The agreement was that Swansea could sell if it was in the best interests of the club to do so. They obviously thought £15 million for Joe Allen was good business & were quite happy to take the money.

Taken from the BBC at the time:

Although the new Liverpool manager has a written agreement with Swansea not to return to his former club to try to sign any of their players for the next 12 months, the Welsh club can waive that clause if a deal is deemed to be in the best interests of the club.

It would seem the best interests of the club were to get rid of the player who was now unsettled and unhappy because his former manager had come in for him despite his promise not to.

In that case why have the caveat of selling if 'it's in the best interest of the club' ?

I think Jenkins knew full well that Rodgers would be after the likes of Allen. By putting that clause in he knew he could squeeze a few more bob out of the deal.

You forgot humbleness.

They would never tell anyone about how dignified, classy and stylish they are. Neither would they ever go on about how they have the best fans in the world.

You seem to know a lot about the deal, obviously the expert on player contracts.

Because I've really reached with his contract there haven't I? Not even a mention of the silly clause.

-Swansea say they have a gentlemen's agreement not to sell unless it's in their best interest
-Rodgers bids anyway
-Players gets unsettled and unhappy
-It's suddenly in their best interests to sell because of that

God, what insane conjecture. Absolute lunacy. Call the gards.

They chose to sell because the financial package suited their situation.
If Swansea aren't kicking off about it, why the heck are people on here?
Lunacy indeed.

We're just pointing out that you're all full of shit to claim some moral superiority over other clubs. Simples.

Have I missed something? Did Brendan take the ultimate piss of adding a single pound? That would have been Arsenal classy.

One of the greatest failed bids ever made which provoked one of the greatest responses..."stick it up your Arse"

There are lots of people out there who feel that Wenger, & Arsenal, are not only wrong, but they're out of their tree for even considering making Luis Suarez an Arsenal player. This has nothing to do with the bidding process, because as it stands, the bloke is not up for sale. So why have Arsenal even made an offer ? Has anyone at Anfield come out & said he's on the market ? Sure, every player has his price, & Rodgers has publicly stated that until someone comes up with an offer that falls in line with what he feels he's worth, then he's going nowhere. So tell me, considering that Luis Suarez is still a Liverpool player, & is tied to another 3 years at the club. Also taking into account the manager, & the owners, have clearly stated that not only is he not for sale, but they would not even consider selling him to Arsenal. What exactly have Liverpool done wrong ? You make it sound like Liverpool & Arsenal are in some sort of negotiations, & that your wonderful manager is doing everything by the book, especially by bidding a pound over forty million. Liverpool going public on this is a subtle way of telling Arsenal to politely 'feck off'

A player doesn't have to be officially listed for a club to make a bid for him. For example, you can offer to buy someone's house without them putting it up for sale, it's up to them whether your offer meets their valuation and they want to sell. There is nothing underhanded about that at all.

A quid doesn't get you much these days but Wenger managed to send your club into turmoil for a hundred pence.

Not really , bid was refused. The Arse thought the clause would be triggered, they were wrong and obviously badly advised.
In our eyes they are the fools.

Suarez is exactly the type of player who puts his head down and plays, when has he ever huffed or seemed disinterested? Compare Suarez's few months before he wanted to leave and Torres- which one sulked around a pitch and which one gave it all?

None of his previous situations were examples when Suarez was upset with his club.

Now he will be.

I still say the same thing. He's not the type to put down his head and play when he has problems with a club. The fact that you can look at that man's history and delude yourself into believing he won't be a problem is delightful.

Rodgers is such a tit.

Where were these values, dignity, respect, humility and standards when Suarez was racially abusing opponents, refusing handshakes, repeatedly cheating and assaulting opponents?

Of course the fans lap it up and think he's playing a blinder when it just looks like empty platitudes to keep them happy before an eventual sale. The club is a joke. The manager, the owners, the MD and the fans.

Let the shit-storm commence.

Brendan has been brilliant, said the right things. Long may it continue.

They're merely platitudes to keep the dim and impressionable fans happy.

His whole dignity and values shtick is fecking cringeworthy considering he's been at the club 5 minutes and was happy to blow smoke up Suarez's arse all season despite being fully aware he's a racist little scumbag.

Funny how this thread has gone from Suarez leaving Liverpool, to let's have a pop at nasty LFC, just because his departure isn't as cut & dried as many had thought, or hoped.

I think this is better than anyone could have hoped.

ah right okay. Personally don't get that wound up about other teams business. Just support my team, it's just a game of football. That's all, if that makes me dim so be it.

Exactly my thinking too.
I can't believe how people get so worked up about LFC. Some people need to chill a little.
....Visions of really wound up and angry people typing away.

Yeah that's why you're on a Manchester United forum.

 Angry? Why would anyone be angry?

I think you'll find everyone in this thread bar the Liverpool fans are keeping themselves quite entertained. Your posts just make it even better.

Why would this situation make us angry? Not sure you'll find many United fans who aren't pissing themselves laughing at Suarez taking a massive shit on you and your fans now finally having to accept what a shitbag he is.

This is exactly what we all predicted and wanted to see.

The messier and more drawn out the better. Your manager making a fool of himself by getting all teary eyed and wistful just adds to it. It's popcorn entertainment.

Probably gave the little scumbag a false sense of security too. For all his platitudes & blowing smoke up people's arses, Rodgers has shown he's no mug or soft touch. That's how most Liverpool fans view him right now.

Except that's exactly what he is, a mug and soft touch, who licked Suarez's arse all season in the vain hope of keeping him.

Now the exit looks inevitable, he plays to his audience with a melodramatic 'Liverpool Way' spiel that any RAWK parody writer on here could come up with.

And you all fall for it hook line and sinker. And we laugh.

Not really the best certificate out there, is it? Especially after the Garra Charrua histrionics.

So what if he doesn't go, but makes an apology & knuckles down in doing the business for us next season. I suppose in your eyes Rodgers will still be a mug & a soft touch for keeping hold of such a disruptive & disrespectful individual.

Oh that would be hilarious, too. We'll start a sweepstakes as to when Suarez will do another Suarez on the field and get himself banned for 10 games. He's the gift that keeps on giving. And so are you, come to think of it.

If he does apologies what will the majority of Liverpool fans think? I mean they have stood by him through all his shit but with him turning on he club they must have started to realise the type of scumbag he is.

Good player, nobody can deny that but he's by far the biggest cnut I've ever seen play the game, he's on a completely different level.

Got an excuse for everything you lot have.

‘Swansea City can confirm that Liverpool have expressed an interest in Joe Allen, despite a written agreement with Liverpool not to approach any players within the 12-month period of former manager Brendan Rodgers leaving for Anfield.

‘There has also been interest from other clubs regarding his possible availability and the club is due to speak to Joe, as originally planned, about the situation when he returns from GB duty.’

‘The club is not prepared to release any details on whether any formal bids have been made at this stage or details of Joe’s contract, which are private and confidential. The club is extremely disappointed that speculation regarding certain aspects of his contract have been released to the media by parties outside the club.

Rodgers and Liverpool going back on their word, with all their history and tradition you would think they'd know better.
