Television Star Trek

I made the mistake of watching some Enterprise episodes before watching last night's Discovery. Big mistake.

The writing back then was noticeably better than this new show, which left me pretty disappointed.

Despite my misgivings, I’ve found that I’m quite enjoying this show.

For me at least, I think that somehow it’s managed to capture the feel of Star Trek now, and as it grows more confident hopefully it will explore its boundaries with greater confidence.

“enterprise” never really felt like Star Trek to me, and nor did the movies. Not in the way that this new series does. Quite surprised.

Discovery’s overarching plot is stupidly mundane, unfortunately, but the side stories it’s generating save it from ruining the shows theme. If the writers had been braver it would be a better show - however, the characters are extremely likeable and generally believable.

Happy to hear this has been renewed for a second season. Really enjoying it thus far and looking forward to seeing how it develops, shame we only get an episode a week. :)

I dont know how long the show can survive given its on a streaming service that itself is likely not going to fare well.

Are you being sarcastic? Netflix not survive? Or did you mean because it’s on a streaming service it won’t survive?

Netflix is outside the US. American shows rely on revenue from ratings from within the US. In the States the show is on a streaming service called CBS All Access.

@Raoul @Welsh Wonder ah I see. I was starting to worry about Netflix. How was I going to binge watch shows at 4 in the morning  then feel guilty when it asks me if I’m still watching every 3 episodes.

Netflix is perfectly safe. They just invested about $15billion in original programing. Unfortunately Star Trek Discovery is owned by CBS and licensed for non-American distribution through Netflix global.

It's getting more Star Trek by the episode. Mud reminded me a lot of Q in that episode.

The latest episode was a rip off of TNG episode "Cause & Effect" (Season 5, Episode 18)

I barely see any Star Trek in this. I mean....having a party in 10 forward with hip hop and the Bee Gees playing in the background ? Do they actually expect us to believe that this will be what people listen to in 238 years from now ? Not very believable.

And what's with this obsession with animals who fly around in outer space who can be conveniently beamed aboard Discovery.

The entire show smacks of poor writing with minimal adult supervision.

Minimal adult supervision...? Ok...

The writing is horrible. Nothing original about it. And that's before we get to the video game effects.

I would say ultimately you went into the show expecting it not to meet your expectations because you wanted something different (especially given you'd worked on a different concept). Only natural that you'd therefore be overly critical on this show.

I'm just happy they're doing more Star Trek and for me it's more watchable than Enterprise which was a show I really struggled to like. I watched it all but found it a real chore.

Cause and Effect was the episode they were playing Poker at the start right? In that episode the entire crew knew what was going on. With this episode it was a heist, the only similiarity being that both episodes were both looped. I thought the way the episode was put together was fun, lots of quick editing with various deaths and the guy that played Mud had good charm (no doubt we'll see more of him).

I do agree that the opening scene made me cringe though and I thought it was a bad sign, but enjoyed the rest. Lets not forget that the new films have also included 'old' music so I guess thats why they felt it was ok. Heck, even in Final Contact they had old music being played. The only critism I could have is that despite Mud wanting to destroy the ship and sell secrets to the Kligons he was basically let off free. You'd think they'd have thrown him in jail or something similiar for what was very serious crimes. Thats my nitpicking done.

As for the entire series, I was completely open and amenable to a great Star Trek series, but this unfortunately has been disappointing so far. There have been a couple of decent episodes, but all things said, its been pretty poor.

The production quality seems artificial - far too much CGI and not enough drama and character development. And when they do attempt it, they make an absolutely mess of things like the suspension of disbelief violations we saw in yesterday's episode with the fake rave, 1970-2000s music, and lack of a viable villain. Give me any of the other 5 series any day of the week over what we've seen thus far on this one. The quality of the writing just isn't there.

This was a decent, very Trek-y episode. A little reminiscent of Yesterday's Enterprise from TNG (Guinan there, science guy here).
Not a fan of the college dance party at the start but that's the smallest violation that this series has made.

Edit: their technobabble consistently matches the worst of Voyager.

I really didn’t enjoy the latest episode. It felt like the old Startrek. Cheesy and kinda stupid.

Kinda how some feel about current United and Jose.

My roommate and I are enjoying this more and more each episode. Lots of interesting character conflicts being set up. Alongside the backdrop of a galactic war, I think there's plenty of interesting directions they can go.

Oxymoron!
I could have sworn there was some sort of rule on this forum that went something like “attack the post, not the poster”
What exactly is your issue? That I don’t enjoy the old StarTreks and find them somewhat borring and cheesy.

Ok cool, never understood why people do that on here. Seems a bit juvenile and pointless but each to their own.

I hope Discovery continues to forge its own path and keeps producing a more adult like version of the Trek world.

i've never got Star Trek but thought I'd give this a go with my kid who's 7, we're both enjoying it, it's hammy as owt but ok as a sit down as a family TV series to watch over a week or 2, can understand why proper trekies would be annoyed with it though as it's nothing like I remember Star Trek being, which is probably just as well for me.

I'm officially out now. I dont like it. And i know why now.

This weeks episode was really fun (its been done in Trek before but i'll allow it), i should have loved it. It had all the traits i would call Star Trek but you know why i hated it? Michael Fracking Burnham. Im just not warming to her. I find her really annoying. Hell i'm starting to warm to her sidekick and shes annoying as hell. The whole Vulcan but not Vulcan thing just isnt working for me.

Sigh. i'll probably watch it passively but im totally zoned out at this point.

Stargate anyone, they pretty much copied "window of opportunity" bar playing golf into space
Star Trek TNG did it well before Stargate. Hell i'm pretty sure the TNG ep was based on a twilight episode. Basically all ideas have been done before

I feel the same way. I really wanted this to be good, and I was fine with a departure from the standard feel of Trek, but as it stands this feels too distant from the principles that made it a great show. The ONE core thing that makes Star Trek special for me is that it's a dialectic. It casts light on age-old questions through futuristic scenarios, and makes you think. This doesn't do that.

I'm still watching and enjoying it, but it's poor as far as Star Trek goes. That said, TNG's first two seasons were quite forgettable, IMO, and that show is right up there for me. One can only hope that this picks up, but I'm not holding my breath.

Yeah that's true. TNG's first season was decent but not nearly as good as the 3rd and beyond.

Any Klingons speaking in the new episode? I can't get the subs to work on my telly and have to watch it on the computer if so.
