, grabbing Sonnen's shorts, that he was holding to cage to get more power in the knee and that the knee itself was to the face and illegal).

Mental.

Did look as though it might have caught him in the head. Replays were a little inconclusive IMO.

Nah, it hit the chest, although his thigh may have caught the face, certainly not the knee though.

He could die in the ring and want a rematch.

It's completely the opposite to what Sonnen said in the press conference though.

He said his shorts were grabbed, but what goes around comes around, and he'll grab some other fighter's shorts sometimes.

He also said that he didn't care about the knee. Regardless of whether it was legal or not, he's an old school fighter who wants it to be legal. He didn't care about the knee.

The only way, and I mean only way Jones doesn't brutally stop Silva in the first, is if he gives him too much respect.

Silva, would have nothing for Jones. Jones could and would take him down at will and would absolutely crush him on the ground. Jones has some of the most brutal GnP ever, and due to his length it might just be the most difficult to stop.

My personal opinion, is that Silva is overrated. He has reigned in the weakest division in all of MMA. Just look at who he has fought since he came to the UFC, aside from Hendo and Sonnen, the rest of those guys are journeyman in any other division at best.

As for Hendo and Sonnen, Hendo is so in love with his right hand and his rugged chin that he will stand and wang with anyone, even when he has no business doing it.

For evidence of this look no further than round 2 vs Silva, and the Fedor fight. Silva lit him up, and Fedor had him hurt. The guy is a gunslinger and in these two cases he came up 1 and 1.

Sonnen is a fantastic wrestler, but he leaves much to be desired with his actual striking power.

Is that Silva's legacy? Really?

Jones has already smashed guys that in my opinion are way way way better than anyone at MW. Silva would NEVER go to LHW because he'd just be another guy in the mix. Silva is in that weird size range where he can comfortably fight at 185 or at 205.

The UFC hype machine has latched on, and they have pulled the wool over everyone's eyes. It's a case of big fish in a little pond with Silva. He SHOULD go to 205, not look for a matchup with GSP, a guy that would be a tiny 185'r.

It's too bad Sonnen got carried away, I would have liked to have seen him punch Silva in the mouth for another round or two before he self destructed!

Apparently Rashad wants to cut down to middleweight and fight Anderson.

I'd love this fight. I think it would be a great test for Silva to see how good he really is.

Rashad has the wrestling pedigree to test Silva's biggest weakness. He has the wrestling tools of Sonnen, the power (to some degree) of Hendo, but he doesn't have the quirks of those two guys that I feel derailed them.

He is smart enough (I think!) to not stand and trade with Silva. He has the concentration and composure Sonnen tends to lack.

Great fight, it needs to happen, it very well could be a defining fight for Silva.
