Scott McTominay practically plays a free role in this team. And you wonder why we are in the position we are.

Fair comment.

Scott's a trier and he's fine running onto chances put into the box. However, at the clubs that rivals United's size, I can't think of a single player who is as basic on the ball. Particularly those that might get picked to play in a free role.

Ten Hag sacrificing the team's ability to play because McTominay might get on the end of something baffles me. Send him on for the final 20 minutes if you're not winning. But continuously starting him..?

Hopeless today. Didn’t have a chance to score, sadly - but didn’t do anything else of value, either

How does he keep finishing every game?
We're struggling to score big time and he's the top goal scorer. My hypothesis is that ten Hag is desperate for goals and rather play him in hope he can score even though that means screwing the whole midfield.

Please stop with this myth

He does not work hard.
Exactly and the other myth is he’s a goal threat. He’s had 2 games in over 200 when he’s scored a couple of goals. Last season he scored one in the Premiership in 24 games and the previous season he scored one in 30 games. That doesn’t look like much of a goal scorer to me.

These 2 goals he scored against Brentford were fun alright but will be the ultimate reason for Ten Hag getting the sack. He completely ruined the team beyond repair just to accommodate Scott McTominay trying to replicate these goals every game.

It’s also because Mount and Eriksen are injured. Really sorry state of affairs when Bruno and McT are basically playing AM.

Remember when everyone was saying that this guy is crap at football and we needed to get rid, and we were getting rid and we were all excited at the prospect of never seeing McT in midfield ever again.

And now he's first name on the team sheet putting in 1/10 performances 4 games in 5. And scoring a brace 1 in 5.

I think he's got worse on the ball as he's got older. I'm sure he was at least a bit better with it when he first broke through.

An athletic, Championship level midfielder, with an eye for goal and solid runs into the box.

Nothing more.

The fact that he is a guarenteed started in a “CL” team is an embarrassment.

… never does anything else of value

And he is our supposed midfield engine room.

But he either does nothing but scores

Or does nothing.

That’s is it.

Sadly too limited for the role he is playing, should be an impact player thrown on at the end, not a starter.

This one is particularly galling for me.

His work rate is extremely overrated.

Fellaini and now McT. Symbols of post SAF United.
I think it was because he was part of mcfred duo lumped together, but it was really Fred doing the hard work.

You think so? I’m sure we all celebrated his goals but not for one second has it changed my opinion of him. Just not starting material and debatably not even squad material (though he’d be a useful Fellaini late goals type sub in to cause chaos in the oppo box). And I’m sure the overwhelming majority also hasn’t changed their opinion on him. Or I’d hope not….i mean we’ve seen him for years in a United shirt.
I mean he scores a few goals against trash sides and people start typing up essays as why he is so good and why he shouldn't be used as a midfielder.

9/10 games he is a liability and you get results like these when you rely on low iq players like him. Can't pass the ball, isn't good defensively.

feck mourinho.

To make matters worse it's like he is first name on team sheet, plays every minute. All for 6 goals in 1259 minutes= a goal every 209 min= a goal every 2.3 matches. In the CL where we have scored freely, he has scored 1 goal in 381 min.

I always felt ETH was a brilliant coach but this has completely changed my opinion of him

I've reinstituted my no-watch rule for him. Total waste of personal time watching any match in which he starts.

Seems like a nice lad but he’s so far off the required standard on the ball and never will be anything more than a plan B or C for a major club. Him starting every game is indicative of how bad our recruitment has been. I do think we will look a lot better on the ball and will hopefully be able to turn the screw a lot more with Mount in the team instead of him for the second half of the season. That is if the manager survives to give him a proper run

It's fascinating to analyse why every single manager we have plays the guy. He's so limited.

Why we don't try him upfront as a striker? His strengths are obviously his predatory instinct in the box and he has a good finish in him. Play him anywhere else on the field and he is practically useless. The invisible man.

Yep, in short, we’ll always struggle to control football matches with players like him in the side. But I guess that’s how football has always been: score a few goals and most of your deficiencies are overlooked. McT should be nowhere near the starting XI but also if we’re fair, he’s probably only racking up the minutes because Casemiro, Eriksen & Mount are all out/injured.

Shocking player that apparently has become the core of current United team.

I wonder if once ETH is sacked in a few weeks he will reflect if making Scott his main man was a good decision.

He has his strengths but those should be utilized with 15 minutes of the game left and the team chasing goals. Can't fault his effort in recent games but he is just not a starter player for a team like United. Feels like he was EtH's last straw to grasp since he scored a few goals in a team that otherwise seems utterly unable to do so.

In fairness we struggled to control games without him in the team.

It's also worse when you consider that the best run of form last season was when he benched him. He rightly decided he wasn't good enough technically and some combination of Casemiro, Fred and Eriksen in deep midfield led to 75 points in the league, Europa League win over Barca, League Cup etc.

Then he's back in the team as a key player and we've lost more games than we've won, out of both cup competitions entered.

Was just about to reply with this. He's a passenger for 90% of games with a half arsed press.
Exactly. He is so far from what we need yet now he is almost the first name on the team sheet from ETH. Its a reflection of our lack of options up front. Perhaps we shouldnt have spent £70m on a very raw CF or £80m on a winger who cannot beat a man or cross

Nah, the one thing I will give him is that he's always looked a good goal scorer when he actually got into attacking positions. During the period that you are highlighting he was playing as a DM for almost all of it, and even before that when he was box-to-box he wasn't really getting into those positions enough. Now that we're playing him in this attacking position he's actually getting into those positions regularly so it's not a surprise that he's scoring at a decent rate, and I would fully expect it to continue.

The issue is that the rest of his game is even worse when playing in that position than it was when he was deeper.
