After the SARS outbreak, they banned these 'wet markets' (meat markets full of live wild animals in awful conditions) because - shock horror - SARS started in a market just like the one in Wuhan.

Unfortunately, the wild animal meat lobby is very powerful, and soon after SARS died down, they petitioned the government with enough pressure to get the meat markets reopened again.

Whilst there is a temporary closure of these monstrosities, it's expected after COVID-19 has died down, that the wild meat markets will reopen again. Twats.
 
There is no way unfortunately that the UK finishes this without thousands and thousands of people dead . Worst thing is that people here don't care about advisories and are still going to pubs etc believing that somehow it won't be them

it's madness, check out the webcams for most of the London tourist attractions - people are carrying on like nothing is happening. We need enforced lockdown, not 'advisory'.

We even had Chinese doctor who tried to warn ghe world in november, but their government(or the virus) killed him bwfore anyone believed him.

there's a very, very low chance that he will ever require hospital treatment. and even if he did, he can just get an uber or something. it's certainly not risky enough to literally pack everything up, upheave your whole life and move to another country over.

I couldn't agree more that the culture of wet markets needs to change. I mean, it's undeniable really isn't it. Hopefully this will finally be the wake up call for good. We just need to remain careful at the same time not to make the criticisms too generalised and walk that all too familiar line. It's not like all Chinese people are out there eating bats.Far, far from it. It's a country of 1.6 billion people after all with many more of Chinese ethnicity around the world.

Wet markets are not the only thing that needs to change either, there's a really nasty practice of spitting everywhere which is rife among the older generations especially, but you see it much less among the younger generations in Shanghai for example so it's going to be a generational change that takes time. It's largely an education issue, the speed of growth and development that China has gone through is pretty much unprecedented.

On a separate note it's quite a microcosm of the whole political landscape that the Chinese government fecked up through suppression and deception, but was effective afterwards, while the western governments fecked up through complacency and incompetence. Singapore handles the crisis well? No surprise there. You could apply that above paragraph to almost anything.

Nope, though I can probably go to the hospital before I need a ventilator. And the only contact I have with the outside world are with Uber drivers who bring me food (unfortunately I have no kitchen), so in general I think that I have a good chance of not getting infected in the first place.

It is something I have been thinking about though, definitely.

Surely Uber drivers will be high chance of being infected as they will have come into contact with loads of people.

If this was someone who has been killed, the police would investigate who was the cause and they would be tried in a court of law.

And if proven guilty they would be charged.
And if it was a corporate entity, they would be suied for damages caused.

So. If China was proven to be responsible, why should they not be taken to the International Court of Law and be suied by all those affected.
China is a very large and prosperous country and must be held responsible for the damages they have caused.
 
Dutch mortality rate (on confirmed cases) seems rather high: 2.5%

However, I think a lot of elders have been hit so that probably explains it. Once more younger people test positive I expect the mortality rate to decline.

I know, but starvation is hardly an option. I don’t touch them, and then wash my hands immediately. I know it is not an ideal situation.

Actually, what is an ideal situation?

If you use food delivery, you can catch it from them.

If you go to a market, you can catch if there.

Short of growing your own crops toilet paper and everything you need, I see no solution.
 
Our hope rests on ready antiviral drugs. Forget the vaccines , would take months and won't help those already infected.

Several trials on several drugs have started: remdesivir, HIV drugs and antimalarial chloroquine. Also Kevzara to reduce/prevent?pneumonia

Well unlike Iran and NKorea being the only rogue nations chasing after nuclear weapons, China aren't the only ones with these wet markets, making it much harder to "exert pressure" on them and not the rest of the world. The bat soup video, for example, was filmed in some minor country that no one even remembers in SE asia.

Exactly. There is absolutely no need for them, and endagered species are still being sold. The health risk is huge.

Unfortunately, while accurate that it started in China, this is going to cause a lot of harm in the US and elsewhere. There will be idiots targeting people now.
 
My sister just got made redundant from her digital marketing company. They mainly deal with retail outlets and airlines so contracts being pulled left right and centre. Interested to see what Rishi has to say in the announcement.

He's in the Bay Area which has a massive density of population who are going to be frantically scrambling when this thing really starts to hit. I wouldn't ever choose to be in a major US population centre when things start to go tits up.

Targetting individual Chinese people is wrong.

But it can't be denied that the Chinese government is directly responsible for this. Not just because they allowed the wet markets to be reopened, but because they then actively went about covering up the outbreak.

I’m worried about this country (the informal settlements and the homeless especially) if/when this virus really takes off. HIV, TB etc. & the elderly. Things could get ugly. Otherwise we’re alright man. Keeping safe. Keeping to ourselves etc.
