The F1 Thread 2014 Season

Just a matter of seeing if Rosbergs tyres last now, I suspect they will.

Williams threw that 2nd away by waiting too long to pit Bottas, soon as they came out behind Vettel they were struggling. Rosbergs pace is still good, unless they go off a cliff very quickly he will be fine.

Hamilton is just coasting out front, I don't know why they are even talking about Rosberg gaining time on him. Haven't seen Hamilton even attack a braking zone since about the 5th lap.

Christian Horner - "It would be nice to have a safety car"

Anyone else feel that comment is a bit insensitive after the recent incident?

Brundle calls it a sensational drive from Rosberg...........yeah, it really hasn't been. Not a bad drive by any means but sensational is overselling it a bit.

If he made that mistake on a track that didn't let the tyres last 50 laps with very little deg then he would have paid for it, he's very lucky in that respect.

Dullest race for a few years that. Good recovery from Nico, but he was lucky the tyres were the way they were.

With these new tracks why can't designers design an exciting one? Is it that difficult?

Doesn't help they keep using the same designer.

This is a horrendous track, its like they just throw away all the negative feedback from new tracks like Korea and Valencia and continue to build the same thing.

Note to Tilke, racing tracks neeed elevation changes.

Rosberg did well but boy that car is head and shoulders above the others.
Teams like Ferrari and Mclaren have a lot to answer for considering their resources. A dominant car is nothing new though. Also, the thawing of tension between the Mercedes drivers over the last month or so hasnt helped(blame Lewis's brilliance and Mercedes's reliability).

This track is actually quite nice. It isnt helped by the overly friendly surface which looks after tyres too well.

Certainly looks nice but apart from rosbergs 2 passes on corner 2 (ham/bot) I don't recall any excitement at all.

Thought this was starting at one so I missed most of it. Seemed to be a race without much incidents though, bar the Rosberg lock-up. It is impressive he effectively went the whole race on one set of tyres. Won't see that too often.

Not just elevation changes but a completely new direction on what they think constitutes a good place to overtake.

A long straight followed by a massive braking point for a tight turn in theory should do that but when they've put four/five/six corners before the straight that you can't get near the car in front it basically renders it all pointless and yet Tilke makes every track like that.

Especially bad when most of the corners are ninety degree off camber and therefore probably not even nice to drive let alone make it easier for the drivers to follow each other.

Tracks like Spa (my favourite) just have a natural ebb and flow to them in addition to the elevation changes. None of the new tracks do because they're all stop start.

Sadly though, a lot of it isn't Tilke's fault. The regulations stipulate just exactly what a corner needs to be and much like the regulations for everything else, they're far too restrictive.

I think it is very good track , plenty of places for some exciting driving , good corners , the problem today was the tryes were lasting to long, there is no way that Nico should of got 99% of the race on one set.
Now I am not saying we need rubber that lasts only a short time, just something that gives that race some excitement, planning pits and the chance of it going wrong is part of that.

It helps to have a car which is a couple of seconds a lap quicker than everyone else.

Big time.

I saw the start at my mates house but had to leave after 2 or 3 laps and said as I was leaving he'll still come 2nd.

Baring malfunction it was never in doubt.

Seems the softer compound lasted about half the race. So if they replace the harder (lasted a Ffull race) with the softest (third of a race?) you could be right. Guess we'll see next year.

Anyone see Alonso post-race interview? Seems he will not be in a car with a Mercedes engine next year. Pretty much nails him for the Mclaren seat I guess. Though has anyone mentioned him staying and RAI leaving?

It's sensational that tyres made by Pirelli lasted 51 laps, thats the only part that is. It wasn't like Rosberg overtook the whole field to get back to the front, he literally only had to overtake 2 Lotus's, 2 Caterhams and a Marussia, those in front then started pitting, he then he overtook Bottas who left the biggest wide open door you will ever see in F1.

I saw that live and didn't believe that I did see it, poor Alonso :(
