SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

NHS hasn't announced new cases yet. Perhaps it's a big jump.

Italy moved up to nearly 2500 critical

Had a mask test in hospital today because they'll be redeploying people around to help different specialties (in particular A&E and Medicine) in due course. I failed it because of my cheekbones. There was a breach in the mask as it's a one-size fits all type of thing - a lot of people have failed it because I think it's made for people with more fuller faces. This means the only way I can work in the frontline is if I wear those proper Hazmat suits - which is annoying because I really wanted to do my bit and help in A&E to be honest.

In other news in our hospital, a registrar has now developed a fever and a dry cough and was told to isolate today. Yesterday he saw 20+ patients in clinic. I was also on call with him on Tuesday. It's getting desperate already and the real shit hasn't even hit our hospitals yet. Wales seems to be a good week behind England with Covid cases.

Hearing some frightening stories from friends who work in hospitals across England though. As a doctor, I just feel that this is all a bad dream and we're about to wake up from it. The shit will hit the fan. I'm just fortunate that I'm at a fairly proactive (rather than a reactive) hospital who are trying to get as much planning in place before we lose vital staffing due to illness.

I'd like to know what they consider an "illness". Does it only take into account the medical issues such as chronic respiratory diseases, or diabetes, or cardiac issues or immunosuppressed conditions? May be skewed.

Did they just sign off advising people to go into store to thank their staff?! I’m not saying you shouldn’t thank whilst paying for your shopping, but don’t pop in to say thanks!

Think you're reading a little too much into it, tbh. Think it was more of a general sentiment thing if you do go shopping.

Just read an article that says 99% of deaths in Italy, people had pre existing conditions.

High blood pressure seems to be a huge factor. They are not sure why and loads of people have high blood pressure.

Any pre existing medical condition such as hypertension and diabetes would be counted, yes

Interesting story, between February 25th and March 10th someone stole 12k masks from one of Montpellier hospitals.

I’m queuing outside my local pharmacy for a prescription. They had to close between 3-5.30 because they’ve been overwhelmed. There’s a queue behind me about 30 people long and it’s barely hit Bristol yet.

No way this country has the infrastructure to cope with this.

I know the Tories in here get upset at any criticism of their dear leader but his answers just provide absolutely no comfort to anyone. Just waffling political platitudes.

Times like these need very good statesman to get everyone on board.

Because the Italians love to smoke. I hope I'm not being an ignorant stereotype-hunting baboon at the moment, but I feel thats why there's such high mortality there.

I can barely remember anything he says because as soon as he starts speaking my organs just want to shut down out of sheer boredom.

He's just terrible at messaging isn't he. He's just flat out said that the growth of the disease has been impervious to our efforts to contain it.

Which in itself is an aggressive waste because studies have shown that those classic masks do sweet feck all to combating from getting Covid19.

They don’t have the staff for longer hours. They need everyone to cover just that window or shelves will stay empty and queues will grow.

I guess, but then I also imagine there's plenty of folk who'd be up for a job.

I think we all agree Johnson is crap at these conferences.

But we're also doing a good job as well he says.

My favourite part was "we will stand by businesses so I hope businesses stand by their employees".

Are you ready for the inevitable CEO bonuses at the end of the tax year?

He just said "do you get me" ffs. I think he just made up a remote press conference on the spot then.

I didn't tell you which masks though...:p

FFP2 masks were included.
