Steven Gerrard

Say if he went to Chelsea back then do you think a midfield trio of Makelele-Gerrard-Lampard could have worked any better than the one with Essien? Or would the Lampard-Gerrard conundrum resume on the club stage even with the presence of a holding midfielder alongside them?

Just think Essien was a better fit in that midfield and might even have been a better one than Chelsea buying Gerrard and putting him in their midfield.

At that time Gerrard's best form came on the right so they probably could have incorporated him without upsetting that midfield.

Yep, with a proper holding midfielder in the side I think Mourinho would have gotten the best out of both. Sadly with Essien it was a case of what could have been, injuries finished him well before he even turned 30.

Gerrard could have made the change like Ashley Cole did and been better for it, was young enough to do it without being seen as an absoloute c*** at the club too.

If you missed the game and only heard BT Sport you'd think he had a blinder today, baffling.

I've seen a few journos on twitter praising his performance too. Thought he was just as bad as the rest of the team to be honest. Bar maybe Johnson who was his usual poor.

Aye. I was shocked at the praise they lavished on him at full time. He attempted far too many stupid passes and wasn't great at all.

Maybe this should be in the Unpopular Opinions Thread but doesn't anyone else have the sneaking sense that Steven Gerrard is a really decent person? Based on nearly everything thats been seen and heard from him over the years, I'd be surprised if he isn't. And now, given the way his career is tailing off into an accretion of personal onfield failures theres a poignancy, a crumpled Merseyside Ellessed-shirtness about him.
Decent people don't punch a jd for not playing phil colins....or listen to phil colins

If Liverpool don't offer him a new contract maybe he'll get to see out his career at his boyhood club, they'll probably need to replace Barry next year.

Just over 6 months on from that slip, I want to take a moment and really, truely thank Steven Gerrard for that slip and stopping Liverpool from winning the PL title. They sure as shit ain't winning it this year.

That's why it was so great. It was the best chance they had of winning the league in a quarter of a century, that was their chance. Even moreso than in 2009, and they blew it. The stars aligned for them and they blew it.

He has slipped like 5 times since 'the slip', whats wrong with him?
Slippofrenia - the phenomen of randomly slipping, when you must not slip. It is often associated with starfish diving, hitting other people on the pub and talking bullshit.

Not a great performance yesterday, but due to the rest of the team being so poor he looked the best of a bad bunch.

A few dangerous balls and crosses, which is expected from a player who attempts them so often.

He really needs to pick the moments when to attempt his trademark Hollywood pass, gifting the opposition possession so easily will come back to haunt you in the Premier League and especially the CL.

He'll get offered a new contract, but also I wouldn't be surprised if Chelsea and City offer him one too, let's see how 'loyal' he really is.

Is this for real? Why would he want to buy a player coming towards the end of his physical powers?? Doesn't make sense.

You're assuming he means for City.... Depending how this week goes for them, he could be talking about bringing him to Bolton or somewhere.

Stevie Me could jump to City and have a chance to get that league title he craves

:nervous:

But wouldn't it be funny if he left and then the scousers won it?

Liverpool winning the title would be tragic.

Rodgers also had something to say on the subject.

I had a meeting with Steven's representative explaining the situation. I very much want him to be a part of what we are doing here

Like everybody else, Gerrard's probably still trying to figure out what that is.

Brendan Rodgers has admitted he's ready to rest Steven Gerrard for Liverpool's game against Real Madrid.

Made me laugh on Football Weekly how they were saying how Balotelli gets criticised for everything but whenever Gerrard does anything commentators praise him about what an example he is

Good decision. Prioritise the Chelsea game. There isn't a pair of games I'd rather win this season than the Chelsea ones. I hope we win and Rodgers runs down the touchline dancing and doing Mourinho's twattish knee slide.

You realize that's probably not going to happen though, right?
