Ten Hag sacked | Ruud appointed Interim Manager

I have a funny feeling he will move to another club and succeed, when he came in he seemed to be the right kind of manager we needed to steer the ship in the right direction, but the football has been terrible and i lost faith when he said he couldn't apply the same style of football at United that he did at Ajax..

This has come very late but I worry that whoever comes in will be tested with the present squad. Can’t see how anyone can get the squad firing together but hope to God that someone will. This decision should have been made after the FA Cup but for some reason the board and in particular the big boss (Mr INEOS) should shoulder the blame. Football is nothing like running a Chemical Industry and I think we need, somehow, have to get rid of Glazers and INEOS before we make real progress. Cannot even guess who is going to come in and take over but they had better be good. I personally would like someone with knowledge of the PL and with a strong personality, he’ll need it.

Nah that was LVG.
LVG had us in 4th and then 5th. Never lower than that.

I judge Manchester United on League and Major European success. We are not a cup team, or a cup club.

Well, we are now. We have the expectations of a cup team if we think Ten Hag did a better job than all managers bar Jose.

Lord no. Don't even mention that name.
Having said that, he's still better than Hag which says a lot.
He really isn't. His record at club level is atrocious and his "success" at England was in spite of him not because of him. He bottled the Euros in 2021. It was on a plate against a poor Italian team by Italian standards and he bottled it. Pulled a Homer too this year as well. Was minutes from Slovakia knocking them out and then went all the way to penalties against Switzerland

I genuinely liked him a lot and don't think he was given a platform to succeed on the whole, but it's the right decision. Good luck to him in his future endeavours!

Curious to see who we get as full time coach (and how long the interim will last).
I liked him a lot too but I think he should have done much better

Well, according to stories this morning from Madrid, Ancelotti is about to get the bullet..........

Rashford survives another manager.
Rashford, Bruno, Maguire, Lindelof, Shaw... it's time to move all of these failed players on. Apart from the fact that they're probably past their peaks and only getting worse from here, they probably all have PTSD from multiple embarrassing defeats.

Not going to gloat over ETH lising his job, but it's was long overdue and should have happened in summer. I believe we have a good enough squad for top 4 and with a manager with a well-defined modern way playing, we can achieve something more.

I really wanted it to work.

But those midfield tactics dating back to last year were so terrible. He had to go.

Sticking with Rashford and Bruno, two significantly flawed players, did him in.

His recruitment from day 1 was horrific.

Ten Hag completely overlooked physicality and intensity. That showed me that he's stuck in a Dutch league mentality.

How can a Dutch manager not setup a midfield to control a game against inferior opponents? Absolutely baffling.

I started to get nervous when he spouted that he wanted to be "the best transition team in the world".

Shambolic that Ineos bottled the decision to do this after last season and allowed Ten Hag to torpedo yet another season

Thank for your service Erik, but this was clearly overdue. It was clear ETH didn't have the know how to build a consistent winner. His additions to the squad will cost us dearly in years to come

It was inevitable, but still feels like a bit of a shocker. Thanks for the two trophies Erik. I'll always remember the FA cup run with great fondness.

Can't be too many managers who have won 2 trophies in 2 years but it very clearly still being the obvious decision to sack them!

Oh, you poor poor people. You haven't yet realised that none of this is real.

You're in a dream. You're going to wake up any moment to your freezing cold homes, dirty dishes still sitting in murky cold water and an athletic article notifying you that Erik has the full backing of the board.

Probably the shock because it's unusually early for us to remove a manager. We usually wait until the season is an absolute bust.
Although you could say we've waited 6months too long anyway.

With the league champions.

The team that won the league weeks prior to him taking over. With players who'd feature in all-time United XIs posted on here with little to no argument.
Lots of them were finished though. Visit, Rio, Evra, Carrick, Nani, RvP, Giggs were all finished players, and Rooney also near that.

I am not saying that Moyes wasn’t terrible, he most definitely was and I was probably the most anti-Moyes poster on this forum. He was shit and should have never been appointed. But on the other hand, he also was sacked quickly, didn’t have many signings and didn’t do near as much damage as EtH.

Absolutely did not expect this today. It was much more convenient to do it in the last break. I guess someone (named Jim) got really fed up. As a positive, it was again kept under wraps and the press had no idea.

Oh wow there it is. Nobody can say this hadn't been coming. I'm a little surprised it happened right now and not at the previous international window, or the next. The last few games just feel wasted as a result, but they made the decision in the end I suppose.

Shame it didn't work out. I like Ten Hag but he just couldn't make it work. I really did think we would progress this season without a crazy amount of injuries we experienced last year, but clearly that faith was misplaced. I would still make that same decision in the summer every time though, but clearly in hindsight that was a mistake.

I don't think he has helped himself with some of statements in the media recently, they appeared so out of touch with what everyone was seeing on the pitch and ultimately you will lose a lot of people that way.

Cheers for the trophies and I wish him well for the future. Will be interesting to see where his career goes next.

(thankfully this happened on a day off from work, as I'll be deep in these threads reading reactions!)

Same old story really. Now they will spend another 200 million on players and back a manager and sack him after 2 years. And then again... this club...
Clubs sack underperforming managers. That's how football works.

He really isn't. His record at club level is atrocious and his "success" at England was in spite of him not because of him. He bottled the Euros in 2021. Couldn’t by the same argument be said ‘that the two cups we won were in spite of EtH not because of him’?

Nevertheless, Southgate is not a good manager for United. He might be better than EtH, heck Fred the red might be too, but we should stay away.

So what happens if Ruud starts showing good progress with the team, pattern of play, improve players, and takes us into Top 4? Do we make it permanent?

Flick, Conte, Motta, Slot and Maresca this year.

Emery, Iraola, Hoeness, Hutter last year.

When it clicks, it clicks.

Manager changes can very much be a positive change for a struggling club. Often, good vision & tactics are made visible in a short time.

Deligted about this. At the same time he was the manager that I really wanted back then, so have no idea/wish on who to replace him. Atleast I won't have too high expectations for the new manager.

Still befuddled at what happened. We were very good till that Carabao cup win. Those matches vs Barcelona had some of the best football I’ve seen us play in Europe. It’s all been downhill after that, one step forward, two steps back.

Thanks for the cup wins Erik and wish you the best, but think this was the right decision.

I think there are a few too many posts suggesting that if Erik can`t make it work here no one can. We are forever doomed to be a midtable team…
There is a decent chance that Erik was actually not all that, despite a good run in the CL with Ajax.
There is a decent chance he was not a very good fit for us.

There are very few managers in the world that are good enough to take us back to the very top again and keep us there. If any? That is probably too much to ask for.

But a manager that can get us into top 4 for a couple of seasons should not be too much to wish for.
Even Ole managed it with a squad no better than this.
Hopefully the new regime can improve us as a club and give future managers better foundations to succeed.

Finally. This is a result-oriented business and everything has been just going downhill. Better late than never though. Happy day!
