Not good enough, the pen was a shit decision though.

Stop starting him, let him be a plan B sub for Hojlund or if we need some height in the box.

He's our new Fellaini. Only useful in the opposition box, terrible everywhere else. Very harsh penalty decision though.

I don't think he's good enough to be starting like this but I certainly think he has his uses. The fact he is playing this much has me a bit worried about EtH...has he run out of ideas to turn around our form? I guess we have won a few now though, even if the football has been awful...

Agree that penalty was really harsh. The guy came from behind him and as soon as he notices he pulls his foot away, there was absolutely no contact! I blame the ref for being shit more than I blame McT.
he's certainly a useful player and does have limitations, but he plays with a hunger and desire that is missing from many in this team currently.
I think that's the reason he is in the team as often as he is.

He’s playing because he scored two goals against Brentford. Wasn’t getting picked before that, it’s certainly not for his hunger and desire as he goes missing and makes little effort to get back/track runners etc.

Other than goals (and penalties for opposition) he’s offered virtually nothing this season.

Loves to give away a penalty.

I always remember when he came against Chelsea last year and gave one away almost instantly.

Conversely he nearly got us knocked out of the CL
Could have genuinely scored two goals, almost ended the villain. That's our McT

People can be hyper critical of his performance as a whole sure... But nobody should blame him for the pen. It's never in a million years a penalty.

He's our Everything or Nothing kinda guy.

It was almost everything. But then, it was almost nothing.

Things are happening.

Not our worst individual performer but the starting plan with him and Bruno just doesn’t work. And pushing him deeper instead of Amrabat was a horrendous decision.

Hopefully he’ll get back to being our decent option from the bench.

I know the moron on commentary couldn't shut up about him, but what did he do apart from a couple of usual thumping tackles? He's such a limited player and most of the game passes him by, only to get clueless commentators frothing with a big tackle or a dribble here and there.

I appreciate the recent goals but a team with him starting is building to nothing. We need some other combination of midfielders to come good.

Wish he went to West Ham in the Summer. How he has managed to steal so many years here while being a below average player is beyond me. Plus now we are starting to see the likes of Robbie Savage praising the bare minimum from him, very similar to Lingard a few years ago when he clearly wasn’t good enough either.

Could Ten Hag not just play McT deeper, if he has to play him, as part of a standard midfield 2? With his partner being the pure DM and he with more freedom to attack the box? This nonsense of him immediately pushing up to make a front 2 with Hojlund when Utd gain possession is mad to me, all of his Scotland moments have come from arriving late, not starting in an effective strikers position.

He’s a wildcard player. Can chuck him on at the end and he might cause chaos in their box (or ours) but relying on him to play football is not wise.

He's not a proper midfielder. Really should only be used to disrupt games when we are desperate for a goal.

There was a fantastic save by Onana in the second half from a cut back. Video replays show him casually jogging behind and not tracking the runner. @GifLord

The fact we are trying to shoehorn this kind of player who is just nowhere near our desired level just in the hope of a random goal or two is depressing as feck

He should always play him deeper in the stadium, I'm sure there's a boiler room somewhere he could be put in.

I made a comment on the game thread on it. Funny thing is he saw him coming and literally never adjusted his speed or effort level to do anything about it. fecking joke of a player

Wasn’t a pen but still another poor performance from him. He doesn’t have a clue where to position himself in the buildup which is kind of important to play CM for Manchester United.

He should only be used as an impact sub when we throw the kitchen sink.

He doesn't want the ball though. A crazy low number of touches and passes jas happened too many times now to be coincidence.

I've always kind of liked McTominay but you can't have a player like that in a midfield two.

Can't we just try him out as a striker? It's not like we have forwards scoring goals for us anyways.

Real talk, was that a pen?
I didn't think so. Looked really soft and didn't look like much contact.

As for his performance, kinda meh. At least he touched the ball a lot more than usual but barely did anything with it.

Didn’t even need the replay to spot this from McTominay. It was utter incompetence. Onana bailed him out twice tonight.

Yeah he showed plenty of “hunger” plodding back allowing his man to go unmarked for their best chance. Something he’s done countless times b

Oh no... the hunger and desire claim is out. If a player is really bad those two descriptions are usually the last description that are used to say something positive.

He’s been rewarded with 2 starts after scoring 2 late goals as a CF. But that’s enough now.

Sadly we all know too well he will never be anything more than average in midfield.

United cannot seriously be about to go into another match against City with McTom in midfield.
