SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

I apologise if it’s came across that way. It was meant to show the area and the type of people who are out around here, and I’m sure around most of the country. Again apologies it came across at all boastful.

However, there is NO reason for anyone even the over 70’s to be social distancing at the moment. When the plan is released and they tell people to do it. Do it. Don’t go off what youre reading on forums, social media or other counties who have nothing to do with the UKs best interests

Life isn't fair. Of course it isn't. But if you have the ability to save others by reducing transmission, how on earth can you justify not taking it?

I've got work tomorrow and as much as I'd like to WFH, I cannot at the moment and will have to go in until further instructions. However, I don't need to socialise at the moment and I want to play my part in one of the most effective methods of controlling this disease - social distancing. I will take whatever self sacrifices are needed to play my part.

I’ll do exactly as you will do yourself WHEN it is advised in the U.K. that is what we do. Currently that isn’t the plan. It’s probably not going to be for a good few weeks. Whilst other countries like Italy & Spain lockdown because it’s becoming out of control, we have a plan. A clear one. It’s morbid, it’s inhumane almost but it’s far better than most others have implemented.

Would we good if we could because currently NHS has 44000 nursing vacancies. Gee I wonder if a decade of austerity and taking away nursing bursaries was a good idea?
We would have had thousands more without Brexit too discouraging migration.

Remember the good old days of Brexit? Oh we laughed at that last night.

We just got off the phone with my father-in-law, who is a semi-retired (but still working) radiographer in Lviv, Ukraine. His understanding is that his hospital, the largest in the city, only ordered/received a total of 20 tests for COVID-19 and have no FPP2 or 3 masks for dealing with symptomatic patients. They don’t even have the necessary number of surgical masks for a fresh one for each patient. His ward has been rammed with many times the number of patients he’d ordinarily see.

When you say “feck the economy”, this is what an economy that has been fecked for years can provide for its public health system.

Yup and another issue is that you need to buy the replacement cartridges for the reusable masks. The costs add up, and if I remember correctly, some of the replacement catridges also have a use-by date.

Genuine question. Now you’ve labelled myself and others, of all ages and all different backgrounds ‘killers’ can you tell me where you’ve got your evidence for your claim? Also, now I’m a killer, would you say the doctor, police man, teacher, retail manager, health worker, social worker and therapist I’ve been out with are also killers?

The country dealing with the largest outbreak right now has been calling for the young in particular to respect the rules because they are the biggest spreaders of the virus, despite being least affected by it.

I'm not sure i'd say you're a killer, you are clearly an idiot, but I'm not concerned with you. I'm worried about my elderly parents who have a 10-20% chance of dying if they contract this. I'm worried about my 30 year old friend with a collapsed lung who hasn't left her house in 2 weeks and is now terrified because she has to go to her doctor with an eye infection. I'm worried about all the old men and women i see walking around town fearful of getting the virus, knowing it could very well kill them. If only the people here hadn't carried your same attitude a few weeks ago, we wouldn't be talking about cases and fatalities as pure statistics now. Unfortunately, as i have already seen here in Lombardy, its going to take exactly that before people like you realise this is a little bit more than 'just a flu'.

The herd immunity is mentioned as a byproduct for christ fecking sake, there's nothing contradictory and they've said it's not part of the plan yet they ran to the hills with and it went global and now still trying to look back at what they glanced at and sensationalized. Even heard the Spanish Football pundit Balague mentioning it on BBC.

Is this all you've got ? Because it's rather boring,.

We don't know this as they are still in lockdown(In particular China). Personally I think it's clear the tories in Britain aren't taking it seriously(Although thats for a whole number of reasons, not duh they be stupid!)but at the moment no one know what we will happened when China tries to returned back to some sort of normality.

China is back to some sort of normality. Only Wuhan region is in quarantine, the other regions are functioning (though not as normal, but people are going to work etc).

A total normality won’t be achieved until 2022 or so. Maybe a vaccine next year, a few months to vaccinate the entire world, and then some normality.

Of course, the lockdown won’t last forever, but being extremely cautious is gonna be the strategy for the next 18 months or so.

But the exact same thing surely happens with the regular flu. So I reckon covid being 20x deadlier or whatever the numbers say is about right. Both true figures will be lower than confirmed figures.

For the common flu we have decades worth of data so I would assume the true death rate can be estimated pretty accurately. Much more accurately than Corona's anyway.

Noggie PM just pledged a 10 billion GBP bailout for aid the industries hit by this.

Thought I'd take a break from watching end of the world virus movies and work my way though Mission Impossible series (I've only seen Fallout before today).

feck you MI:2

Off topic but the sound track in MI2 was my first exposure to Hans Zimmer but even he couldn't save that film.

Starkie_1 - "me and my friends are rich and clever, unlike all you toilet paper hoarding hermits"

Also Starkie_1 - claims he's doing everything to reduce the risk of infecting kids.

Everyone else - points out that he's not practicing social distancing.

Starkie_1 again - "omg you sheep why are you resorting to personal insults"

Rich and clever. If only. Affluent area suddenly means that everyone living there is shitting gold. It means feck all at the end of the day does it. Money isn’t going to stop you getting it, nor recovering from it.

