SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

There were known cases in the UK as far back as January.

There had been a death and over 100 cases just over 2 weeks ago. Tell me the harm in bringing these measures in 2 weeks ago?
I wouldn't have imposed such strict measures before someone even died from the virus. Unfortunately, there's a balance between the impact on lives and the long term economy and difficult decisions have to be made and sometimes (in hindsight), everyone's an expert.

I'm not an expert like you and I definitely won't politicise a global pandemic.

They said that there would be food drops for the over 70's and those that are vulnerable and they are supposed to start this week.
They've got the Civil Protection doing it where we live, and people don't even have to pay until the restrictions are lifted - the Mayor's made a personal guarantee to the shopkeepers (there's only one food shop and one pharmacy).

Cool, that was really helpful.
But far from the truth. Your rules seem very similar to ours and 90% of the construction business has been put on hold since the "lockdown". I wouldn't be sure about it at all, it's not essential work.

Any tips for convincing my boss that our work isn't as essential as he thinks it is so I can do nothing by play video games for the next month or so?

Very essential but do they need branches or can all banking be done online?

Some branches will definitely have to remain open. With reduced footfall and a likely increase in people contacting helplines, I'd imagine some branches will be closed and some staff temporarily redirected to other roles.

It's being reported as essential work only.

It will mirror the key workers list I'd imagine and will be released asap
Not in England the only official person who has said essential workers was Nicola Sturgeon. Labour have ask for clarification on what Boris means by Necessary. Sky seem to think that if you can't work from home you can go to work but it's not clear.

It’s terrifying that this thing wasn’t even there 4 months ago, wasn’t even recognized as a serious threat in Europe 6 weeks ago and now it’s basically ruining the whole world.

Its what is needed, but again, lack of details here.

The obvious ones:

Which businesses are forced to close (apart from retail that he mentioned).

How do self employed, zero hours and other temp staff now survive if they can't work and there are no provision for them in the aid packages?

Renters are screwed. Evictions haven't been banned. Termination clause has been extended from 4 weeks to 3 months, that is all.

are banks considered an essential service or will they close too?
My step sister and I work for banks. I can work at home/laptop bit she works in a branch ... said today the staff told their boss they'd only stay if he marked out two metre marks and let a couple of customers in at a time.

For a lot of people, we can use e/online banking bit there are still people who don't and still people/businesses who need to pay in cheques/cash (though they should use the postbox or ATM box).

I can see them closing branches soon or at the very least, limiting hours and staff

I'm curious, i cycle regularly and even i'm confused as to what constitutes once per day....a 6hr bike ride? So many loopholes i can find already.

It literally can't be enforced. At the worst of my Eating disorder I'd be out walking/jogging for a whole day. Technically that still counts as once here.

Even if we went out multiple times, it can't be enforced

You've obviously got a dog in this fight.

Johnson CLEARLY said you can go to work if you can't do your work from home. Please enlighten me about this 90% of construction business on hold - I run a construction business and I'm almost 100% you do not. I have (and had) guys working in Ireland, France, Germany and UK during all of this crisis. We have been given the green light to continue working in each country. Please provide actual fact based evidence (not anecdotal) that 90% of the industry has closed down.

Thanks

Happy to have been re-called by my company and soon home with my family again. Although I understand and agree being put in quarantine on my return it's still going to suck arse. It feels like my backwater country is on top of things though, I did not expect that.

I'll be honest and say that I'm relieved I'll be leaving tomorrow because watching the rest of Europe fight this virus, I don't fully understand what the plan is here? Cafes, nightclubs, restaurants all full to the brim on weekends. Feels like the Swedish government are sticking their head in the sand and hoping for the best or maybe the economy takes priority over lives? Either way I can't wait to get home and be with my family.

The key is not to be a dickhead.
Its what brought about this lockdown in the first place.

Yep, I work for numerous companies and they are all still operating.

I don't know where people are getting information from, but the misinformation in this thread can be ridiculous at times.

Obviously but if you were being a dickhead first time then literally nothing is stopping you doing it again. The speech will have no impact on those doing that stuff anyway

For anyone worried about police catching them on a second jog in the afternoon.

Btw the way I don't want the tories to increase the numbers of police but it's worth pointing out.

Colleague from work was returning home in the car and literally got pulled over by the police & asking where they were going to. Good to see the police stepping up quickly.

This thread is a prime example of selfishness in this country, loads of you asking about going out 3 or 4 times a day when we have been told not to, wanting haircuts, wanting this and wanting that.

Just follow instructions for once in your fecking life.

The vast majority of people will follow the rules. Those same people were doing it before anyway. The issue is those idiots who before were ignoring it are still going to ignore it as it is not enforceable. It's right to question it I think.

His speech still relies on people to not be morons. But morons are still going to be morons unless there is a genuine way to stop them. The only enforceable thing I could tell from his speech was no more than 2 people/household and closing of non essential shops

Literally this, if it wasn’t a dire situation we wouldn’t be in lockdown. They don’t want us like this.

The more i think about it, the more it could be enforced easily. Police only need to hold fort at key junctions on the road network and given how quiet it'll be they can spot repeat offenders easily from an exercise perspective. Not hugely likely, but not impossible.

I work in commercial banking and know quite a few construction firms. The only reason they're reducing work is if workers are self isolating.

(I don't see it as misinformation, I see it as deliberate agendas.)

Well whatever it is, in future when people on here whine about media/social media spreading false information, maybe they should remember this thread.

I'm in the process of buying a new house was supposed to be getting the keys on Fri. Got fridge freezer, couch, internet etc. All ordered.

Have no idea what will happens with all that ...I cant pay a mortgage on a house I'm not in!

In fact theres a chain so the seller will be stuck in it and so on. Wish they'd allowed something like that to be completed. Isn't it contractual/legally binding given the missives are concluded. What a nightmare all round .
