Ruud van Nistelrooy | Leaves United

He'd have been too much of a distraction and easy story for the media if/when Amorim hits a rough patch.

And if it all does go wong for Amorim then Ruud will be forever linked to it, whereas he can go away now and prove himself at another club and then ride in on his white horse should it be needed in a couple of years or so.

Personally I question if Ruud ever really wanted to stay.

Given he had a veto and somehow all of our signings were linked to him, I would say so.

I agree that the 2 players seem like good signings until now, but that’s besides the point.
How were Ugarte and Yoro linked to him?

Correct call. Ruud has done a great job and hopefully it has raised his profile enough to get another decent job somewhere else. And I don't see why anyone should be angry on Ruud's behalf. He is a professional. He knows when managers get sacked, their staff go with them. Implying that we somehow led Ruud on would be calling him naive.

In regards to why I think it's the right call, Amorim's biggest strength is apparently his communication and bond with his players. If Ruud was there, our young players would likely use him as a middleman for communicating with Amorim and that would just slow down the bonding process between the players and manager. Both Amorim and our players should welcome the uncertainty with open minds and look to go in a different, hopefully postive direction.

Good decision by Amorim and the club. I hope Ruud's stint earns him an offer at a decent club. It would be fun to see him manage a championship or PL club

I like Ruud but thats the right call. Amorim is coming to a toxic, rotten club, he's seen what's happened with all the managers before and he's bringing his entire team with him. He needs total autorithy and control over the dressing room, can't have anyone who's not under his line. Maybe Ruud would've been ok with that maybe not, maybe he has preference over certain players or has bonded with some at the end Amorim can't take chances I would've done the same if I was him.

We've been just as wide open in every match under Ruud as we were under Ten Hag. We're still giving away big chances regularly, Leicester and PAOK both had us beat for xG, Chelsea would have without the penalty, the only team we've been somewhat convincing against was the Leicester reserve team in Ruud's first match and even then we gave away 2 goals and let them have 16 shots.

The only real difference between Ruud and Ten Hag this season is that a few moments of individual brilliance have worked out, in the form of low percentage shots flying in.
This is simply not true. Literally our midfield has two players sitting and has far more tackles per game.

So what's he doing right?
He is said to be very good at his job, which is helping the youth team players that train with the first team integrate into the squad, he is the link between youth team and the main squad. Which is not a type of coach that managers usually bring with them or would want to get rid of when they join a new club. He might get a less prominent role during training that he had the last period under ten Hag and Ruud, but I'd suspect he'll keep his job.

He was a favourite player of mine twenty years ago (christ) but I scorned him when he left.

So happy he was able to return, in any capacity so we could give him the send-off he truly deserves

Sorry to come into this this late but whose decision made Ruud leave, his or Amorim's? I thought this could work well. Ruud has been very close to the players, natural authority and clever assistant with potential. Kind astrange it didnt work out at least temporarily but I guess Amorim wanted to work with his team.

Perhaps Ruud can now get a decent club and show some of his managerial potential and come bakc one day

I highly doubt Amorim would like a club legend who has openly stated his desire to manage the club one day working under him. The potential risks seems quite obvious to me.

Ideal for Ruud really. Remains untainted by association with Erik, a stellar caretaker stint, departs with Godlike status still intact and reputation burnished. Door defo open for a further chapter down the line. Right decision all round.

Indeed. He is the only staff who left with his stock higher than before he joined.

All the best Ruud and thank you for your exemplary service!

Ruud is my favourite player and he also carries himself brilliantly as a manager - so happy he got a great send off.

However, this is the right decision for all parties. Amorim needs his team, Ruud needs a bigger job and most importantly these players need not to have any way to be let off the hook. If Ruud had stayed you know what it’d be “oh Ruud nasty Mr Reuben makes me work so hard - we enjoyed training much better with you” etc etc. I’m fed up with them and they need a hard shock to the system.

100% the right decision, no way he could of stayed when he clearly wanted the job, just causes issues that don’t need to exist.

It's expected isn't it. Was really on hopium that he would stay in any capacity but then again I wont begrudge Amorim if he think Ruud is not needed in his setup.

Love Ruud, gutted to see him go.

But it's the right decision for a load of reasons.

Why do you think he came? He was sold a project. He was actually sold a pup. He's been here a matter of a few months. If this is 'how it is' that coaches bring their own people then it is wrong. Fletch has existed across multiple coaches. They could have found a solution for a club legend. They did for Fletcher and he is not as qualified.
With the news of the treatment of Sir Alex and the staff this lacks so much class to say the least.

Thank you Ruud for bringing back the feeling of winning and joy of being a united fan again. A real gift before your departure. All the best!

Good post. For me, there has to be a better solution for Ruud in the wake of Sir Alex being stripped of his ambassador role. Of course they won't offer that because we are penny pinchers.

He was sold a project and lasted a few months. That's an indictment of the way the club is being run. If he steps away from the assistant role and gets some kind of other role, fine. But my money based on what I've heard him say is on Ruud telling em to eff off and take the pay off to the end of his contract...2026!!

Whatever your position is, at the very least we have thrown away millions on a pay off to Ruud.
Which is it?

Penny-pinching or throwing millions away?

Make your mind up what argument you're going to use

No he is a coach. That was his role as technical.director.

Set himself up nicely to be considered next time the job opens up providing he doesn’t shit the bed between now and then

Brave and absolutely the right call by Amorim to let him go. Ruud is a massively popular figure, and has ton of friends in media who do regular punditry for our matches. First stretch of poor/shaky form and questions would already be asked why wasn't he given the permanent job. No manager needs that kind of a person hanging around in the background who wants to take his job.

It also wouldn't have helped as some of the babies in our squad would be in his ears complaining about Amorim methods and decisions when it wouldn't suit them.

i would hope the club gives him a nice severance package
Ratcliffe: "I've got 50p. Feck you, bastard."

Good decision, if you heared what RVN all said at the press conferences it was absolutely clear that he isn't a assistant. Assistants have to be low profile and he was just the opposite.

What I like most is he came back and loved it at United after it went sour with Fergie. Hope he sees it how it was this time. Amorim needs to have the staff his way, and it would have been a distraction. I would have thought he should be able to get a very good job now, given his profile and good win records at PSV and United.

Perhaps the only manager whose profile elevated in the market coaching us. A pretty neat brief spell that stabilized the collapse somewhat while also providing a platform that may aid Amorim during his bedding-in phase.

Thanks and good luck RvN10.

Spot on.

This bunch of lazy under performers need no distractions and no excuses. They need to buy in to Amorim from the off and like you say to have Ruud hanging around there will always be someone they could run off crying to about the new regime. This way there’s no one, so it’s sink or swim time.

It was great seeing him as part of our coaching staff here. He completely looked the part. Such an erudite man. Hope the experience here helps him kick start a successful managerial career somewhere. Would love to see him back as our manager sometime in the future.

Irony is he probably did too good a job to stay. He would have become a comparison distraction. You just know for every point dropped media would never have shut up about Anorim maybe not even being the best manager at the club.

Loved seeing him around again but certainly the right call to move him on.

You can just imagine the reports of him ‘waiting in the wings’ to take over as interim every time we lose a couple.
