He's been on the bench because of a groin injury.

Marvellous player, to come off the bench again and cause such an impact. First getting Ramos sent off when he was through on goal and then scoring himself. Could've won the game as well. I thought Atletico's disallowed goal to make it 3-3 was onside. Harsh.

Chelsea are closing in on a deal for Sergio Aguero from Atletico Madrid which could be worth £50million - and make the Argentina striker the highest-paid player in the Barclays Premier League.

Aguero’s pay demands mean he is likely to earn more than Manchester City’s Emmanuel Adebayor, who is believed to be on a £170,000-a-week deal at Eastlands.

Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti is set to launch a spending spree in the January transfer window after the Court of Arbitration for Sport suspended the club’s controversial transfer ban imposed by FIFA.

Chelsea were suspended from signing players for two transfer windows in September after being found guilty of inducing Gael Kakuta - then a 15-year-old with Lens - to break his contract with the French club two years ago.

Ancelotti has been tracking Aguero for some time but was understood to be put off initially by Atletico’s astronomical price tag.

The Italian coach was also concerned by the player’s lack of maturity at just 21, while at one stage Chelsea were also not prepared to meet his excessive wage demands.

However, after seeing Aguero score two stunning goals against Chelsea in the 2-2 draw away at Atletico in the Champions League earlier this month - and with the transfer ban lifted, if only temporarily - Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has changed his stance.

The club have already had a £31m bid for Aguero turned down last summer but are now prepared to increase their offer.

Aguero volleys home a stunning goal against Chelsea in the Champions League recently

The Argentina forward has a £53m buy-out clause in his contract but Chelsea believe they can land Aguero for less as he would be ineligible to play for them in the Champions League.

Ancelotti is convinced Aguero can form a potent partnership alongside Didier Drogba, which would mean Nicolas Anelka being relegated to third-striker status.

Aguero is just the type of player who fits the bill for Ancelloti as he mounts a challenge for Premier League honours.

Averaging a goal every three games, Aguero appears to have welcomed Chelsea’s interest and said recently: ‘It’s nice people say I could play in a team like Chelsea. They are one of the best in the world. I like it (Chelsea’s interest) and it makes me happy.’

When Ancelotti was asked about Aguero after the draw in Spain, the Chelsea boss said: ‘I like him. I think Aguero can play with Drogba for sure.’

I think Kun is a fantastic player, would love to see him at United, but at that price and those wages, jog on. Far too much, and would hammer the pay structure at united.

Chelsea can have him, He's a great player but there are better options out there. I don't think he's as brilliant as people think he is - reminds me of Tevez too which isn't good.

There aren't really as good as him (one or two names are across my mind that's it) and if I hope it's only because he's argentinian that he reminds of Tevez otherwise it means you have never seen him play

While I think he is a little over-rated by some, he's a distinctly better finisher than Tevez and can boast a superior touch.

Forlan has been better for Atletico for a while now.

Most would argue Aguero's been the better of the two this season. Forlan was better last season, Aguero was better the season before.

Chelsea can feck off! We should splash some dosh on this fella.

Because he's brilliant.

Drogba and Anelka look awesome up top together. In this form I can't see him breaking into the team.

Can't let Chelsea have him. Drogba and him up front would be full of power and talent in the attack, and they are already solid at the back and packed in the midfield.

I haven't seen much of him, but I don't think he's the type of striker that we would be looking at if we were thinking of spending serious money. He strikes me as being similar to Rooney (and Berbatov for that matter) in that he can play further up the field, but is best in behind the main striker. Chelsea is a different story though, with Drogba and Anelka already on the books they'd be looking at a player like Aguero if that's the position they were looking at strengthening.

Agreed, but not as simple as that though. In 2007/08, Aguero was marginally better. Last season, Forlan was a country mile ahead of Aguero.

Aguero is brilliant. I don't know how close to the actual truth this rumor is but I'd be over the moon if we got him.

He tore Barca apart last season, for example.

Aguero was very patchy last season, whereas Forlan was a model of ruthless consistency (32 La Liga games, 32 goals), netting an outrageous collection of strikes.

Aguero was making a name for himself, scoring in Europe at 19/20 years of age in 07/08. He was named the second best player in La Liga, I'm pretty sure. I wouldn't say he was just "marginally better".

Forlan was certainly better last season, he outshined Aguero but that's not to say Aguero had a poor season. He had a good season, obviously not as good as his previous one but still played well. Forlan takes all the penalties for Atletico. I remember last season even when Aguero would win a penalty, Forlan would still take it and score. Forlan did score a shit load of goals, but Aguero was still good. Likewise Forlan was still good in 07/08.

Well both strikers have been good since 2007. What I would add though is that Forlan, last season, was as good as any striker in Europe. Aguero has not (yet) reached that level of performance consistently over the course of a season.

Forlan is 30, Aguero is only 21. If Kun continues to improve he'll be easily one of the world's best players over the next few years.

Agree to some extent. Also agree that he's not quite as good as he's made out to be, as has happened with Pato and Benzema, it's to be expected.

Thought there was a bit more between the two than just a marginal difference in 07/08, there was a pretty clear gap in quality I thought.

If I was to give them marks out of 10 for both seasons it'd be something like:

07/08

Forlan - 7.5/10
Aguero - 8.5/10

08/09

Forlan - 9/10
Aguero - 7/10

Essentially Aguero didn't hit the same heights in his better season and hit lower lows in his worse season. That makes sense in my head, but I blame the vodka.

