Their pride in each proving they are better than the other would definitely mean they would play better. Having rivalries in teams isn't always a bad thing and can spur you on to greater things. This notion that they hated each other isn't totally correct either. They both have since admitted an admiration for each other and how they drove each other on. Now they get to do it at close quarters.

Meh. It's not the Cristiano's complex when he can't bear anyone being better or even as good as him near. Keane and Vieira never tolerated laziness or low morale, they'd have no problem with each other.

I don't think it is fair to Vieira and Keane to think they need some external reasons to be motivated and inspired. Both of them were masters of it and if anything their inspiration would rather affect the other players who do need someone to motivate them. Their biggest strength isn't really highlighted in a knock-out tournament with only big games like this, especially as we sort of always assume the peak of every player(which nearly always is when the player was at his mental peak as well), but in a league run they'd inspire the team to greatness.
