Gaming The Legend of Zelda | Earthquake: "It's actually ridiculously good, and keeps getting better." ★★★★★

That find the 10 monuments in Zora's Domain is an horrific quest...

I'm not 100% sure why I'm enjoying it so much - I think like a lot of Nintendo games, there's an intangible element which makes it great that isn't down to cutting edge graphics etc. Just loving it so far - as I say, I'm not sure why but wandering around the world is just magical - the game design is incredible.

This (the switch) won't go down in price until like next year right? My original plan was wait until maybe half way through the summer, maybe until the mario game comes out and then get zelda, mario and the switch all at once. Though I realized that it probably will stay at the same price. So I might just end up getting it in a month or so, when my current school semester is done and then I'll have loads of time for this. Just looks too good to miss out on.

It probably won't get a price drop for a few years. What we'll get instead is the switch bundled with a game or two at a reduced price.

Never played a Zelda game, but reading the reviews has me intrigued.

What kind of game would you compare it to? and I looked on Wiki, there are 18 of these things. Would they need to be played first to enjoy the game as a whole?

Definitely don't need to play other ones, they are all part of a timeline as such but also self contained so you won't be missing much at all if you haven't played others.

Thanks. I may give this a go at some point. In no rush as I'm not overly fussed with Nintendo consoles, but when the prices drop I may give it some thought

BOTW is currently £59.99 on Amazon. Do they raise the price while it's out of stock or something, as it was only 44-ish before.
Might be the wii u version that's 49.99, not seen a switch version that cheap

I wish this was on PS4. Don't think I'll ever buy a Nintendo console

I looked at the prices of Wii U and they still seem very expensive

Well ten days in and its been a bloody joy playing this masterpiece. Instant classic.

Uuuugh you guys.

I'm buying a switch.

Edit - bought Switch for £160 including Amex points and a code. Delivered April 1st.

How does someone go about playing previous Zelda games since N64 times? Are they emulated on a modern console?

The Wii U will play every Zelda game. Everything up to & including the N64 games are on the Virtual Console (a built in emulator) and the more recent ones you can buy on disk. A Wii U on eBay costs a bit over £100. Plus it has HD remasters of a couple of the older games.

If you're not interested in playing the latest Zelda game you could go for the original Wii, which plays every Zelda game except the most recent one. Ive seen them on eBay for £30 or so, but not sure if that includes controllers etc.

Or if you have a pretty solid PC you can emulate them. You'll need to think about controllers though, the control schemes don't lend themselves to being used on a Xbox or PS pad.

So how far is everyone into this? Is there a way to check your total play time?

Possible spoilers ahead. I want everyones checklist

My checklist

3 out of 4 Divine beasts. The order I did them in; Zora, Goran, Rito. About to start Gerrudo

58 Shrines done

15 hearts and one extra full stamina wheel

Only about 16 seeds, and I cant find the fecking maraca lad that takes them anymore. I met him initially and then in 2 stable areas. But he is gone. Apparently there are 900 seeds to collect in the game

Johnny's great!

What do you find annoying about him?

I do like Johnny, but I can only stomach so much

Nowhere near that. I've done about 20 shrines, on my way to do the first beast now, but I have got about 100 of those seed things.

I spend ridiculous amounts of time taking photos and cooking stuff, I also spend ages planning cool new ways to take out enemy camps.

Thanks for that! So the older ones are all emulated for free? Only thing stopping me getting the WiiU in that case would be that the Switch itself is tempting me as a future buy, but the quality of the dock has worried me a bit.

The Wii U IMO is a piece of shit

Get the switch and all the games will eventually be on it

Theyre not free, but they're pretty cheap. The N64 games are about £7 each, the SNES game is about £5 and the NES games are about £3. Or at least they were the last time I checked.

RE the Switch, what's the concern about the dock?

The dock is fine if you use it properly. I've had no issues at all, although I would say I was a little surprised at the bits inside being plastic, that's a flaw, they should at least have a rubber buffer.

And you can emulate them, yes, though you'll maybe not find the Gamecube/Wii ones working too well depending on your setup. And you can also use any control pad, there are ways to make them work perfectly well. Though if you wanted a new machines to play the best ones on, you could always go for a 3DS and play the Ocarina and Majora's remakes, they are immense and really show how great those two really were and still are, also all the previous Zeldas are on there. Though as said above, the Wii U will play all the newer ones including the latest, or the Wii will play every single Zelda game bar the latest.

-edit I am of course talking PC emulation above, but it is far easier to just pick up a Wii until you get a Switch.

There was a vid posted in the Switch thread I think showing it to be fairly cheaply made and had a habit of scratching the screen. It's weird really, not sure why they can't just have the option of a cable plugging in (maybe they do/will).

Cheers man, think the Wii then Switch is the best option if they're that cheap. Will have a gander on Amazon.

It actually works really well, though as I said above, you do need to at least be a little careful. It's odd they don't have a rubber strip, but you can just get something yourself or a screen protector worst case. I had some flat rubber protection strips lying around for something else, so I fitted them yesterday, but for over a week I've had no issues with using the dock and I have been switching it in and out loads since my Mrs also has Horizon on PS4 and her shitty machine can't switch it up ;)

You'll have great fun! Though again, like I say, the 3DS is a great option too. It won't play Windwaker, Twilight princess or Skyward sword, but the versions of Ocarina and Majora's on it are sublime remakes.