Yes, because the only thing preventing us being in a better place is the same two senior advisors guiding Jeremy Corbyn or any other Labour leader for the past twenty years.

Any response to the questions I've asked?

No I'm from Ireland and we're already social distancing with less cases than the UK.

I'm looking at what's happening in other countries and I can't see any reason to delay social distancing. This thing can't be contained. All we can do is slow it down.

In a perverse way, this may actually help people get sick leave in the future. Right now (prior to pandemic), if you are ill, in some parts of the world you still feel pressured into going to work. Hopefully attitudes will change and lessons will be learned. Hopefully it will also encourage more working from home, which may be less stressful for people and also ease national transport infrastructure.

Can you show me the evidence that its better? You, Boris and the rest must be from the future.

As per @Sweet Square 's tweet and from what my colleague has told me about his home city - Shanghai, social distancing limited their cases to 350. Three Hundred and fecking Fifty through social distancing. A city of millions with only 350 cases. I imagine by now all have recovered and Shanghai is free of the virus with 20, unfortunate, deaths. But hey, lets just infect millions because some twats say its the best way forward. Lets ignore actual fecking evidence and go forwrad with assumptions.

I'm only jerking your pudding.

You do realise that every country has its own infrastructures, it’s own medical system, it’s own expert advice. You do also realise that, as with all life, sometimes it’s not fair and that others get it much worse. For reasons it takes years and years to understand. My mindset is exactly as it should be, taking it seriously, making sure I minimise all risk to those vulnerable around me and awaiting further instruction into how to live my daily life. I’ll be going into school tomorrow, 2 members of staff down in a team of 5, teaching upto 60 kids at a time their PE and fitness lessons for 6 hours. I’ll also then have to manage my team who look after a large group for their after school clubs, around 100 in a variety of sports. But you tell me I’m the selfish one.

You know that you work with hundreds of children, who in turn have parents/grandparents, possibly at-risk siblings or other family members, yet you've gone out for a carvery in a pub today, because the government haven't explicitly banned it. You've done this, knowing that there are tens of thousands of people across the UK that are infected but asymptomatic at this current time. Might be a bit long to go in the Oxford dictionary, but that sounds pretty much spot on for selfish to me.

No it hasn’t. It’s not calling or asking for that. It will, and in good time it will be expected of everyone. I’ll stick to being an idiot and on the receiving end of the abuse for as long as it takes. It doesn’t make you right.

This is pretty much how I feel, I don’t buy into the idea that we need to wait because some morons will get bored and go out.

Even if they did, lots of people still wouldn’t, and there would be much less people on the street and gathering in total than just leaving people to their own devices.

Probably a simplistic view but it’s just the way I see it.

Some twats being Professor Patrick Vallance, with a history of academic and industrial experience. Remind us what your experience is?

The worst thing about this so far is the sheer amount of fecking imbeciles who think they know better than the UK scientific experts.

They are basing their response on sound science. Here in Sweden we are following quite a similar strategy. Both countries will shut down everything when the model hits that stage. Now if you don't like their science you better be a fecking expert yourself, else shut the feck up, you aren't helping one bit.

Repeating bullshit that they are going for herd immunity and risking lives despite multiple denials of this and confirmation that herd immunity is seen as an inevitable by-product only.

Put simply, there are different strategies at play here, by all countries, all of them are aimed at reducing the death rate. Some countries (Denmark, USA) have made decisions against the advice of their scientists and by all means, slate those to your hearts content if you have sound reason for it. But a layman on redcafe, reddit or fecking Facebook slating the UK's scientific response is idiocy of the highest order. You don't know better, I don't know better.

I'm not going to pretend to be an expert on the subject so I'll concede the point. Still think it's surely at least 8-10 times worse. At least it's probably best to treat it that way.

A carvery? Not quite kid. Call it what you want ‘selfish’ ‘moronic’ ‘idiotic’ ... life HAS to continue. As I’ve said numerous times, when I’m told to stay at home and do so for an amount of time I will. I have no qualms at all about that. That time isn’t now

Some world leaders deserve the Gaddafi fate .

It's not 8-10 worse than a flu-epidemic though.

I'm sure it'll be worse, but not remotely close to those figures, there's no evidence backing that up at all.

Phew. That's good news. I'll let my daughter and the rest of the CF community know.

Yeah, your standard FPP2 and 3 masks are intended to be disposable and one time use. It’s sketchy using them for a prolonged period, removing them and reusing them, or getting them damp. The respirators require filters changing.

That said, the 10 FFP3 masks from Screwfix we have in case we need to self-isolate from
each other at home, is more than he can lay his hands on in his hospital. Ukraine has basically not really been hit yet, so this isn’t after a run.

As I posted yesterday though, Italy is fecked too. They are being given surgical masks and toilet paper as they have ran out of masks and can’t keep the supply up: https://www.redcafe.net/threads/wuhan-coronavirus-covid-19-virus.452816/page-216#post-25405757

Sorry, can you remind me the last time this professor handled a pandemic? The very professor who couldn't see this coming.
