With my pick, I select Careca - the striker who would have started for Brazil in 1982 if not for a sad late injury. Later he would form part of the legendary attacking trio Ma-Gi-Ca with Maradona and Giordano leading Napoli to their greatest period in club history. This Italian reporter believes "With Careca, rather than the cumbersome [redacted], in the vanguard, Brazil would surely have won the World Cup in 1982. But Careca was injured shortly before the tournament and could only watch as his replacement failed to convert the approach work of Socrates, Zico and Falcao into goals."

Offering the pace, technical skill, tactical intelligence and creating the space and movement for teammates that was lacking from the CF position in 1982, Careca completes my attacking trio the way it should have been in 1982.

Great pick. Always cringe when I hear people say Maradona had to do everything at Napoli.

Thanks (and thanks to the other comments I couldn't reply to). Yeah, I think its just people that never watched or knew much about Serie A at that time that are just googling line ups without watching matches or researching. Thankfully, most people in this thread tend to have a broader perspective on the game than the average twitter 'fan' (who don't even seem like true fans of the game to me).

There are some really obscure players on here but it should be good reading up on some of them. What sites do most of you use to do the research though. Typing there name into Google usually returns sweet fa

This isn't the easiest to search but its got a lot of awesome photos over the decades and little facts, trivia and data that is fun to just browse and randomly save good stuff or information.

I think I will complement 3 jogo bonito palyers with 3 el ballet azul players from Universidad de Chile. El Ballet Azul of Chile was the name given the U's dominant side of the 1960s that played attractive football. I can imagine this team complementing their later Brazilians very nicely. Leonel Sanchez had the rocket left foot, Eyzaguirre controlled the right flank and Ruben Marcos 'The Seven Lung' was the midfield engine capable of obstructing the opponents offense all game while also contributing to attack when needed.Unlike his two U teammates, Marcos was not a part of Chile's 3rd place World Cup squad in 1962. But in 1966 he scored Chile's only goals of the tournament, one against a powerful Soviet team showcasing his all around skills.

Some really good teams starting to take shape now, the Pool 2 rule is keeping everyone honest though, hopefully it will be 16 very evenly balanced teams by the end of it.

Really enjoying this draft so far. Lots of names I've never seen drafted before. The pool 2 requirement is quite balanced aswell. With only 3 needed I think the teams would be overly strong and 5 would maybe be pushing it abit.

Surely deco comes under Portugal?

I'm happy to go with it but it opens a can of worms regarding which players are eligible.
