There would still be enough nukes to breach any defence. Even 1% of nukes get through it is 40 too many.

This is the part where I wish the UN established parliamentary rules that are the same as in any parliament. If someone (or the entity he/she represents) behaves badly, that person shall be kicked out of the assembly. Right now, Russia should be kicked out of the UN Security Council and perhaps banned from future participation in international debates until at least a certain date.

I would happily nominate John Bercow to be the moderator for debates at the UN if I could. Some ambassadors like the Russian one are in need of getting lectured.

So what sort of bombs/blast radius are we looking at in those videos. According to outrider.org I am right on the edge of impacted/not by the heat if a “tsar bomba” hit DC.

Yes but very unreliable. Maybe 1 or 2 could intercept but there are thousands of nukes on each side, many hidden launch sites and on also on subs. Add in ballistic missiles follow a more linear path (and Russia has a lot) so are harder to detect and it’s almost pointless trying.

Actually, those two are of the kind you move around but around the Tundra usually. It's a mobile launcher. The one you refer to is a fixed silo icbm , but those are different types.

They're rumours though, and they'll always be rumours when something like this happens. Hell, rumours when something like this isn't happening too.

Nobody on the planet I'd wager really wants to escalate to nukes because all 7 and a half billion of us know that's an end to it.

We'll see if Putin wants more than just Ukraine in due time, but he won't risk being blown to oblivion with the rest of us. He's crazy, and quite possibly something has changed health wise that's caused him to go loco and decide this has to happen now but he's not 'let's all die' crazy.

Russia does move ICBMs around though, to avoid being vulnerable to a first strike. Not through Moscow though, out in their vast country. That's why they designed mobile ICBMs in the first place, the US has all of their land-based ones in fixed silos. There are possibly decoy silos.

Detection is a definite 'yes', satellites and radars. Shootdown is also a 'yes' but are limited and couldn't possibly defeat a full strike.

I stand corrected.

Regardless, I'm almost certain this isn't going nuclear. A number of things have to happen in order for that eventuality, and I don't think Putin is insane or stupid enough.

and if they are there’s no point worrying about it. people are always worried about the nuclear apocalypse like they’ll be one of the handful of survivors. relax. in the event of a nuclear world war you’ll most be vaporised instantly and that’ll be the end of your worries. it’s highly unlikely that you’ll survive and have to barter your way out of aggravated sexual assaults from fellow wasteland survivors.

The majority of people actually would survive the first strike. For a few days at least until they die from radiation.

Humanity would survive though, but most of us not, you are right.
