The F1 Thread 2014 Season

I'm a complete cynic and an athiest but you do wonder if greater forces are at play when people survive things like that.

Seems impossible to this untrained observer that he would.

Can't see him racing again to be honest. If he does regain consciousness and gets to 100% fitness I can't imagine how much courage and mental strength it would take to actually be able to race again. I'd be too scared to even get in a car probably.

the new track in Russia looks very impressive, just a shame this new race has been overshadowed by last week in Japan.
I hope Bianchi recovers and race again, hopefully an accident that will never happen again.

I think it just shows how incredibly dedicated to safety F1 has been. Helmets, cars etc all designed to give the greatest possible chance of survival. Constantly being reevaluated to improve safety

I am not sure I agree with the decision with Marussia to only run 1 car this weekend.

Sure it is absolutely tragic what happened to Bianchi, but the show must go on. Did Williams not run a car for weeks after Senna's death? I was too young to remember. Perhaps F1 recently has been desensitized to major accidents these days, but it wasn't long ago that it was a regular occurence in F1.

Either way I wish Bianchi a full recovery, but I think it's a bit silly to stop driving, it has happened and it cannot be undone. Surely the best way to honour him is by giving a great team performance.

I think you'll find Marussia wont have a choice, Ferrari have paid for that seat & i guess it's down to Ferrari to help make that call on who drives.

I dont think it is that, the car has been checked over by FIA, it has had all the checks every race car has. It is ready to race.
From what I heard on BBC this morning it is to show their support of Bianchi.

I'm sure the car is fine, i think the cash that Marussia get from Ferrari vs the cash they'll get from Rossi or another driver is greater. It also doesn't do them no harm from a PR perspective. Call me cynical but every F1 team will work out the numbers and i'm guessing Marussia will be better off by not running a second car this weekend.

Think Bottas would have been on pole if it wasn't for the last corner.

Not sure, Williams has been a bit slower in the last sector to the Mercedes. Think he could have split them at the minimum but he went for it all which is great to see.

It's only a Championship battle because of Hamilton's mechanical issues and a couple of quali errors, without those he would be walking it. Rosberg has only really beaten him a couple of times all season and one of those was Monaco.

Rosberg has made it interesting by being good in quali, in the race though Hamilton has him covered, he's just better at race craft, fuel saving and surprisingly tyre saving.

I hate being captain hindsight, but i have to recall this quote (bar Hungaroring's fire in qualy) :) :p

Really? Seriously?

Hungaroring, Spa, Monza, Singapore. 4 tracks where Hamilton is a stronger driver than Rosberg on. Less of the knee jerk reactions.

There was a mention today regarding the freeze on engine development coming to an end - when?

You think it would be in time to give us a more competitive end to the season or is it purely a next year thing? Heard there was an opportunity to redefine the spec of the engine for next year two.

Yes but at the time it was a huge point in the championship, Hamilton of old might have lost his head and the gap would have just become insurmountable. Have to give Hamilton a lot of credit this season, he's finally got on top of the mental game too but I guess you would expect that as he matured.

He's stepped up a notch for sure, Belgium helped significantly in the mental stakes.

In other news, Jolyon Palmer finally clinched the GP2 title today in Sochi, he's had an amazing year this year & been consistently up there every race. Whether anyone looks to get him in an F1 seat is anyones guess.

Yeah without doubt Rosberg hasn't quite had the same edge to him since Spa, even though he came out on top there.

Nice to see another Brit win the GP2 Championship, not sure if anyone has an opening for him in F1 next season unless he brings huge money. In other news the rumour is Ferrari are throwing money at Newey again, must be sick of turning them down at this point.

"Go till the end" do they really expect Nico to do 50+ laps on this set?

Wouldn't be surprised to see Rosberg still get a podium, he'll probably benefit from a safety car. Don't know why he braked so late when he already had the move pretty much done.

Rosberg might get into the top 3 towards the end of the race, but he'll get overtaken by multiple cars as his tyres turn to mush.

The BBC keep saying it's 25 seconds for a pit stop, looks more like 30 seconds based on Ricciardo's stop. So Rosberg's net third already. And if tyre deg isn't an issue (like they all seem to be saying), he should be able to keep Button et al behind him.

Edit: Scrap that, forgot that the pit entry cut out the last couple of corners.

Edit 2: Rosberg reporting degradation, so scrap the second bit as well.
