SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

No, it's not about finances at all.

I do think there would be no harm in calling off public events, things like sports and crowds. I don't understand why they haven't been outlawed.

But closing all the schools and isolating towns and hotspots needs to be done at the right time, if we do it now, and people isolate for 3 weeks, they'll head back out into the world *before* the virus has peaked - it's all about metrics, to start the isolation right as the virus begins to peak, to mitigate the number of affected people at the right time.

Make the isolation period longer if needed.

Loneliness for a bit longer isn't going to kill anybody.

The only reason it's not happening now is for economic reasons.

You know where there’s probably no COVID-19? North Korea.

Whatever they’re doing...its working.

People in positions of responsibility must be more likely to get it simply because they habitually meet (and greet) a large number of people (or have been doing so until now) on a daily basis.

What makes you think that? It's not like they will report it. No chance of them not having it considering their close relationship with China.

Does anyone even get in to their country? I don't think so. I thought it wasn't allowed.

True. U.K needs some kind of proper leader to emerge about now.

Someone with influence who turns the pressure up on this ridiculously decadent Downing Street debacle.

We're being guided through a fecking pandemic by the Bullingdon Club - think about that.

No we're not - again, I refer you to Professor Vallance - chief science advisor to the government, and pretty much the architect of the path we're following in the UK, who points out that the most stringent methods of community isolation must only come at the right time, or they won't be effective.

Compliance to isolation inevitably starts to fall away over time. Such measures must begin right before the virus peaks.

This is nothing to do with supporting Boris, or the economy, or being pro or anti Tory, this is literally about critical timing advised by the scientists who are clearly apolitical. Listen to reason, they know better.

Yeah good post.

If you go too early with a full lockdown it's totally unsustainable. It's all about timing and thus far I don't think you can criticise the UK (even though all the cool kids want to).

LoI are you telling me Cesc Fabregas doesn't know better than evil Tory overlord Boris Johnson?

Again, all Governments choose which experts they listen to and present to the public.

There are numerous experts out there, respected Professors, who are furious with this U.K Government's decadent approach to this Healthcare crisis.

Some of these aren't even from U.K - they have no agenda other than a passion for what is the right thing to do for the public.

Isolation works only until some point. Because in order for society to function, some people won't be able to get isolated (doctors, nurses, people who work in the supermarkets, policemen etc). When there are thousands of people infected, or even tens of thousands, the isolation would have some effect, flatten the curve, and delay the spread, giving the doctors a chance to save us, and giving the scientists enough time to make anti-virals and a vaccine before more than hundred million people die. If millions of people get infected (and the peak will be millions of infected at the same time, if the government does not act fast), isolation won't do much.

I think that countries who have taken it seriously like Singapore, China or South Korea are going to look much wiser than UK and US, who are not taking this seriously.

The bloke who worked for Glaxo? He's a professor?

I listened to Boris' speech and his adviser who ever it was, and what they said made sense about you can't go into full lock down too early as people will get bored at the time they should be isolated.

I hope it is true. Israel's minister of science says that a vaccine will be ready within 3 months. This won't happen according to the scientists of the company who is making the vaccine, but apparently it can happen much sooner than the forecasted 18 months. Maybe the urgency of the situation, with dozens of top-notch companies working on it will make a vaccine available faster than it is expected. And maybe the regulations will be softened.

Does the test include needles because I could see him being squeamish, or then again he is infected and we'll start seeing the panicking side of him.

A guy I know was in hospital for a few days in February and got tested for the COVID-19 twice.

He claims it involves a rectal swab, which would probably be something Trump would be massively uncomfortable with.

He probably pissed the doctor off.

My partner's mum just had her mouth swabbed.

EDIT - A few places are doing drive through tests, aren't they? The image of that with rectal swabs is amazing.

this is easily written but in reality not accurate. loneliness does kill people. people can only sustain isolation for so long. it's all about timing, and we are nowhere near the peak of this epidemic.

But if they isolated now wouldn’t that prevent a peak and if they do wait for it to peak, people are still going to get bored which could cause a double peak.

Meanwhile trump was just on twitter blaming obama about Swine Flu. An authoritarian only cares about image and perception. They believe that's where a part of their power comes from. He's already said he "liked the numbers where they were" in response to lack of testing and treating the cruise ship patients.

Good government works, bad government makes things even worse. This is why politics and political education of society is so important. People have to have a stake and understanding of their government.

It's not really Boris' plan though. It's Professor Vallance at the wheel, and I trust him. The virus has not yet started to peak here, if we start shutting down the country now, we could do more harm than good. Any drastic measures need to be at the right time.

Watch from about 34 minutes -

This guy speaks sense. I'm not sure I trust Boris either, but the two scientists speaking on behalf of the government - I buy them absolutely.

I wouldn't trust Boris to park my car.

The experts were talking sense as you would expect but it is Boris actually putting things into practice. On his past record he is more likely to accidentally set fire to a hospital before he acts in all of our best interests.

Do you have the same thoughts about Germany? So far they've done the same thing and Merkel told the country most of them will get it.

I can't imagine the hysteria and glowing praise heaped on France if they had for example 500 cases with 8 deaths and England had 2500 cases with 65 deaths. People love waxing lyrical about France's healthcare spending.

UK is very low still on cases and deaths per million and the country which is advised by experts will make moves when we hit the rates others have done probably, and those others are not shining examples of anything yet. Follow Spain or France's timeline, Spain still added 500-700 cases per day.

You have way too many posts simply lambasting the government.

Who the feck is this?

Dunno but she makes a good point. Get it right and you could cop criticism for overeating.

Insane that Hong Kong is so low, considering they are right next to China and are one of the densest cities in the world. I feel like UK are right on the brink; the next week or two will be defining.

The grauniad have an article up with 4 different expert perspectives on the UK course of action ranging from positive to negative, so maybe we can dispense with the "all" or "most" experts agree with Boris bollocks. It seems there is a range of opinion, a weighing up of pros and cons of the severity of restrictions and a timing issue.

We're in it now so I guess we've just got to hope those in charge have our best interests at heart and have sound judgement.

Oh feck.

Yeah we're doomed.

Just put him out of his misery .

I just wonder if his spray tan-applicators will still be allowed to come into contact with him in the coming weeks. It would be novel to see his real skin tone, though.

Surely you’re clever enough to realise that number depends on so many things. There’s lots of information out there that say we’re anywhere between 5-10k that are actually infected.

Maybe we should not test anyone, then we have zero cases and are the bestest in the world.

I'm just sceptical about someone touting the below credentials and everyone posting random tweets like they are revealing new facts.
