Television Star Trek

Best Trek I've seen or maybe I'm just hungover from Enterprise which is probably the worst. Every episode is movie like, just as GoT is. Quite a dark episode, a hint of Alien to it. Lot of mysteries and new science to it as well. Will enjoy this series.

Definitely enjoying this so far. Not sure on the lead, but there are some interesting characters, and the episodes have been well paced, and shot. I thought the CGI was pretty decent myself. Not sure it can be described as cartoonish. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Last episode was quality. Not a very Trekkie feel to it, but very good as a sci-fi.

Wish they had put it in another timeline and quadrant though.

^Its time they explored another galaxy. But that can only be done if the timeline is post-voyager.

Agreed. I did a treatment for a Star Trek series based on the Relativity episode in Voyager - everything is based 500 years later with time travel possible and one ship patrolling the 'temporal prime directive' to ensure nefarious actors weren't violating the timeline. Would've been a great series imo.

There were also a couple of episodes on Enterprise (the series) where characters from 500 years in the future came back to the Enterprise time.

This is much better than I expected. I'm enjoying it so far.

I thought the first two episodes were, well, utter crap. The third episode, which is kind of like a restart and a first episode, was a lot better though.

I agree it doesn't feel like Star Trek but I can see why they try to do it differenty rather than more of the same (though I would happily have taken that. Sometimes I think TV people try to be too clever for their own good).

Very competent sci-fi episode, but I'm pretty much ready to quit. There is much better general sci-fi (like The Expanse) and this isn't Trek. They took one of the regular Trek tropes
scary alien wants to be a friend
and used it faithfully, but in this war plot it's all terribly dark. Also the intensity of the war and the nature of the captain means there isn't much room for character interactions that made up most of old Trek episodes.

Yeah, this is my initial impression as well. Sadly, most things are pretty dark/bleak atm - if it isn't a show on terror, it's not far off

I liked this weeks episode. I was scared this was going to be villain of the week but its been a bit more restrained. I can really see it picking up which is nice.

I'm still pretending this is after Voyager though!

Still annoyed by the literal darkness of this show. They even made up a reason for captain and Ripper. But hey, can't see poor effects and set design if you...well, can't see.

Lots of stupidity in the show, from captain, Security officer, even Michael Sue, all the way to miners being crushed by debris. I might've imagined that last one, but that easily could've, should've happened.

I was never a fan of the whole Klingon internal issues even in previous shows so I find that pretty boring (and annoying, because of the need to read subtitles. A lot). Plus, why do they look so strange?

I find the sound mixing a bit off in this show. As in the volume of the people speaking is a bit low relative to the sound effects and musical score, which rather annoyingly makes me have to raise and lower the volume to hear whats being said but to avoid getting overwhelmed by the effects and music.

I've watched 3 episodes because a friend of mine is very into Star Trek and we were talking about it. Really disliked it. I could make a long list from Ep3 on its own of everything I thought was stupid and plot-hole-tastic in it.

I'm actually really enjoying it, maybe i'm because i'm not taking is so seriously?

I'm not a total trekky or anything, so once you remove all the star trek universe issues people might have, it's been a good solid, exciting start for me, with plenty of potential.

I might not be connecting with the characters that quickly, but it's only been three episodes... i'm willing to give that part a chance.

That's the current weakness of the show imo. But I think that will slowly improve as the Season progresses once the characters get a bit more time to develop. Currently they've been stuck in one place and it's a bit tricky initially to work out who's who and what the names all are.

As for the actual show, personally i'm enjoying it. I know people are comparing it to the Expanse (feck knows why given how different the shows are) but i'm enjoying it just as much if not slightly more. On the Discovery itself we've only been given 6 characters to look at, one of which died this episode. The prologue episodes were necessary from a story point of view but it's also ballsed up initial reactions as it was basically a show reset button after Episode 3 and only 3 characters remained from those first two episodes. Needs a bit more time to establish the main characters before stepping down and looking at some of the other characters (the random doctor and some of the bridge crew).

4 episodes in, still think its pretty good.

The Klingon parts are fecking awesome.

"I saw your smile when you picked the meat from her smooth skull"

Star Trek or not, for some reason from 3rd episode onwards, i am having some creep dark vibes while watching.

Another point i'd like to add is i guess we know why the spore drive didnt go mainstream. I'm guessing the whole "forcing an alien lifeform to navigate for us" wasnt accepted by the masses

The Duras sisters could eat me any time they want

Changed my mind on this, i loved the first two episodes, and am bored by the following two. I realised i loved Michelle Yeoh's character much more than anyone who's around on this ship... there's just no heart in the show.

And yeah, now the novelty has worn off, the Klingon scenes are boring the arse off me too :)

Production value is overwhelming at times, also loving the sketch style intro and at least trying to do something different.

Michael will definitely need some arc, though... thankfully Star Trek is also about journey but yeah, hard to expect twists and rewarding surprises in first season. This will take a while to build.

I've enjoyed it a fair bit so far. I agree with the consensus that the Klingon scenes need a bit more to them, but I like the captain of the Discovery and that he has a darker side to him.

I wonder if they'll throw in redesigned Romulans at some point, but considering the Vulcans look the same it seems unlikely.

Good show so far though.

Romulans have already been redesigned in the movies.

Yeah they did the same with the Klingons as well though, then changed them again. I wonder if they’ll to another redesign for the Romulans or stick with the film version.

Any Klingons speaking in the new episode? I have trouble with subtitles on my Plex and need to watch it on my computer if so.

The more i watch of this the more i find myself zoning out. I didnt mind the darker tone earlier but now i do. I wouldnt mind it so much if it had characters i cared about but i dont like Michael, the Captain isnt any better and Michaels room mate makes me want to throw a chair out the window.

As first i wished they set this in the future. Now i'm wishing it wasnt called Star Trek. Would work a lot better as a stand alone sci-fi.
