The F1 Thread 2014 Season

obviously the weather played a part but the track was just normal wet conditions at the time, the tractors have been an accident waiting to happen, brundle missed one by inches in 94 which probably would have killed him
I think a few drivers had said this was a bad corner so perhaps it should have been red flagged right away. There's been a lot of accidents waiting to happen over the years and this was one.

Watched the race and was confused about the crash and who was actually injured. Anyway, hope Bianchi will be alright.

Seeing reports that the earlier reports about him breathing unaided are potential BS. Unfortunately, I think this may be the case. So soon after a large surgery I doubt they take you off a ventilator. Fingers crossed.

There is amateur footage of the Bianchi crash on the Formula 1 sub-reddit if anyone has morbid curiosity... It looks like an awful hit. (Thankfully, it's too far out to see any actual detail of the impact on Bianchi himself)

I watched it. Actually a miracle no track marshalls got hit either, but that impact is sickening.

An impact like that to the brain is never good. Especially if he's had to have surgery.

There could be serious long term implications for him sadly.

You got a link? Just had a quick look but can't find it and I'm curious to see how it happened.

FOM have already removed the full video, but here's a GIF of it:

In all seriousness, I'm surprised he has a head left. Reminds me why they introduced those bars on the back of lorry trailers - to stop cars going under the back of them and the back hitting them at head height, often decapitating the driver.

Very sad and hope he pulls through.

Thats insane. The velocity is enough to lift the tractor up and his head seems like the point of impact. Amazed is alive.

The amount that crane moves is horrifying.

How unlucky is that. Having watched the video, if the stewards had been busy loading Sutil's car and the crane not actually reversed,he might have got away fine. Such an horrific crash.

Any of those Marshal's could have easily been killed, either by the car itself, or the masses of debris. Lucky guys.

There's chat on the Sub-reddit that the force which pushed the JCB up may have saved Bianchi, because as a result, it wasn't a completely direct hit (to his head), and means he wasnt killed instantly. All conjecture though.

 Wow at the amount that crane moves. Jesus. The speed of it was crazy. He's a lucky boy. Fecking hell. Those marshals too. Strange lack of official updates.

From the dent on the side of his helmet he must have turned his head sideways slightly, how his head didn't come off I'll never know, hideous stuff

I remember thinking the same when massa hit that spring

It's going to be interesting how this incident changes the sport, I think its a great credit to F1 that when something bad happens they instantly throw money at researching prevention and safety schemes. The zylon strip above the drivers visor was a direct consequence of Massa's incident in 2009 and supposedly saved Max Chilton from serious injury from debris last year.

My initial thoughts are that any cranes would be sat behind barriers and jcbs would be retrofitted with impact protection such as external airbags.???
Should a crane have to go onto the circuit they could use modified ipv's (impact protection vehicles which are standard on uk motorway works now) to flank the crane?

Could go a few different ways, I think they will immediately start being cautious on recovering cars under yellows, safety car will probably get called more often the rest of this season.

But yeah I think they will modify the recovery vehicles, they might even feel the need to build new specialist vehicles for it.

I suspect any future Tractor movement into an 'active' area not behind the barrier will now wait upon Race Control and Race Director approval, or at least until the end of the season, when more thought and planning can be put into solving this issue.

That is an awful video - until seeing it, it's difficult to imagine the actual speed and force of the impact. For an F1 car (what do they weigh - 700kg?) to move a crane vehicle weighing at least ten times as much is shocking to see.

"Jules remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the Mie General Medical Centre in Yokkaichi. He has suffered a diffuse axonal injury [when the head is rapidly accelerated or decelerated] and is in a critical but stable condition," the family said.

Part of a statement released by his family.

According to wiki:

Diffuse axonal injury (DAI) is one of the most common and devastating types of traumatic brain injury,[1] meaning that damage occurs over a more widespread area than in focal brain injury. DAI, which refers to extensive lesions in white matter tracts, is one of the major causes of unconsciousness andpersistent vegetative state after head trauma.[2] It occurs in about half of all cases of severe head trauma.

The outcome is frequently coma, with over 90% of patients with severe DAI never regaining consciousness.[2] Those who do wake up often remain significantly impaired.[3]

Could be like Schumacher :(

Someone mentioned that that Richard Hammond had a similar injury. Although I don't know how true that is.

There was some positive news on the Schumacher front today, and Hammond has more a less made a full recovery (I say more a less, as what we see on TV is a lot less to what his family see, and he may be different at home etc). But it shows that with these terrible accidents, recovery is more than possible!
