Ruud van Nistelrooy | Leaves United

Fergie made everyone mentality monsters. They all knew how to win hence the reason he could win 3 in a row. And challenge regular
He didn't make everyone he signed mentality monsters. Anderson?

You’ve just mentioned a player that won 4 PL and a champions league.
So? He was lazy and didn't apply himself. Ravell Morrison was another. A lot of his early signings in the 80s didn't pay off either.

He was borught in to improve the goal scoring and we can all agree he has failed.

Why do people think he was brought in to improve the goal scoring or attacking? Yes, he was a striker, but AFAIK he did not become a forwards coach when he retired. He was an assistant, a head coach, etc. Was Carrick a midfielders coach when he worked with Solskjaer?

And what? He still won more than most players could dream of

I wonder which big name he will drop for Wednesday that has consistently played under ETH? Our last deputy Carrick where he was part of the coaching team had dropped Bruno in his first game in charge.

I can't see Ruud dropping Bruno against Leicester since doing so would likely mean a more "defensive" midfield of Casemiro - Ugarte and Eriksen in the 10. I'd like to be proven wrong though, since it'd be good to see how the team as a whole can play without Bruno in the side (or probably more likely, a Bruno that isn't overtrying to repay the faith that EtH had in him).

Could be wrong but I don't think ten Hag seems to be the type to take on board a word anyone else says, hence the same shower this season as last despite different coaches and players. So it's a completely clean slate as far as Ruud is concerned for me, starting Wednesday.

Ideally I'm hoping he can do well enough to get us through to the summer to reassess as I'm struggling to see the right permanent option at the moment. That's only possible of course if he gets results and quickly.

Please, just try something else then 4231. There must be something else to try against Leicester?

No idea what to expect from Ruud, but I'd love it if we bring back the 'Ruuuuuuudddd' chant* after every goal we score whilst he is manager.

If this ends up being a 'til end of season' thing I hope he brings in Roy Keane as assistant.

I usually cringe at these kind of suggestions from fans but I genuinely believe there is absolutely no winning mentality amongst this group of players. Some of them need to be consistently reminded of the standards that should come when playing for Man Utd, and the pernicious effects of a potential Roy Keane bollocking might actually begin change things in the dressing room.

Obviously leave the technical aspects of coaching the team to other staff.

Will it help scoring? Bruno gives a pass to put Dalot through, Dalot misses the empty net from 5 meters. It’s not Bruno’s fault, quite frankly

First time he has done that for a while.

If we had scored those first half goals yesterday ETH would still be in a job.

Basically what we play every game, with Bruno up next to our striker.
Proper 4-4-2 with 2 strikers, 2 wingers who cross on their strong foot. 2 mids who can do a bit of everything, albeit one is more of a ball player. 2 centre backs who can head it, with one who can run fast, and 2 full backs who can both defend and cross.

Basically bring back the mid 90s.

Quite intrigued to see how he does. Think he’s getting a bit of a hard time with plenty of posts saying it can’t be possible for someone with no experience.

He actually won a couple of trophies at PSV before walking out citing a lack of support from the club. Ballsy. I like that. He has at least some calibre.

Not suggesting he’s the answer, but he now has the freedom to express his own coaching ideas on this team.

Does Ruud hold midfield, possession and control in high regard?

From our collective, who would he be most likely to field?

They looked at managers in the summer and they have had plenty of chance to sound them out now since ETH's tenure has looked doomed from the very beginning. I hope they have some sort of plan.

We are only 7 points behind top 4 with 29 games left in the season. I am not ready to write off the season as of yet, and I hope INEOS aren't either. We need it give it a proper shot. Otherwise what would be the point of letting Ten Hag go.

Like I said in the other reply, they've had plenty of time and hopefully have a plan in place. They gave ETH a long rope and themselves plenty of time to not rush into anything.

I looked at it like this when Ragnick was appointed. At that point I thought Utd needed to win around 18 of the remaining games to make top 4 a guarantee.

There's 29 games left, that's 87 points to play for. Utd are on 11 points, 70-75 points usually guarantees top 4 or has done in most seasons.

So the reality is Utd need to pick up 60-64 points to make top 4, regardless of what anyone else does. That's essentially winning 20 out of 29 games. Anything less than 20 wins and you need more draws and less losses. While not impossible It's highly improbable.

If you look at the top 6 sides Utd have to play and how many points you might get in those games.

Arsenal x 2 = 1
Chelsea x 2 = 3
City x 2 = 0
Liverpool x 1 = 1
Villa x 1 = 3
Spurs x 1 = 3

W3, D2, L4

For arguments sake, lets say that's a rather optimistic outlook of 11 points from those 9 games. That leaves you needing around 50 points from the remaining 20 games. That's expecting 14/15/16 wins and a few draws.

Bournemouth x 2 = 4
Newcastle x 2 = 1
Brighton x 1 = 3
Forest x 2 = 3
Everton x 2 = 4
Leicester x 2 = 4
Wolves x 2 = 4
Palace x 1 = 3
Ipswich x 2 = 6
Southampton x 1 = 3
Brentford x 1 = 3
West Ham x 1 = 3
Fulham x 1 = 3

W13, D5, L2

I think that's 44 points from those + the 11 above & that'd be 55 points leaving Utd on 66 points. Overall even with this record W16, D7, L6. It's probably still not enough.

Ah another club legend about to be subjected to invective from online moaners

See you in the Championship then.

Not even a day has passed and they are already on to him. Good luck Ruud. You are definitely going to need it.

This is why just being a good coach isn't enough at United. It is why I don't think guys like Potter or Frank work here. Not because they are not good coaches but because of the amount of scrutiny you are going to be under right from the minute you are hired. You need a lot more than being good coaches.

I think Frank has enough about him to not be too daunted by that stuff. More unsure about Potter, but people deal with stuff like this in different ways. Impossible to say without evidence.

This is only the start and it's going to be relentless. There will be no respite. We have seen that plenty of times before with our managers. The media are already referencing their reports from the time of the FA cup final and how we didn't sack ETH back then. Probably got butthurt.

But you get what I mean. One loss and the vultures will be circling like crazy. Even when we win there have been instances of media having a go. Does Frank have it in him to deal with that kind of scrutiny every single day? I don't think he has, atleast based on what I have seen so far.

I think the issue at PSV was that he didn't really have one. @Eendracht maakt macht or @locomojito would know best (as PSV fans), but I think the former said earlier that Van Nistelrooij talked about dominant, attacking football, but never really instilled it on the pitch, where PSV wasn't very consistent in their approach, but overall still pretty reactionary by the end of his one season in charge.

I like Van Nistelrooij but he's not been a strong head coach so far. He may have learned a lot in the meantime though! We'll be finding out now. :)

That's true. Glad he stepped down. The players opinion was pretty mixed. Some of them complained to the board but other (mostly young attacking) players praised him.

Not too bad as a interim maybe because he's a great guy that might spark some positivity but definitely not a long time solution for United unless he suddenly improves.

Stabs his best friend in the back for a chance at his dream job only to see it gone within the day.

What? Who?
