The MMA thread

Absolutely gutted by this. Late April to May is still shaping up to be an incredible period for fights but this has took alot of the lustre away. We've still got Rashad vs Jones, Cotto vs Mayweather, Cormier vs Barnett and a great undercard on what should have been the JDS vs Overeem card, but Overeem vs JDS was such an exciting fight.

Hugely impressive debut KO win for Siyar B. against Paulo Thiago. Should put him in the top contender bracket.

Yea was a nice knock out. Main event was a bit disappointing.

You can get 5/1 for Evans to beat Jones on Saturday, might be worth sticking a few quid on. 11/1 for Evans to win by decision.

Has anyone seen the Brian Stann clip on Fuel TV about the ambush in Iraq? How fecking powerful was that, that was a great piece of television right there.

So whos excited for tonights main event?

Hope Evans can test Jones, but i see a submission win for jones coming.

Can't wait for this, I think Rashad will win, he's lightning fast and has been working on his striking a lot.

Prelims were awful until this Thompson V Brown fight.

Both are gassed to shit right now but its been a great fight

Just watched the recording to free up space so I can record utd - villa later.

Disappointing. With jones and rashad you would expect a good fight, but the reach advantage just stifled Evans and turned it into a bit of a dull fight - by their standards.

Rest of the card pretty meh too, first UFC I've seen in a couple of months so was expecting more.

I set my alarm to wake up when I thought the Jones/Evans fight was going to be, and sure enough I turned on just as they were walking out.

Re Jones: Its going to take a special or lucky performance to beat him. Whoever does it is going to have to find a way to land some shots without getting a foot, knee, or elbow to the face. There's no one around that can do that right now.

Jones needs to go to HW soon. His reach is just too much for LHW.

Well Hendersons been confirmed as the next challenger. He won't have to worry too much about eating an elbow with his granite chin. I think he's tough enough to take whatever Jones can give and test Jones chin. Theres some power in those hands, Rashad didn't follow up enough when he caught Jones but Hendo swarms when he smells blood

I thought Rashad fought a decent fight. Unfortunately for him, he spent most of the night worrying about getting knocked out by an elbow or roundhouse kick to the head to actually make a viable effort to win the fight. Can't see anyone dealing with Jones' reach anytime soon.

Everyone is so scared shitless of Jones, nobody has done what they need to do to even test him.

Machida is the only guy in my opinion that has tried to implement his gameplan and try to win. Everyone else has basically sat back looked to land a haymaker and survive.

What I've seen from Jones in glimpses here and there is, if he is pressured, he pulls back straight and while it might not be panic, there is a lapse in his concentration.

This is interesting for two reasons. First, you never just pull back straight from a flurry it just puts you on the end of punches. Two, that he tends to turtle up and duck makes it even worse. So far he has gotten away with it due to his incredible length.

He is constantly improving and he may very well close this gap, but right now I can absolutely see someone who throws caution to the wind, who has the appropriate style, putting him out.

Hendo has the "I don't give a feck" mentality, but I don't know if he has the other tools. He certainly has one shot KO power, but he is the type of guy who won't chase a fight, he will sit on that one big shot.

Maybe the guy who has the tools and the mentality isn't in the division yet. At HW I think he'd beat a lot of guys, I also think he could get blasted quite easily. At LHW the problem is, Jones has not had to face a guy who got in his face, stayed in his face, and pressured him.

Rampage didn't do it. Shogun didn't do it. Rashad didn't do it. Machida isn't a pressure guy, but as I said before, Machida at least TRIED to fight his fight and not just survive.

I remember another guy with an aura of invincibility about him. Nobody thought he could lose till a dude who could take a punch, had nothing to lose, showed up in Tokyo and shocked the world.

Rory MacDonald is a monster. Hugely impressive destruction of Che Mills. He should be up for a title shot soon. Sooner or later he'll have to face his teammate GSP as well...

Jones v henderson will be a good fight but Jones will win easy enough.

The all heavy weight card has now been fully re shuffled now too. Still looks a really good event.

UFC on fox only available on UFC TV live although ESPN have it tomorrow night.

Starts in 5 mins and should be pretty good

Yeah I watched the a couple of them.

And 1st fight of the main card was pretty good. Lavar with 2 straight wins

Really was. Thought he was gone as soon as Palhares got hold of his foot.

He is making a run for the title now. Maybe one more win for a shot

Good card. Very impressed by Belcher and Diaz.

2 things.

Why the feck did Pat Barry jump out of a mount into a side mount? Ihni binni dimi diniwiny anitaime.

Palhares is an absolute monster on the ground as everyone knows but unless he adds some striking to his game he's gonna get found out again and again. MMA is not BJJ. That was a great fight. I was wincing as Blecher was fighting out of those leg lock attempts. Great win for him.

Holy shit. What a fight between the Korean Zombie and Dustin Poirier. I'd completely forgot there was an event on tonight but I was idly fecking about on the Internet and stumbled across it right before the main event started.

Did anyone watch the Strikeforce card on Saturday? Great event. I've been bumming up Cormier since I first saw him against Devon Cole but I wasn't expecting him to be THAT dominant against Josh Barnett. I never expected to see Barnett get ragdolled to the ground by a much smaller guy. Can't wait to see how Cormier gets on in the UFC. Feijao was brilliant too. Looked borderline psychotic at the weigh ins and came out like a man on a mission. Kyle never even had a chance to get going.

Couldn't find a torrent on Sunday morning that was not going to take all day. So I just watched some highlights on various websites instead.

Cormier looking good. I hope they don't through him straight into a title or number 1 contender fight.

Give him the likes of Struve and Hunt and see how he goes from there.

You can get some decent odds on Herman, Bigfoot and Mir this weekend against Nelson, Valesquez and Dos Santos respectively.

Surely one of them can pull off the upset.

I'm thinking Bigfoot by sub might be the one to go for @ 21-1 on Bodog.
