Television Star Trek

The first couple of episodes were pretty lame but now that the plot and characters are beginning to take shape, its starting to get a bit interesting. Its also a bit refreshingly weird watching Star Trek characters using swear words in a TV series.

I didnt like that part. It was almost like the producers were like "hey this would be edgy"

Also i couldnt help but cringe at the whole "Computer show me a list of starfleets best captains" then seeing Pike and Archers names there

But the end was interesting, like what the heck was that all about

Given the show's timeline, who else would they have on the list ?

Wasnt the names it was just fan service that they could have skipped. I mean what was the reason for that arc except to give a thumbs up to the audience?

Maybe i'm nit picking. I do enjoy it but the whole "this isnt trek" is starting to wear me down.

I liked that bit. The one area of concern is that some of the story is a bit rigid. So far the only substantial aliens have been the Klingons which isn't particularly imaginative. Compare that with the likes of TNG that had loads of different, interesting aliens they encountered.

I’m quite enjoying it. I’ve never really been a Trek fan. Being honest I absolutely hated it but this has won me over.

I like it less and less, and started using fast forward...it's just an unpleasant watch. Maybe if someone turns on the light every now and then.

Hurts the captains eyes...

Oh another bit i didnt like with this weeks episode. The captain killing his crew so they wouldnt be tortured? Thats not trek. Cant imagine Picard doing that or Sisko and he got the Romulans involved in the Dominion War. Also whats with Michael calling out Saru's decision based purely on his race? I mean wtf?!

We've had plenty of Captains and Admirals do crazy shit in all of the films and tv shows. It's just we've always had the main Captain have a distinct moral compass and be the perfect Starfleet Officer. This time round we've got a Captain who isn't. It's kind of refreshing given how preachy all the others have been.

Speaking as someone who's never been a particularly big Star Trek fan it seems like some long term fans of the show have a very specific expectation of what they want and anything that doesn't match up is derided as non-Trek. Doctor Who fans are the same. So are some United fans with all that 'United Way' shite.

Just an observation with absolutely no scientific backing.

Its a fair comment. Its something which has only started to strike me, when the series kicked off i really liked it. The major problem here is the tone is completely different to anything of this era. Starfleet has always been about exploring the unknown and trying to solve things through diplomacy. As a show i felt the old series was much smarter, this feels like generic space program 4.

Finally, this show has a very dark tone which doesnt suit the universe. I've said it before and i'll say it again. This would have worked post Voyager.

Thank you for not taking it the wrong way! I can see where you're coming from in respect to what you've written there.

why is it necessary for the ship to rotate and flip just before the jump ? makes no sense.

I'll preface this by stating that I am not a Trekkie (sp?) in the strict definition of the word, however, I'm enjoying it immensely. I'll go ahead and predict the future of this thread being one polarised by strong opinions of like or dislike. Doesn't seem to me to be a show that will allow people to "like" it; it'll either be love or hate. I didn't like the main actress in Walking Dead and had reservations going into this, however, I do like her in this. It's difficult at this stage to know whether such and such a character is going to grab us. I imagine, just like in the beginning of a book, it takes time to connect. Hopefully, when it's all fleshed out a bit it'll deliver. I remember having similar initial thoughts during Gotham in season one before they wrote some serious character and story arcs.

Aspects I have liked but the sinister tone of the series is an abomination to Roddenberry’s vision and I’m not even a Trekkie

I'm watching Star Trek Voyager episode 1

It's so dated. Looks worse than TNG somehow.

Isn’t this supposed to be set before all of the other Trek series. Them going out and coming across new races. I’m as I’ve said earlier not a Star Trek fan but I’m really enjoying this. Might be the darker tone. However I’d imagine this is the reception you;d get from a alien race when you’re trying to invade their territory. I mean the first two episodes were about exploration but they came across the Klingons who wanted war against star fleet. So I mean the show kinda has to have a dark tone for war no?

Mate. Thanks. I’ve being trying to think what I had seen her in before but like some sort of sadist I refused to give up and just look it up on IMDB but now I know exactly who she was in TWD. Thanks this torture has been going on for weeks

Kill Shasha and her room mate and there may be hope for this series yet.

