Steven Gerrard

Only children and the brainless masses think Gerrard was a top, top player. Fantastic athlete, yes, but utterly brainless as a CM.

I hope you're right. I can't remember the game now, but a few years ago Scholes did something similar to Gerrard today. He cost us a goal at a vital point in the league but didn't let it affect him and went on to effectively dictate the game and we turned it around to win.

He's better than Scholes was.

BarneyLFC that is like saying Chuck Norris (Gerrard) was better than Bruce Lee (Scholes)! I get it you are a Liverpool fan but wake the feck up! Not even close mate you are better arguing who was better Gerrard Wilkins or Lampard. Then arguing who was better Keane Souness or Robson. Then finishing with Scholes Gazza or Hoddle.

Scholes didn't let anything effect the flow of his game, he also certainly didn't make cringeworthy team speeches just to get in the newspaper either.

Ha yeah. Basically he's the anti-Gerrard. No limelight, no free-kicks or penalty duty to bump up his stats and steal headlines. Never a need to build the side around him so he could shine brighter than others. He always put the team first and won the trophies. That was enough for Scholesy.

I can't take opinions on Gerrard seriously anymore, because he's getting the same treatment Scott Parker did before the Euros. I mean, how the feck can you "deserve" to win something, when there's nothing to stop you from just going and winning it, and yet you haven't yet?

Maybe at the next Olympics, Usain Bolt should just stand at the starting line and wait for the gold metal to run up the track to him?

Without a shadow of doubt it was so he could be in the box, potentially score and be the hero. The man. Today was possibly the most selfish display I've seen from a captain. Kind of the complete opposite of Keane's performance in Turin.
Coutinho was taking them in the first half too if I remember right.

Best post I've seen on Gerrard in ages. Frustrating how everyone says he "deserves" it.

Did Scholes in his entire career ever have a game where his team desperately needed a goal, and he kept selfishly taking shots from 30-40 yards because he'd lost his head? Until he got to about 34 he didn't seem to ever have a bad game full stop.

I think that sums up the difference between Gerrard and Scholes pretty well to be honest. Gerrard is better at grabbing attention but mostly because he's always trying to grab it...like today, or against City. He's a showman, Scholes was just a footballer.

All the arguments about who's better fall into irrelevance really. Scholes was every week one of the best 2-3 players for probably the most consistently succesful team on the planet, for over 10 years. People can claim Gerrard's better all they want, and lots of people will, but this fact will always be sitting there staring them in the face, not giving a shit about Steven Gerrard.

Far too sensible and serious a post, noodle.

Was he? I can't remember tbh but Gerrard's second half performance reeked of personal glory. They've scored many goals from his superb deliveries so for him to stop in order to be in the box was crazy.

Yeah, I remember being surprised by it myself.
