SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

Presumably there must be a release of people by age group perhaps? Location will come into it.

It just seems like a monstrously difficult situation to manage and implement.

I've no idea how it's going to work but I can't see this going away as it's spread far beyond containment at this point. No one is going to enforce such quarantines where the R0 goes below 1. The whole world would literally have to come to a standstill. It's not going to happen.

Hearing internet rumours that the US army are deploying in Manhattan. Any truth in that?
Not the Army; the National Guard is being called up. Standard procedure for a State of Emergency.

They help officials with a variety of random things like after a natural disaster...basically cheap labor.

NY will have a massive problem with looting and civil disturbance. It will get really bad there, I reckon.

Journalists are considered essential workers....not that the prick is an actual journalist mind.
And rightly so. I slag off Sky news a lot but reports like theirs from northern Italy can help save a lot of lives. Piers is a tit thought

No longer survival of the fittest. Lazy dumb people like to reproduce and spawn children with similar values toward society and their futures.

That was my thought process. Smarter people are busy building careers etc. Don't have time for families and when they do it's planned around financial situations. Then on the other hand you get bums just spawning next generation yobs by the dozen. Of course this is all just conjecture but it certainly feels like it.

The IQ of people across the globe is getting lower. It's a fact.

I don't know if its a fact, its a hypothesis based on the idea that IQ and education are negatively correlated with the number of kids and therefore less educated people are producing more kids.

The less educated could do with either the fact that they are not smart enough to read and learn or that they don't have the resources, either of which could be true. There's plenty of examples in developing nations where parents who never went to college produce kids who have PhDs because education in general is more accessible now.

Had to laugh doing my Asda shopping online, the only baked beans they have in stock are the Heinz 'no added sugar' variety. People don't seem to like the healthy option even in times of pandemic panic buying.
That’s great because being diabetic it’s the only ones i eat when I have the choice.

A mixture of social media, lack of or standardized education, populistic media causing populistic people, and a small bit of eugenics (which again is heavily influenced by social structure: people with fewer resources will not get the same opportunities as rich people. I mean, Trump became president.).

Hard data: Uneducated people have more kids on average and at a younger age, but this should not be seen in isolation. Environment and Inheritance are vital factors in this, while some extreme people will say that Heredity is the one that counts...

And IQ (tests) can be trained. A person with a scoring of 100 can "train" to perform higher on the test over time.

I'm just parroting this info by the way but to me it feels like people are less intelligent, certainly going by the way we're acting now. Anyway full article is in the link below.

"A defining trend in human intelligence tests that saw people steadily obtaining higher IQ scores through the 20th century has abruptly ended, a new study shows.

The Flynn effect – named after the work of Kiwi intelligence researcher James Flynn – observed rapid rises in intelligence quotient at a rate of about 3 IQ points per decade in the 20th century, but new research suggests these heady boom days are long gone."

So I've been wondering about what happens after a lockdown. Let's say, in an ideal world, that a lockdown is implemented in a perfect way and the health services manage to get casualties under control. How exactly do you then go about restarting society and allowing people to get infected in a manageable way?

I assume there are plans for this. Anyone know what they are?

The guy from the WHO was talking about the importance of aggressive testing and contact tracing in this regard. So I guess they use that to dictate when, where and how lockdown gets lifted bit by bit? Maybe certain regions/cities being treated differently, different measures being lifted in a staggered way, social distancing remaining in place and the elderly/vulnerable told to continue to self-isolate?

I'd imagine it would have to be done in a fairly bespoke way that suits the requirements of each country.

Honestly it was just a throwaway comment as it certainly feels like people are acting like total idiots regarding this.

The IQ of people across the globe is getting lower. It's a fact.

It's a flawed fact, the vast majority of people don't have their IQ tested now and almost no one had it tested in the past. And the test itself is flawed.

Well, its a study based on a population of Norwegian teenagers. You can't generalize it to the rest of the world. They also say that there is disparity within siblings of the same family so the cause is not even genetic with "dumb people breeding more" as is being claimed.

If I had the means and no family responsibilities I’d happily not leave the confines of my own home for the next year
Same.
My kid lives with his mother and it’s times like these I get really anxious over it, wish I could get him and hibernate

So I’m in work today, there must be between 300-400 staff who work here. People coming back from Spain just working away as usual, fire alarm goes off and now 300+ people are stood grouped up in the car park.

Absolute fecking shambles.

This, from my understanding it was developed to show people who were struggling, so works quite well for discovering people who are mentally disabled but not very well beyond that.

Norwegian teenagers don't need to perform in school to have a safe and resourceful life(far from anyone, but on average which drags the average score down). Incidentally, the scores started to drop off some time after they found oil and the life standard/social security increased... It is one of the fallacies of having too much welfare. Welfare/social security should be cornerstone in any modern society, but to much makes the population lazy, unambitious and costly over time. While there are no longitudinal studies as far as I know about this, I reckon one would see the same development in some animal populations if they would never need to search/hunt for food or hide from animals higher up in the foodchain over time or 1/2 generations.

This is why government has to take action.

These guys have to go to work else they don;t get paid.

The construction companies won't shut down until they have to, because they will be on massive penalties for any schedule delays on the project.

And this is what that means in practice.

I work inside a busy warehouse employs upwards of 3000 people and no sign of slowing down.

People really need to stop taking every out of context picture tweeted with a clearly agenda-fuelled caption as gospel. Piers Morgan is a fecking nightmare for it.

What?! Where is that?

Weird analogy during these times fellas. Do you want it to be survival of the fittest or do you want to wait out a vaccine?
People appear to finally be coming around to the science behind this, this isn’t going away. We lost our chance when it was in Wuhan, and we all now know we should have sealed off China.
Lockdowns will give hospitals time to prepare better (buy them time if you like), but I don’t see them as any long term solution.

If you ever needed one more reason to quit

Abstract
The epicenter of the original outbreak in China has high male smoking rates of around 50%, and early reported death rates have an emphasis on older males, therefore the likelihood of smokers being overrepresented in fatalities is high. In Iran, China, Italy, and South Korea, female smoking rates are much lower than males. Fewer females have contracted the virus. If this analysis is correct, then Indonesia would be expected to begin experiencing high rates of Covid-19 because its male smoking rate is over 60% (Tobacco Atlas). Smokers are vulnerable to respiratory viruses. Smoking can upregulate angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE2) receptor, the known receptor for both the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)-coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and the human respiratory coronavirus NL638. This could also be true for new electronic smoking devices such as electronic cigarettes and “heat-not-burn” IQOS devices. ACE2 could be a novel adhesion molecule for SARS-CoV-2 causing Covid-19 and a potential therapeutic target for the prevention of fatal microbial infections, and therefore it should be fast tracked and prioritized for research and investigation. Data on smoking status should be collected on all identified cases of Covid-19.

Apparently lots of people are reporting a loss of sense of smell and taste.

Permanent damage is scary, really don't want that happening. Might just be a temporary thing while you're infected though, don't know.

People really need to stop taking every out of context picture tweeted with a clearly agenda-fuelled caption as gospel. Piers Morgan is a fecking nightmare for it.

Assuming that is aimed at me.

Dan Dobson is a Union rep, so what exactly do you believe his agenda is beyond the welfare of those workers?

I’m a self employed electrician that sub contracts to a company and we’ve got a few sites like this. Luckily I’m working elsewhere but the building I’m in probably isn’t much better. Think everyone who I work with is just waiting for the order to stop now and hopefully a little help from the government.