I'm really annoyed that they've chosen to make this "grown-up" and added swearing, meaning I can't show it to my 9 year old. It's Star Trek. You don't need it. The tone can be darker without needing to add "Way fecking cool" for no real reason. He loved the first two episodes as well, but now can't watch the rest. Real shame cos I'm really enjoying it so far, and I know he would too.

Not one to judge mate but if you're happy showing your kid a Klingon stamping on someone's head with brains splattering then pretty sure he's heard the f word before too ( or just forward that little section). Sure it won't be a common theme either

The show is really violent though, in a graphic way which Trek never had before. I'd think that was far worse than a scene with a feck thrown in. (pointlessly)

Edit: what @We need an rvn said

@berbatrick @We need an rvn Wasn't happy with that either, but I didn't see the need to take it as violent or adult as they have generally have. Stupidly that is the only swear word in the entire episode, albeit that the same phrase is immediately repeated. Either its a common thing, or its not. Either the violence is a common thing, or it has no place.

To me, they've noted the ratings on series such as Game of Thrones, and decided that they need that too... and that the only way to get that is to stick a cello in the theme tune, kill off main characters, put some extra violence in and add the occasional swear word. Next they'll have children calling each other cnuts, cos that works too, irrespective of whether it works in the context of the universe.

I don't have a problem with taking the series in a darker direction. But you don't have to take it in the same direction as other shows in order to make a successful series.

The biggest shame is that the first two episodes were not like that, other than the killing off of the captain right at the end of the second episode. I binged watched these two, allowed my son to watch them also, and then have just watched the next three. I now can't show him the rest of the series, because they've got increasingly violent and sweary. I personally don't think that they needed to do that.

got no problem at all with the f word being thrown in. I also liked the way it was done - a young inexperienced (officer?) accidentally blurting it out and then fearing she would get scolded by her superior - who then joked back saying that word was needed in the situation. I like how it was dealt with.

A traditional star trek series just wouldn't survive nowadays, they have to change and mature and match modern day standards. I love Star trek, but it has to adapt to survive.

I enjoyed the last episode a lot more, you're starting to see more of the likeable side to all the characters... and there were no dull ten minute klingon chatty scenes!

Funny i didn't even realise the f-word was a thing until i read about it the next day haha

Or they could add nudity.

So you're saying its been assimilated? :nervous:

I love the Klingons. They actually seem somewhat alien-like rather than humans with plasticine on their heads. There obviously needs to be a limit to how inhuman they can be, but the balance is right, imo.

I think there's a parallel between Batman and Star Trek over the decades. The sixties we camp and kitsch, with hammy acting and superficial storylines. The nineties tried to be a little more serious, but were hampered by the need to sanitise everything. Post millennium, we're finally getting to see something akin to how the characters might actually behave if they were real. The Klingons alone show that the makers aren't going to sugarcoat everything to make it easily accessible. I'm very impressed so far.

Great post dude. You’ve pretty much hit the nail on the head. This just feels more true to how people actually would be.

I'm watching Star Trek Voyager episode 1

It's so dated. Looks worse than TNG somehow.

Very CGI heavy as opposed to the models used in TNG I would imagine.

Anyone else notice the digital grain?

I've noticed a few things:

- As has been mentioned before, the sets are just too dark. Bizarre DP work to say the least
- Far too much CGI that makes the show seem like a video game
- The plot line so far is average at best. I watched some of the better TNG episodes recently and the story was muuuch stronger
- Audio quality is off. Sometimes the talking is too low compared with the effects, sometimes its ok. Poor sound design in general

The only way I could see tribbles getting an airing on this series is if one of the factions somehow weaponised them with a deadly biological agent.

Vive la difference.

Really enjoying this show. Not seen any previous Star Trek TV series but I found this very easy to get into.

It has already been renewed.

I just watched it, thought it was a pretty good episode. Advanced a lot of the characters and direction the storyline will go a lot I felt.
