The Japanese: a great bunch of lads.

Just heard that Japan rested 8 of their first XV today because they were targeting the Scotland game on Wednesday for a win! If that's true, I'm putting a fiver on them for the cup!

Wonder how many of those 8 will make it back into the team? Bit harsh to drop someone after today.

I would go as far as to say it's one of the biggest upsets across any sport ever.

Incredible result

Basically:

Group 1

Australia
New Zealand
SA
England
Wales
Ireland
France

Group 2

Argentina
Scotland
Italy
Island teams (Fiji, Samoa etc)

Group 3

All other teams.

It's unheard of for anyone from group 3 to even go close to group 1.

That's how I'd break it down, someone will probably call me a cnut for my opinion though because this is Redcafe.
You are a cnut for getting this pretty much exactly right.

The Japanese: most of them aren't Japanese.

To be fair, they're better in that regard than a lot of teams.

Goromaru; Yamada, Sau, Tatekawa, Matsushima; K Ono, Tanaka; Mikami, Horie, Hatakeyama, Thompson, H Ono, Leitch, Broadhurst, Tui.
Hesketh, Tamura, Hiwasa, Inagaki, Yamashita, Kizu, Makabe, Mafi.

That's 18 out of todays 23 who are Japanese born. By comparison, the last 23 the Welsh picked to play Ireland only had 14 Welsh born players:

Halfpenny, Cuthbert, S.Williams, Roberts, North, Biggar, Webb, Jenkins, Owens, Francis, B. Davies, Jones, Lydiate, Tipuric, Faletau.
Amos, Priestland, G.Davies, James, Baldwin, Jarvis, Charteris, King

Nothing against them I thought they were brilliant just thought I would point it out :)

I just saw the report on the TV. Let's say they're a little happy.
Rugby is not so popular over here but it may have just had a massive boost.
I wish it would replace shitty baseball.

Well this result, coupled with the fact the next world cup is on in Japan should raise the profile of the game. Will be interesting to see if they can push on and make a semi final now. If they can repeat todays standards on Wednesday, they'll hammer Scotland.

What an amazing game of Rugby that was. The balls on Japan to go for the try... stunning stuff.

The Japanese: most of them aren't Japanese.
Its a byproduct of the modern world, ease of travel, ease of information sharing etc etc. It means that in many sports we are seeing more people representing countries they werent born in. Still the majority of players playing for Japan are Japanese born.

Add in that Japan will have a team part of the 2016 super16 competition (previously the super 14)

I forgot about that actually. Really exciting for Japan and for the sport because to have a competitive Asian side would really grow the game.

In 1991 we (Samoa) beat Wales at the World Cup, and whole damn nation went crazy, I'd imagine the Japanese team is like that right. Maybe not the nation itself as I assume most people don't give a damn about rugby there, but who knows that might change.

Western Samoa, at the time?

I would've been one but I just about recall people making jokes about it (years later, one would think...).

Yep Western Samoa. It's a game that sent our whole nation into euphoria, whereas I assume Welsh people just went "aah feck" and moved on. Not lying, I know a kid born that year that was named Samoa Wales 1991. Like, that is legally his name. We called him Sam.

That's fantastic.

I'm sure the Welsh did indeed try to move on. I'm pretty sure the rest of the British Isles reminded them of it for a while, given it's somehow permeated my memory banks.

Possibly the biggest upset in World Cup history irrespective of the sport. If South Africa win their next three games, you'd back them to get a bonus point for four tries in each of them thus finishing on 17 points which will still be enough to top the pool you'd think.

Christ, Japan? Big win, what the hell is Matfield doing still playing? I thought it was a mistake or something when I saw him in the lineup.

It's currently Super 15, they just call it Super Rugby though. It will be 18 teams in 2016. South Africa gets an additional team in and 1 each from Japan and Argentina.

I know its drastic, but this is the worst result in SA rugby and I really don't see the need for the coach to continue, and would relieve him of his duties now..SA aren't winning the world cup( No team has ever lost a group stage game and done it, no one has ever lost to Japan and won the world cup), and thats 6 defeats in 9,Jake White was recalled mid-tour in 2006 to explain poor results on the European tour, this is a 1000 times worse.

Everyone with any sound judgement could see that this was a disaster waiting to happen...Jean De Villiers has played 1 game in 10 months, which he was abysmal in , and he's a great guy, but he is a sentimental selection and shouldnt have started.., and so are the other pensioners..Obviously, Meyer will be fired when the team gets back , but after how much more embarrassment? I can see SA losing to Samoa and Scotland

Against Samoa? SA have struggled against the pacific nations even when doing well..Almost knocked out by Tonga in the 2007 World cup.

They should be able to gain enough points to top the pool. For their sake, you'd hope yesterday was the kick up the backside they needed.

For real??? Is the gap between a South Africa and Japan in rugby supposed to be that big?
Japan hadnt won a world cup match since 1995 until yesterday, SA have won two world cups ..its one of the biggest upsets of all time..You would have been laughed at for suggesting this before the match..that it actually happened, and that Japan actually outplayed SA makes it worse..

If being embarrassed by Argentina(who they had never lost to before then) wasnt, then this isnt at all..Its all about pride now, the tournament is over for SA..you cant win a world cup or high pressure games as a coach and a team when you are sure that heads will roll the second you are knocked out..Mentally, they cant come back from yesterday.

They're not going past the last 8. Australia will beat them. Two years ago, I had them down to win the World Cup, but Heyneke Meyer bringing back Matfield and to an extent Du Preez when their peak was 2009 was something that will cost them big time.

Or England, seeing as we cant really be sure who will top the first group..A 38 y.o coming out of retirement where he was a pundit is a travesty..Heads will roll, but it may too late..Samoa and Scotland will be up for this so much, those are the worst teams to face when you are struggling for morale..

I think England will top pool A at Australia's expense and still believe South Africa will find a way to top their pool.

The Haka is such a stupid idea yet such a brilliant idea.

Samoa vs USA
Only been 4 minutes but I don't like what I'm seeing from Samoa so far. Come on boys, cut out the stupid errors.
