He was my first choice if Rivaldo got T-boled. However with Rivaldo still in the team and you having a lot to spend decided not to pursue.

:D If its any consolation I ideally wanted to get an extra full back in as cover but that went out the window when you got your bid in for Simonsen with two minutes to spare!

If I'm thinking of the same one I'd actually typed out a bid for him but opted for Schiaffino instead. I'm surprised Finney lasted so long before Chester nominated him. His quality all across the frontline would have been ideal for us going forward but I'm not sure he would have been clear fit for our planned formation/system.

Probably the same player. You could have potentially gotten the other for 7m less!
 
I really struggle with all these old players. How much research you all must put into this is amazing!

You learn by playing drafts :)
I also love to take one player per draft that i dont know much and then do a full research on him and for the rest of the team just go with players im familiar.

At some point you'll wake up in the middle of the night thinking if it's okay to play some obscure left-footed defender from the 40's on the right side of a central pairing - and at that point you'd realize that you would've been better off just reading a book or something

Like Sjor says, you learn just by sticking around these threads for long enough, and piggy-backing off of the research of others I guess. The really satisfying thing is properly researching a player, watching old matches they played in etc. Its time-consuming and I do it nowhere near as much as I always intend to, but its nice feeling that you aren't BSing your way through everything, or at least not bullshitting quite as much as usual :smirk:. The downside is when you research a player, provide GIFs and try to sell him well, and he gets absolutely zero credit. Especially when he then mysteriously starts popping up in drafts straight afterwards and suddenly people reckon he's pretty good*.

* Still bitter about Rosato and a few others :)

He isn't a clear fit for me either, as it stands - but if I go through I may conceivably change things around considerably. I may end up benching several players who would have been nailed-on starters in another system.

I considered a small group of, say, attackers in a broader sense (from outright strikers to offensive midfielders) - including Del Piero, Greaves (who I landed in the end) and Schiaffino. Kempes too, for that matter - was in that group. Cubillas too, I suppose, but I considered him in a slightly different category (considered as a fit in my particular system). But there were at least a couple of others who, quality wise, are easily on that level. None of them have been nominated. Your man should be one of them - probably the same guy Pat was on about too.

That's the upside to not going quite as bat-shit crazy over Cabrini as I did :lol:
 
We can probably speed up the auction phase by just awarding the players to managers on whom there is no further contention and no need to wait for full 12 hours ?
I just want the drafting to end so we can all post "unpicked XI" and "disgusted how he is not picked" player lists. Oh and the draw, lets do the draw !!

In retrospect I'm glad I didn't out-crazy you there. Not that Cabrini wasn't worth it - I still think he would've been ideal for my particular plan (which was always about having multiple options, system wise), and I would've worked around having a tighter budget. But having that extra cash in the old warchest has made it smoother, all things said and done.

@Pat_Mustard Seeing Olsen in that list made me think of his compatriot of the same name - a player who would never get picked in this context, but who is nevertheless interesting in his own way: I'd like a draft at some point where the likes of him are featured - that level of player, if you catch my drift. Good players - not great, but good. Building solid teams - not star studded teams, but good teams. See the thing?

But it's hard to come up with a theme which would make it natural to draft from that pool - you'd have to block a whole shitload of players, or operate with criteria which somehow filter said players out.
