Rugby World Cup 2015 | Reminiscing Thread

I'd say the football comparison should include Japan again, but Japan beating a top team like Brazil or Spain, with Germany being the NZ powerhouse.

Japan are likeable and decent team in both sports, one of those teams who aren't exactly "winners' but fun as hell....and well today, had the world supporting them.

No that's way off, this Japan side lost to the USA 2 months ago and the gap in Rugby is far greater between the top sides and the rest. They hadn't won a rugby world cup game for 20 odd years.

What a day! Ireland thump Canada, Georgia shock Tonga with a heroic defensive display, Japan beat South fecking Africa in the best game of rugby I've seen in 10 years and now West Ham beat City.

If Italy beat France later on I may retire from watching sport undefeated.

I'd throw in the cricket, with the posh gits from Surrey losing to Gloucestershire in the one day final.

France notorious slow starters at the world cup too aren't they?

I'd beg to differ. Japan are a good side who could beat any of Spain, Germany or Argentina on any given day. In footballing terms, that game would be akin to North Korea beating Spain 4-2 or 5-3, taking into account the high scoreline.

Also keep in mind it's a high scoring game. So instead of stealing the match 1-0, the Northern Ireland/Andorra/Iceland team is beating Brazil/Germany/Argentina 4-3.
For real??? Is the gap between a South Africa and Japan in rugby supposed to be that big?

Its horrific. SA should never lose to Japan. Its like Andorra beating Germany in football.

This, but they were truly bad in the Rugby Championship, so it's surprising but not so surprising.

The gap is that big. Even Northern Ireland or Iceland could beat Brazil or Germany on a good day!

Japan beating South Africa in a test match ranks up there in the list of greatest sporting upsets, let alone rugby.

Basically:

Group 1

Australia
New Zealand
SA
England
Wales
Ireland
France

Group 2

Argentina
Scotland
Italy
Island teams (Fiji, Samoa etc)

Group 3

All other teams.

It's unheard of for anyone from group 3 to even go close to group 1.

That's how I'd break it down, someone will probably call me a cnut for my opinion though because this is Redcafe.

Some guy in the pub said there were odds of 1000/1 before the match.

I checked the history on the outrights at the 78th minute mark.

SA were randomly 1/1000 from one site on oddschecker, but mostly 1/100-250

Japan 66/1 to 100/1

Odds you'd never get in a Football world cup match, so I guess the France-SA comparison is the most comparable. Only the likes of San Marino and Luxembourg have those odds, so in betting terms, I don't think there is a direct comparison. Because when San Marino beats England, it will be a far bigger shock....both a huge though.

Anybody know what are the chances of Italy beating France? I know Italy have improved massively, but is this France any good?

Cheers. I glimpsed something on a smartphone, you know how it is.

With France, who knows? They'll probably lose to Italy before smashing the All Blacks in the quarterfinals or something.

Someone more knowledgeable will hopefully answer you shortly, but from my limited knowledge, they are one of the poorer French sides.

It's lazy but I think they're a typically unpredictable French team as usual. They smashed us the other week with some nice rugby.

Coming into the match....France are a worse side than South Africa and Italy are better side than Japan who have sprung out a lot of half decent performances before. You also already have 3 upsets on this day.

I say bet France -20, just because everyones expecting another upset now, or at least querying it. They'll probably lot hot shit in the Groups, then fade in the first knockout round, essentially the opposite of what they usually do.

France should win. Would be another shock if Italy won. Plus they know each others games a lot more than SA and Japan.

I wonder if Cristiano Ronaldo could be a good rugby player.

Ironic that rugby fans want the game to be faster and less uses of the video replays whereas football fans want video replays...
