Russian invasion of Ukraine | Fewer tweets, more discussion

ICBM being moved around inside Moscow is a non-story, especially given that there was a parade being planned.

The ICBMs being trained on London and Washington DC are already in the places they need to be should the Russians decide to fire them.

UN Security Council resolution draft text published
The draft text of a UN Security Council resolution has been published.

A vote is expected in the next 30 minutes or so.

The text condemns "the 23 February 2022 declaration by the President of the Russian Federation of a 'special military operation' in Ukraine.

It also: "Decides that the Russian Federation shall immediately cease its use of force against Ukraine and shall refrain from any further unlawful threat or use of force against any UN member state."

The resolution will not pass, as Russia has a veto over the vote.

However, there is interest to see how China votes - whether it votes alongside Russia or abstains.

fecking hell. Russia has to be booted out of the UN council by now?! They can't be taken seriously on anything that involves world security ever.

Is there even a process for booting out a permanent member of the security council as the name sorta implies not?

Does show how outdated / disfunctional it is though

I always wonder, how do journalists stay safe in these situations, we never hear of many casualties.

I mean no one would deliberately shoot a journalist and they probably stay away from strategical locations that are at risk of getting bombed until after an attack.

Victory parade? Forgive me when I say I don't trust anything Putin says at all

@VorZakone not sure what happened to your post, but those do look like sickles alright. I am not sure how expected it is to see them in such an area, usually they hide among forests etc, it is kind of a big asset and rolling two of them on the highway seems a bit risky, to me at least.

I'm generally baffled by the lack of visible support in those russian convoys. They all look vulnerable.

Dude. The ICBMs being pointed at western cities have been sitting in place for years if not decades, the launch sites are known. They don't need to move them around.

Absolute hype from that tweet. I promise it's a non story.

I think we are pretty safe.

Only lunatic here is Dodik but I doubt Putin cares about him, and I really don't see any point of Putin invading Bosnia.

There are 500 NATO soldiers here, 700 regular EUFOR soldiers plus 500 new as of yesterday just in case. That's not too much but it's still different to Ukraine. EU is slow on our situation but they were pretty clear these past few days that despite us not being NATO member, it's quite obvious they've invested here a lot and they are ready to defend us. Our troops are part of NATO for years, one of my best mates is currently in Central Africa with NATO for 6 months, all paid by Americans and NATO.

Of course if Putin tries to go for other countries then we are fecked as anyone and it's basically WWIII.

And regarding Serbia, I'd say we are not in danger from them, Putin isn't getting Vucic's support who is heading for EU so obviously Putin won't care too much about them either, so Vucic won't feel very brave to go against country that is supported by EU either.
That's good to hear and makes sense. Hope so anyway. Was more just saying it as a point of "I can relate, selfish thoughts always come into play even if you want to help".

Do countries have anything that can detect a nuclear missile being fired at them to intercept it on the way?

Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles have a range of 5000km.
I am pretty sure that Russia (at least claims) that they can hit 13K km. US are I think 9k-11k, but that is cause they can use them from subs too.

Makes sense. Thanks for being a voice of reason

Detect yes. Intercept, theoretically, US can intercept one or two, but the general consensus is that they might block a couple from North Korea but not full scale attacks from Russia or China.

I misread your comment. Ignore my post from before.

It’s quite terrifying that this will undoubtedly be the case.

yea, there'll be enough time to know to launch ours, so we can make sure armageddon is real, so no need to worry

If he has lost his marbles then what’s stopping him turning europe into a car park? He fecking hates the West and I could totally see him thinking that the Russians have lost 27 million people so they’d survive with similar numbers of dead again. I mean how can anyone predict anything at this point? Feck.

Of course they have detection capabilities.

Interception capabilities are an unknown AFAIK. Would imagine if that were the case then MAD changes a bit though. Unless the interception can only do a single ICBM or a few versus a few thousand...

The Doom’s Day clock must have ticked a few seconds towards midnight this week.

Even people not playing with a full deck of cards want to live. Mostly.

If he turns Europe into a car park then he's as dead as the rest of us.

It's not gonna get to that point, if it did I fully expect someone in the Kremlin to give him some polonium tea. They're not risking their lives for Putin.

Topol-m has an operational range of over 10,000km. Anyway, it doesn't need to be moved anywhere for deployment. 10k km will easily cover the range of Moscow to Washington.

It is, so is all the shite about this actually turning nuclear.

That being said, I wonder where those Tridents are...

Yeah so surely he’s primed and ready to do so? The more I think about it the more worried I get.

hahaha alright man. Just the sight of them feels me with unease I guess.

This made me do some quick reading where I discovered that Norway almost caused a nuclear holocaust in 1995. Well done @nimic.

Quite surprised N.Korea havent joined in, they would love to do something.

They really wouldn't.

If you notice, everything they do is protectionist, rather than being the aggressor. They might lash out occasionally but the Kim family want to stay in control of what they've got rather than get involved elsewhere.

Apparently they launch them on a south pole trajectory to avoid existing defences. Sneaky.

Russia does move ICBMs around though, to avoid being vulnerable to a first strike. Not through Moscow though, out in their vast country. That's why they designed mobile ICBMs in the first place, the US has all of their land-based ones in fixed silos. There are possibly decoy silos.

Detection is a definite 'yes', satellites and radars. Shootdown is also a 'yes' but are limited and couldn't possibly defeat a full strike.

Can they do this? If I were Ukraine I'd tell CNN reporters to turn your damn camera off.
