Gaming The Legend of Zelda | Earthquake: "It's actually ridiculously good, and keeps getting better." ★★★★★

I’m in the middle of it. I definitely find it very easy to get lost in which is something I love in a game but there’s something missing for me to be a special experience. Will come back on full thoughts / conclusion once I completed it.

The fact it doesn't have a proper narrative and path. As a spectacle and achievement it's up there as one of the best of all time, the world is definitely the most consistent and well designed ever as everything works as it's supposed to and it's up to the player to use it. But as a "game" it lacks cohesion. And also dungeons.

It's very much a game that depends on the gamer and their imagination/desire to use the game for what it is. If you miss all the little magic touches and creativity, then it will drop some points there for sure. Which is why it's so odd how rabid people have got elsewhere when someone dares to claim it's not perfect.

Actually I love games that don’t define necessarily have a singular path or at least let you chart your way through the overarching objective. For me Outer Wilds (and it’s DLC) is one of the greatest games ever made - in my top 3 - and it just lets you experience the world, it’s systems and piece things together. But I think the difference is as you say that aside from the moment to moment little gameplay experiences that feel your own, there is a strong narrative thread to hook me in and grab me by the balls (even if it’s told in a non typical mode). That’s definitely one thing that feels missing in botw. Maybe also the combat seems just fine to me so far so isn’t making up for the narrative aspect (I don’t really bother with narrative in FS games but their gameplay is so darn good).

But like I said, I’ll draw a conclusion once I complete. I’m definitely really enjoying what it does offer as well - the freedom, the organic manner in which you engage with it etc

Ps read some of the posts from back in 2017 when this game came out. My main takeaway is that this @fcbforever fella is a total cnut

Not sure how I didn't hear about this. Links awakening style, only you play as Zelda. Seems like the took some tears of the kingdom ideas in terms of the crafting.

September 26 release date

I'm not a fan of the new style Zelda games so this looks awesome.

I still occasionally pick up Ocarina of Time and play that, plus A Link to the Past from the SNES (both available on Switch) - two of the greatest games of all time.

I was meaning to play Link to the Past but noticed there are two versions available on Switch - original from SNES era and a GBA remake. Which one is better?

As for Echoes of Wisdom, it’s a day 1 purchase for me as pretty much anything Nintendo made these days.

I don't think I've played the GBA version but definitely go for the SNES one mate, it's timeless.

That along with Ocarina are possibly my two favourite games of all times, along with the classic Mario ones from when I was much younger!

Link's Awakening on the Gameboy was also a great game and got entirely remastered and released on Switch, so I'd recommend that as well if you've not played it before.

Do the GBA version. Its almost identical but has a handful of quality of life features that you probably want (assuming the quality of both ports is the same).

Thanks. I actually have Link’s Awakening remake but haven’t got down to playing this yet!

GBA is slightly lower resolution I think but otherwise both run smoothly.

:drool::drool: Count me in! I’ve still got a backlog though. Right now playing oracle of seasons on the expansion pack and haven’t even touched BOTW or TOTK yet. I did also start Skyward Sword but it’s a piece of crap that I don’t care to ever go back to complete.

This should be getting more love from the "gamers" on here.

@Sarni I've not played them on emulators, but the AGB version has some QOL changes like @quadrant says. It's still up there as my second favourite Zelda game when I really sit and think about it properly. We have amazing stuff like MM, BOTW and all those that challenge us as gamers after (and plenty reject for various reasons), but all in all this game led us into the age of variation and exploration more than anything else. So enjoy.

I've started playing the SNES version on Switch emulator but seeing a second view that GBA seems better I might actually jump over to that. It's not like I've got far so far anyway.

I've preordered this one already, as well as M&L Brothership. Both are super appealing and nice to see Switch still getting creative, original games towards the end of its cycle.

Link to the past is probably my favourite Zelda game. Have replayed it Id say more than any other game

but also never tried the GBA version. I might check it out

So who has had a crack at Echoes of Wisdom? I pre-ordered it a few days before its release but I don’t wanna touch it until I finish Oracle of Seasons on the virtual GBC

I got it and started it, seems like a really fun little game, like a top-down Tears of the Kingdom.

It has really annoying and noticeable framerate stutters in some of the open areas, though.

It suffers from the same issue as all the other Zelda games in that it makes me want to play it all day and deeply resent anyone or anything that gets in my way.

Although I've found that the bit in the Gerudo desert has a note of unimaginative busy work to it. No challenge, just a lot of going backward and forward between locations to progress.

And I am absolutely hopeless at remembering all the controls and as a result constantly press the wrong button and run down the energy meter unnecessarily!

Didn’t the the remake of Link’s Awakening have the same issue from what I remember?

I found Link's Awakening was much worse for it than this one in my opinion

Really enjoying this game though, they havent got it perfect and I hope this isn't the future for their top down Zelda games but its a very enjoyable 1 off
