Seamus Coleman

Yup. The Caf is very pro-Everton, for some reason. At the time of the WC, Jagielka was apparently some distance ahead of Smalling and Jones and deserved his spot as first choice.

Hey hey, don't worry, I'm still here. I still consider Martinez, McCarthy and Coleman to be overrated shits.

Baines is one of those players who looks great at Everton but would be poor elsewhere where there is more pressure. His performances for England said it all, overrated and ideal for Everton as that is his level.. similar to Fellaini who was brilliant for the toffees.

Barkley and Coleman have something about them which suggests they can play at a higher level.

I don't buy this he would be an upgrade for almost any club in this league at left back. His strengths are his delivieries so he'd be even better in any top 4 club where the emphasis is attacking.

the first two goals were baines and jagielkas fault for playing/seemingly playing costa/ivanovic onside. coleman was the only defender who in both cases made sure he played the forward-most player offside.

the third goal/own goal was mcarthys fault for letting hazard past him (which coleman didnt allow all evening) not coleman who was marking fabregas.

the 4th goal was a great strike by matic. he wasnt closed down by distin and jagielka (who was v poor all evening). coleman in fact did very well to spot the danger in the form of ramires lurking on the shoulder of the last defender since mccarthy had lost him as he snuck into the box.

mcarthy again was at fault for the 5th as he didnt track ramires again. coleman stuck with his man (costa) in case ramires pulled it back instead of going on his own, colemnan would have done his job and blocked it.

the last goal was obv besic's fault (who btw also looks like hes a proper player)

he assisted mirallas's headed goal and made the opportunity with which mirallas drew an increadible save/hit the post.

so please watch the game and then write. coleman was amazing throughout.
Good post.

I watched him during all of England's games and all that form for Everton went to shit. It would have been an Ashley young situation where the best crosser in the league turns to crap when playing for one of the big boys. Luke Shaw will easily surpass him, Moreno is already better and City have Kolarov/Clichy who both are title winners. Then you have Chelsea with Azpilicueta... none of the big teams need Baines, aside from Arsenal perhaps.

If he truly was top notch, he'd be playing for a top 4 side by now... He's at the right level.

I watched Lampard and Gerrard being shite for England for a decade (what's that to do with anything). You could have put Baines in place of Kolarov or Clichy and City would improve. Shaw has the potential to be better but ATM Baines is better. Azpilicueta is solid but Baines is far better going forward. Moreno has not been better than Baines IMO. You are doing Baines a massive disservice he has been the best left back in the league for roughly 3 years now. Playing with better players I'd imagine it would improve him.

I'll agree to disagree. I think he's done the most with his talents and agree that he has been great for Everton, but then again so was Fellaini. Anyway I think we've done what we can in terms of arguing on this matter.

Coleman could play for any of the top sides. He is a quality full back and I would love to have him here. If Rafael can get fit and stay fit for the season we don't need him though

Absolutely. The only full back I'd take over him in the league is a fit Rafael.

That is the issue, Rafael is made of glass so is therefore not good enough. Make or break season I feel for him, I can't see LVG taking kindly to a sicknote.

I think all would, but Rafael is a perpetual sick note and he has been since the day he broke through. He's just one of those players, more unlucky or more susceptible to injury than most, for whatever reason.

I think it's time we started to act accordingly and being in a proper option to him, because every game we have to start with Valencia out wide a panda bear dies. Coleman would be a magnificent option, especially for our current system. Everton would fleece us though, so I can't really see it happening.

Rafael when fit is not even close to the player Coleman is apart from to United fans. Every pundit knows it and says it.

Nonsense. He was the best or at worst 2nd best RB when we won the league. He was fantastic.

Coleman's defensive shakiness will continue to be ignored as long as he plays for Everton.

I like Rafael enough to think we wouldn't need to sign another first choice right back if he could stay fit. That said, some posters here definitely overrate him. Coleman is definitely better. Maybe Rafael has the potential to be better than him but it's only a maybe right now.

if he could stay fit for 5 minutes he'd be decent enough for us. But as it is, we're in big trouble at RB. We can't rely on him staying fit, and we only have Valencia or a CB to play there.

I agree that Coleman is a better player, but it's a moot point all the while Rafael can never string more than a couple of games together on account of his injuries.

some people here dont watch enough football to know how good coleman really is. whatever defensive shakiness they are referring to is mostly in the form of positional understanding which he seems have improved a lot on since last season. hes arguably the best RB in the league and could well be playing for any of the top 3 sides.

 wtf

How is it a moot point. If Rafael is always injured then my point stands up even more. An Injury record should be considered when judging how good a player is and probably will be in 5 years given how injury prone all modern footballers seem to be these days. I mean the best Formula car just happens to be the most reliable......my roof is as good as yours (but only in the summer as its full of holes).....eh!

It's a moot point because Rafael will never even play enough to warrant any sort of comparison to Coleman, which means that we'll never be able to rely on him. I think you're agreeing with the point I'm making, so I'm not sure why you're trying to construe an argument!

Coleman is Everton's poor man Evra (in his later years). Classy when going forward but lacks a bit defensively! But nevertheless surely better than Valencia. It's a pity because Tony has the physical requirements for a very good wing-back. I think he will be one of Van Gaal's next victim (in the next 2 windows) in his step-by-step clear out. Coleman isn't a world-beater but definitely an option.

I actually think he is quite solid these days at the back, even when he gets caught out of position he recovers so well because of how fast and powerful he is. Going forward though he is something else and I love the aggression in his game and his fearless attitude.

Carragher reckons he's the best right-back in the league. Interesting looking at Everton's performances with and without him.

He came in the restaurant I work in, in manchester, at the end of last season. No one knew who he was but me ffs...genuinely nice, down to earth guy. Good tipper too :D

I was hoping he was in manchester to sign for us. He's a machine and I do think he's better than rafael :\.

How is Rafael overrated ?, he's brilliant, his enthusiasm is great to see.

The only thing letting him down is that he tends to switch off at bad times, but this has gotten less over time. His defensive work is also a lot better than his early years.

I feel people tend to focus on his mistakes alot, but unless he scores a great goal all of his positive output is ignored.

which is a shame as i feel he is better than coleman.

Coleman is without doubt better than Rafael, but I'm no longer interested in that debate.
Rafael had an injury riddled season last term and people completely forget how awesome he was for us the season before and what a brilliant talent he is.

There's not much more he can do to prove it really. Good for a goal too, these days.

How about performing in Europe's elite competition and proving he can cut it at that level.people said the same thing about baines and he was badly found out at a higher level.