From The Sun:

Aguero freezes out winter move

CHELSEA target Sergio Aguero insists he will not walk out on Atletico Madrid in January.

Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed the Argentina striker is a player he would like to have at Stamford Bridge.

But Aguero has no intention of bolstering Chelsea's squad when the Premier League leaders lose Didier Drogba, Michael Essien, Salomon Kalou and John Obi Mikel on African Nations Cup duty.

The 21-year-old said: "I want to help Atletico get out of the situation they are in.

"I'm committed to the team and I'm not moving in the winter, whatever anyone says.

"I will talk about the future when there is something to say.

"And the first people I will talk to are the directors of the club."

Atletico are currently in the La Liga drop zone after winning just one of their opening 11 games.

They have also failed to progress from the Champions League group stage.

Anyone see his assist for Maxi as well? Wow. He played a part in Forlan's goal too - so basically all four goals.

He came to life in the second half. About time Atletico got a decent result this season. Aguero was instrumental in all the goals the last one when he set up Maxi was a great piece of individual brilliance. The free kick wasnt half bad either mind you.

Chelsea will be encouraged that transfer target Sergio Aguero has now publicly stated he is prepared to leave Atletico Madrid, although he admitted it is more likely to be in the summer than the January transfer window.

• Harris: Chelsea close on £100m Aguero

That gives Chelsea the option of completing a deal in January and then loaning the young striker back to Atletico until the end of the season.

That is the safer option for the Blues, as they do not know if the appeal against their FIFA-imposed transfer ban will be successful, meaning they could still face a freeze on signing players in the summer.

January would be the ideal time to swoop, with Chelsea hopeful of persuading Atletico to let their prized asset move to the Bridge to step in for the African Nations Cup-bound Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou. But Aguero is cup-tied for the Champions League - making a loan move straight back to the Vicente Calderón a more likely solution.

As ESPN Soccernet reported last week, intermediaries are busy working on a £100m package which includes a long term contract for the Argentinean striker and a transfer fee thought to be close to £50 million.

The base fee would be £40 million plus add-ons, and the salary could rise to one of the biggest in the world.

Talks are ongoing to try to break the deadlock for a January transfer, one of the biggest of all time, perhaps only behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka going to Real Madrid.

The Argentina striker is being loyal to Atletico by saying that he would prefer to see the season out with the La Liga strugglers, but is willing to change clubs if the move is financially beneficial for the Spanish club.

Aguero said: "I've always told the club that from now until June I'll stay here. Then we will see what they do. If in June the club still needs money, there are ways to help.

"This is my home, but if the club have to sell me, I must go. I know nothing. Now I need to concentrate on getting us into Europe."

Aguero starred in Atletico's 4-0 victory over Espanyol on Sunday, scoring twice and making the other two. It was only their second League win of the season, leaving them 17th in La Liga.

He has emerged as one of the most exciting young talents in Europe and there are frantic moves behind the scenes to come to an agreement with Atletico now, even if means loaning him back for the rest of the season. That in itself would complicate an already complicated financial scenario.

Yet another Aguero story.

Chelsea fail in £53m Sergio Aguero bid as Manchester City enter race for Atletico Madrid's red hot Argentina star

Chelsea tested Sergio Aguero's desire to see out the season with Atletico Madrid by reportedly offering £53million for the Argentina star.

The La Liga strugglers apparently rejected the offer of an initial £44m plus add-ons after Aguero made it clear he would not court a move until the summer.

Manchester City have also made enquiries over the last few days, according to Madrid newspaper AS, after Aguero concluded his long-term future was away from the Vicente Calderon stadium.

But the striker feels such a debt to the club he joined as a 17-year-old that he is reluctant to leave Atletico in their current state: fourth from bottom in La Liga with just two wins from 12 games and out of the Champions League.

Atletico's financial problems mean they will eventually have to cash in on a player who has a buy-out clause of about £55m.

Inter Milan have also shown interest, but may struggle to meet the fee, though Argentina boss Diego Maradona would be keen to see Aguero join the Italian champions.

Maradona, the grandfather of Aguero's son Benjamin, prefers Italian football to the Barclays Premier League.
Chelsea's Didier Drogba

Chelsea are still seen as favourites to sign him but are working under the threat of a FIFA transfer ban.

The Blues are clear to do business in January while an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport is heard and may come to an agreement with Atletico that would see Aguero transferred this winter, only to be loaned back to the Spaniards for the rest of the season.

However, Stamford Bridge boss Carlo Ancelotti would like the player sooner rather than later because Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou are expected to be play for their countries in the Africa Cup of Nations next month.

After scoring two and making two in Atleti's 4-0 victory over Espanyol at the weekend, Aguero admitted this could be his last season in Spain.

'I've always told the club that from now until June I'll stay here,' he said, 'but if the club have to sell me, I must go.'

I'm not sure Hughes will have much longer to worry about it the rate he is going.

Kun certainly would make an immediate impact if he moved to us, great on the ball, electrifying, pacey, can do a good job cutting in from the wing, has a good pass, and to sum it up, he actually has way more accuracey for long shots than Tevez and has scored consistently more in a poor Athletico team. He would be a perfect signing ! Hope we don't miss this bloke like we missed Torres. I also forgot that his workrate is also fantastic.
