Russian invasion of Ukraine | Fewer tweets, more discussion

I have a cottage in cz that will let some of my colleagues use. They are currently on route in car from Ukraine to safety of czech Republic. Well mother and 2 year son are, and she is expecting again. Husband had to stay behind. She has a friend with her. She can stay there for free. I will get the some groceries. Least I can fdcking do

Good stuff. When this is all over, people like yourself, @Sarni and @Rajma will stay in my memory as examples of how true humanity and sheer selflessness can be found in the midst of chaos and despair.

That ICBM has nuclear warhead capability? What the actual feck.

Renting a bus tomorrow and driving to Poland/Ukrainian border to bring anyone needing a shelter to Lithuania. Planning to rent them a flat if needed.
You guys (assuming you're Lithuanian) really sit in an "interesting" location geographically with all this going on.

I think we should just assume that Putin has decided to launch a nuclear weapon, and do whatever needs to be done to stop that. He cannot be second guessed, he's an absolute psychopath operating with a nothing to lose mentality.

@VorZakone not sure what happened to your post, but those do look like sickles alright. I am not sure how expected it is to see them in such an area, usually they hide among forests etc, it is kind of a big asset and rolling two of them on the highway seems a bit risky, to me at least.

That's fair too. Its an impossible situation. Even me as a Bosnian wishes on one hand Bosnia would do all they can (not much in reality) to help out as they understand the struggle not too long ago, while also at the same time selfishly thinking if we do that then the little protection that we have is gone and we'd be fully fecked. And even still if it does progress to war in Bosnia, I have loads of family still there and I have no idea what would come of them, but I also wouldn't be prepared to fly over there to go get killed. Everyone can talk about what they feel is "right" but also people just want to live their own lives in peace, and unless it comes to them directly where they don't have a choice, won't want to leave their position of comfort. Which is entirely fair.

I never agree with mandatory enlisting and all that .. but at the same time, in a situation like Ukraine right now, I can't blame it and it's a tough one. If any of us were there, would you pick up a gun and try to fight, or would you try to escape first? Id bet the vast majority would try to escape and nobody could blame them.

I think we are pretty safe.

Only lunatic here is Dodik but I doubt Putin cares about him, and I really don't see any point of Putin invading Bosnia.

There are 500 NATO soldiers here, 700 regular EUFOR soldiers plus 500 new as of yesterday just in case. That's not too much but it's still different to Ukraine. EU is slow on our situation but they were pretty clear these past few days that despite us not being NATO member, it's quite obvious they've invested here a lot and they are ready to defend us. Our troops are part of NATO for years, one of my best mates is currently in Central Africa with NATO for 6 months, all paid by Americans and NATO.

Of course if Putin tries to go for other countries then we are fecked as anyone and it's basically WWIII.

And regarding Serbia, I'd say we are not in danger from them, Putin isn't getting Vucic's support who is heading for EU so obviously Putin won't care too much about them either, so Vucic won't feel very brave to go against country that is supported by EU either.

This is heart-breaking. The guy is talking to his mom and brother, mainly his brother.

He told his mum he's been captured and she's asking where, he answers Ukraine. I think she asks why he's there and he said they just told us in the morning to go. She's also asking where he is in Ukraine and he says he doesn't know. Finally, the Ukrainians are urging his relatives to call his commander/the army and ask them to stop the invasion.

Not a perfect translation but the gist is that this is the best 'propaganda' for Ukraine, directly trying to expose Putin's willingness to throw his people to the wolves.
Spot on translation, with one small remark. It is not brother, it is father. Бать means daddy.

Even as posturing, this is unnacceptable (if he announces it). He's basically threatening the whole continent if he is not allowed to raid and plagiarise another country.

Gotta say I was worried for Kyiv when I saw reports this morning, pincer movement coming down both sides of the river, more airdrops and heli attacks on the airfields and fights with SF troops in the city...

All repelled, they are finding Kyiv to be a very tough nut to crack, the anti-tank weaponry is proving very effective.

I always wonder, how do journalists stay safe in these situations, we never hear of many casualties.

Russia could destroy it or take it easily if they wanted to. They haven’t sent in anything like their full force.

UN Security Council resolution draft text published
The draft text of a UN Security Council resolution has been published.

A vote is expected in the next 30 minutes or so.

The text condemns "the 23 February 2022 declaration by the President of the Russian Federation of a 'special military operation' in Ukraine.

It also: "Decides that the Russian Federation shall immediately cease its use of force against Ukraine and shall refrain from any further unlawful threat or use of force against any UN member state."

The resolution will not pass, as Russia has a veto over the vote.

However, there is interest to see how China votes - whether it votes alongside Russia or abstains.

fecking hell. Russia has to be booted out of the UN council by now?! They can't be taken seriously on anything that involves world security ever.

It's a missile that can hit 10-15K km away. What are use can it have?
I am a complete noob on weapons, but can it not be a conventional missile? Why does it have a nuclear warhead?

Surely it won’t come to nukes. I’m officially Ralph Wiggins’s on the back of a school bus.

What is the need for a conventional missile to hit another continent?
See previous post, I am no weapons expert and happy to stay like that. But obviously, your point makes sense.

Russia spent most of January and February doing training exercises on the Ukrainian border.
