Scott McTominay | Napoli

I was referring to now, not the past decade. Poster said Mct's transfer was an upgrade for him, as he went to a better team.
I replied, our team is levels above Napoli, it's just that we haven't got the right manager. And we didn't before either, seeing as you mentioned the past decade.
We have had four managers, two that were past it, and 2 that were nowhere near the level required good enough. None of them achieved anything after their managing here which proves just that.
We can't make excuses about having poor managers.
Our current level is reflected in our team's actual performance, not where we think we should be if we had the appropriate level of manager.
We need to lose this sense of entitlement.

Was never fully appreciated at United by the fans.

A lot to do with the anti British bias within the fanbase IMO. Academy graduates whatever nationality get a rough deal too.

Glad he's started his career at Napoli really well.

Good luck to him.

I'm still firmly in the "It was the right decision to move him on, but happy that he is enjoying his time in Napoli" camp.

And no reason why that should ever change. He was just not good enough as a CM, and what most people are missing and re-writing history over are things unrelated to his CM job. Very happy he's doing well and enjoying himself at Napoli though, he seems like a top guy.
Both spot on. By all accounts, we would have liked to keep him but he also wanted more minutes guaranteed - so fair play to him for moving on. Also, him being one of our more sellable assets says it all really about him/how we’ve overpaid a lot of other players.

Hope he continues to do well and pick up a few medals that side as well but it was the right decision for him to move on.

Seeing more Abu media bashing nonsense with a few Italian coaches suggesting we were mad to sell McTominay. They love a united story don’t they. Now we’re reading that ETH didn’t want him sold as well.

Whilst pleased for him that he’s started well, he could win the ballond’or over there and I’d still maintain that he was never good enough in a United shirt

He's a decent utility player. The problem over the past decade has been our incoming transfers that somehow make us a poorer team. Hopefully that changes.

Agreed he was never good enough for us but annoyed we got lowballed in a market where for less effect players are going for £30+ million.

Good grief, he had 9 seasons with us and was picked by multiple managers but was apparently never good enough......

This game reminds me why I hate Seria A. Empoli going for the 4 consecutive 0-0 at home this season. Absolute shit

I think the fact that he only had a year left on his contract (plus an optional year) meant we were in a weak bargaining position. We tried holding out for £40m from West Ham in the previous summer and they walked away. We couldn't risk holding out for more than €30m a year later.

Can't judge the league on Empoli, who actually played well in the first half. They would have been the first team to draw their first 4 home games 0-0. It isn't the norm

On McTominay, for any of the ABU's, he was once again the same midfielder that we saw here. Napoli were dominated in midfield with Gilmour in particular struggling. They got better in the second but McTominay didn't do a great deal.

Top of the league though.
They were far better than you are suggesting.

I literally watch them every week (apart from yesterday ) but they weren't great against Empoli and Caprile had to make a few good saves.

Napoli have a tough run up now with Inter, Roma, Atalanta and Lazio to face. Good test for both Napoli and McTominay. Still believe Inter will win the league but Napoli should be back in the UCL next season.

I heard Gilmour had a better game against Lecce but Lobotka is a big miss

I did a trip to Naples this weekend and went to the Napoli - Leece game. Napoli did struggle in midfield although I thought Gilmore did ok. Scott didn’t have the best of games and he looked quite lost when receiving the ball higher up the pitch.

I did find it quite funny seeing fans sat beside each other with Maradona on the back of one jersey and McTominay on the back of another.

Also Lukaku blasting the ball 10 yards over the bar from 6 yards out gave me some horrid flashbacks.

I see they expertly dispatched Milan last night. Conte on a one game a week schedule in that first 6-12 months of a job is genuinely unkillable

Selling McTominay and buying Zirkzee springs to mind. McTominay could have made a job for us still.

That shit is just infuriating to watch. But also a huge indictment of Italian football as a whole.

No it isn't  he's made runs like that before in England. People just like to create narratives.

On the most rare of occasions he's beaten one man, he usually wandered aimlessly down a blind alley last season when he had the ball and we were breaking

Its a good run, well done on him. He seems to be playing decently despite not getting on the scoresheet that much

Scott could do a job, a very limited one, but was probably worth more than we sold him for. If we're saying he was a direct exchange for Zirkzee, then great, we've got a younger player, who's previously enjoyed success in the same league, crowned the Serie A young player of the year only a few months ago, and may well have a much higher ceiling.

We'll find out.

I probably wouldn't be getting too publicly upset with what I've seen so far, given the limited minutes played here and under a manger whose time was over.

It is perhaps a little unfair to directly compare the impact of the two players when one has 200 games for United and more than 50 caps for their country, and the other is just starting out.

Good luck to McTominay. I'm glad to see him following in Chris Smalling's footsteps.

His situation isn't too different from Sancho. People love making a narrative that as soon as the player is removed from United, they find their best form and become world beaters. We all know the quality and limitations of McTominay and he has been given enough opportunities to prove himself here. If a conservative manager like Conte can build a team around him and find success, then so be it. But we didn't have enough evidence to do that and he didn't lend himself too favourably in our system.

Overall, the Jose quote still remains true for most ex-United players. See where they play, how they play and if they play.

His situation is as different from Sancho as you could possibly imagine.

One is a lad who came up at United, always gave his absolute all in the shirt, was used in a position he was utterly unsuited to by a succession of managers and who performed consistently on the occasions he was played in his best role. Unfortunately for him his best role was a position that didn't really exist under those coaches and although he remained an excellent and effective plan B option off the bench, financial restrictions meant he was forced out of his boyhood club. Despite never really getting a fair run (in his best role) from coaches or often from fans, he never once spoke poorly of his coaches, club or fans.

The other is a lad who came up at City who weren't too fussed to let him go. A lad who has flattered to deceive aside from an early spell at Dortmund where he put up impressive numbers in a league known for players posting impressive numbers. He's been called out multiple times for poor timekeeping, professionalism and sleeping habits as well as his weak showings in training. He came in for a big fee on huge wages and did the square root of feck all in the shirt. After mild and indirect criticism by a coach, he threw his toys out of the pram and ruined his career at the club. He's still mouthing off about it on social media to this day.

Not comparing the two players at all. In terms of their attitude towards the game, its night and day.

I meant similar situation in a way that the media is happy to report that the two players are doing well as soon as they have moved away from OT. But we know for both that neither of them would have worked out for us in the long term. McTominay did provide some good moments last season but his goals, especially last season, often masked his limitations as a CM/CAM. The less said about Sancho the better.

Sorry I misunderstood and jumped the gun.

Yes, the media love jumping on anything they can use as a stick to beat United with.

I think Scott okay probably for a team trying to scrape top six or fourth at best but no where near good enough for a team trying to actually win the premier league or be in a title race, even as a squad player. He's extremely limited. Wish him all the best though and hope he does well at Napoli. Seems to be doing well there.

I saw McTominay go on these runs a few times for us.

I was never a big fan but I was against selling him, too. In a team that relied on individual moments instead of being well coached, I thought it was daft to sell a player who'd proven he can popup with some big goals and moments.

Could have used him today.
